If I see one more ‘is mastodon an echo chamber’ post, I’m gonna lose it! Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s an echo chamber but I like this echo chamber.

“But you’re not being tolerant!” Fuck off, with your racist, sexist, ableist nonsense! I don’t want any form of it

@farah Pretty much everyone I’ve heard call Mastodon an echo chamber has been a turd, so I consider it a compliment.
@adhdeanasl They are so full of themselves, they practically stink
@farah Turds are meant to be flushed!

@farah @adhdeanasl I have a small feed, so I have not seen comments like this…yet.

My feed is an echo chamber of people who care about the environment, are kind to each other and are interested in real connection. I will take that all daylong!

@cpsask Can I follow your echo channel please? Mine is very good too but extending is always good.

@adhdeanasl @farah

it's worth noting that people who are not racist, sexist, nor ableist seem to have a lot of other interests in common, share a similar sense of humor and taste in music & movies.

if that makes my ad-free, algorithm-free, self-curated crowd of internet friends an 'echo chamber,' so be it.

it doesn't escape me that my political toots are 'preaching to the choir,' though. maybe i should lay off that shit. fuck trump, anyway.

@farah A lot of people don't seem to grasp the concepts that they don't have a "right" to be on here and they sure as hell don't have a "right" to have access to people. Everything should be a privilege and should be consensual.
@Darkasvim @farah
I fear that "consent" is something that too many people online do not understand.
@realtegan @farah Yes, it does seem to be a concept a lot of people have a difficult time grasping.
@realtegan @Darkasvim Did they even watch Pokémon? Ash never evolved pikachu because his Pikachu never wanted to evolve. We show these to 10 yr olds, but they conveniently forget
@farah "Your social media thing is an echo chamber. Leave it immediately and return my free speech platform, where you can shut up and listen to me."
@SecondUniverse @farah 😂😂🤌 they do be like that. hate at its most pathetty!
@farah there are some things I am totally happy to have an echo chamber for. I had to actually go around my own block to look at that post, I wonder what I had blocked him for in the first place 🙄 comparing AI bros not being wanted because the community doesn't want AI to *vile racist harassment* is.... 😬 like mayyyybe it's just that you have a lot of really bad takes, bro.
@farah There can be no tolerance of intolerance

@farah Of all bad faith arguments, "You have to tolerate my hate" might just be the most annoying.

I don't have to TOLERATE anything, assholes. I don't tolerate the people you hate, I ACCEPT them.

@sennoma I specially hate their fake politeness regarding “discussions”. It’s not my responsibility to educate someone and convince them to change their minds. Why should I do all the work?
@farah And then they clutch their pearls if I cuss at 'em and it's all "well if you're going to be rude I don't have to take you seriously", like saying fuck is worse than supporting genocide. FOH with that disingenuous bullshit.

@farah I’m also COMPLETELY fed up with all that nonsense about Mastodon being an echo chamber.

In fact, I welcome it. And if that means I’m not tolerant of fascists, well, so be it. I don’t even WANT to be tolerant of them. I want to slap them in the face.

@farah It's because in-fighting has become so normalized that if you're not constantly fighting with an opposition you're viewed as an "echo chamber" when in truth people may have different opinions but choose not to voice them in order to maintain community stability and to not upset people.

You know, the way people used to actually live their lives.

@Mrfunkedude @farah exactly! we don't have to agree or even believe everything posted here. But, reasonable people know when to mind their own damned business.

I'm reminded of the very very wise man who whenever he was asked a question he answered with "that ain't none of my business" or "that ain't none of your business".

except on the very rare occasion when it was.

@farah Don't make me trot out the Paradox of Tolerance again.
@me @farah Taps toot above…This ⬆️, right here.

@farah

I think a hatred echo chamber is bad because of the hatred, not the echoing. that is what corporate media is for.

I think a community echo chamber is good because of the community and the echoing. that is what fediverse is for.

it's pretty funny when outsiders from the first group stick their head in our open door to scream "QUIT HAVING FUN!!!" at people having fun.

@falcennial @farah Everywhere becomes an echo chamber over a long enough timeline as people self-select their way into or out of it, that's just what happens to any space.

I prefer a nicer echo chamber.

@falcennial @farah

I think it’s even worse. “Quit having fun THAT WE CANT MONITIZE AND GATEKEEP”

@shane @falcennial @farah ObFilkRef Elfland by Leslie Fish*.

"And all you tell me,
Is you don’t care.
You can’t put a meter on,
Sunlight or air.
....
And when you’ve won all those,
Games that you’ve played,
You just might see there’s,
No one left to pay.

We’ll have the whole world,
That you threw away,
And we won’t know you at all.
We won’t know you at all."

*Yeah, Leslie's politics and stated positions ranged from problematic to unacceptable. But d*mn she could write... I'm picky about which of her songs I'll listen to, let alone reference. But I'm not giving up the good ones.

#filk

@jjmcgaffey @shane @farah ooh I like this poem, even though I dont know her at all. thank you for this enrichment
@falcennial @farah Nobody really hates echo chambers. They just hate the ones they disagree with.
@bit101 @farah aha, here you have cut to the bedrock of it! honest, true, and smartly put.
@farah My chamber is resounding with pictures of people’s gardens, craft and cats. Long may it echo!

@farah

Indeed… “you’re not being tolerant!” is the cry of privileged supremacists who think the world owes them an audience for their nonsense.

@farah I think fundamentally any social media is an echo chamber as you can only give your attention to a limited number of things. The difference with Mastodon is you get a bit more control over the boundaries.

So rather than Nazis and adverts for vacuum cleaners, we get furries, trans and people knitting hats using the wiring from a decommissioned telephone exchanges*

* Your chamber may be different

@Workshopshed @farah Yup. I set the terms of my engagement here, not some opaque algorithm that's been engineered to farm engagement from me.
@farah it's just a corporate talking point, seems like people are contantly arguing about stuff actually, and the network overall is segmented along cultural and ideological lines, so there is, for example, a right leaning edgelord side of fedi vs. communist/anarchist fedi vs. democratic party aligned fedi

but what everyone across the board agrees upon is that we don't want AI slop and corporate capture, that's the whole reason we're all here
@mook @farah I mean, that's kind of what you get when you create a decentrailzed network. People's experiences are going to vary wildly.
@[email protected] @farah yes, and that's a good thing... usually
@mook @farah True, though it can be problematic when people don't understand this and end up unintentionally gaslighting each other as a result.
@[email protected] @farah

yeah or a lot of people just don't see the toxic shit that happens, against trans women or black people generally, or other toxic interpersonal stuff, it's not apparent unless you're in their bubble and so more people don't take it seriously... but there are also tools in place to curate and protect one's community that aren't present in corporate silos
@farah You know, I just want to post pictures of birds, and hear that it’s raining again in Britain, or the coffee is nice in Ireland, and get all geeky about plants and transport and climate change w/ people. It’s a pleasure to learn about other’s interests, like Asian food, or oversized dogs, or ham radios or ok, I’m even happy to hear a bit about Linux (a BIT!) Mostly, I’m honored to share other struggles and grief and pain and success. That’s what community means.
(& cats, too)

@farah let’s be real and argument about an echo chamber really is fundamentally flawed. Even in the environments these grifters die for with algorithms people will mostly see content that interests them. IE stuff they agree with.

What most Mastodon servers do in regards to moderation is a god send. And I whole heartedly support it!

I’ve said it other places and I’ll say it again here. Mastodon is about communities not profit.

In other words @farah is right dammit !!

@farah aren't all social network an echo chamber, good or bad ? (I might not fully understand the meaning, pardon I'm french ;) )
@farah
<strikethrough>Echo Chamber</strikethrough>
Bastion Of Sanity
@farah
It's *my* echo chamber. Leave me alone. I like it here.
@farah To paraphrase something I saw earlier just because I'm against abusing puppies and follow people who agree with me doesn't mean I have to have an equal number of people who are for abusing puppies in my life.

@farah an echo chamber is only a problem when it seriously disconnects a person from what the outside world is like.

People who live their entire lives on social media naturally think that social media echo chambers are a problem - and they would be, for them.

In the same way that having a friend who agrees with you on most stuff isn't a problem, a social media echo space isn't a problem for healthy people who don't experience the world primarily through social media.

@farah There's all kinds of stuff on Mastodon. Lots of disagreement on politics and AI, two of the issues cited. I don't follow stuff I don't want to see, which pretty much means I don't see it. Occasionally I block when necessary. This isn't "echo chamber", it's quality of life.

I think most of the "echo chamber" posts come from people with flimsy ideas who are upset nobody's interested in what they're peddling.

@farah yes. I don't want my friend group to have a cross section of racists, homophobes, fascists etc simply to ensure I give everyone a chance. I get enough of that kind of false balance from the BBC
