This is a crap article with crap reasons for not having a printer.

Also since you DO need a reliable printer, get a Brother inkjet. Works on Linux, allows 3rd party printer cartridges, seamless WiFi even for phones, just keeps on ticking.

Why There's Simply No Need For Home Printers Anymore - BGR

Home printers were once an indispensable part of a home office. That's no longer true, thanks to the decline in fax usage and an increase in electronic options.

I'd probably recommend a Brother *laser* specifically. The toner cartridges are fairly affordable and last forever. Heck, I'm still using the small toner cartridge that came with the unit when I bought it. But yeah, Brother printers are among the last tech devices that just plain work and don't try to rip you off.

@DaveMWilburn @scottwilson the dipshit that wrote this doesn't live with students or teachers. They can eat shit, lmao.

@da_667 @DaveMWilburn @scottwilson Hell, even living alone as a hermit I still need to interact with sheets of dead tree regularly enough that a (small laser) printer would be worth the shelf space. It's quite annoying to have to send something to someone else to get it printed and then go pick it up, especially if it's anything remotely sensitive. And an actual document scanner, not just a camera and perspective correction. The latter can easily look almost as bad as a shitty fax in my experience. (Though the scanner will likely be a separate 'stick' unit from the printer for space reasons; I live in a shoebox of an apartment...)

(And it would go hand in hand with the electric typewriter I use for filling out forms, because my handwriting is "clinically diagnosed as terrible" as well as making my hands go all weird if I write too much)

@DaveMWilburn @scottwilson ditto and seconded. Lower end, simplest, *wired* Brother laserjet ftmfw

@DaveMWilburn @scottwilson

+1 on laser. had my brother printer 4 years, just put in the 2nd laser cartridge about 4 months ago. stupidly boring. just works.

@DaveMWilburn @scottwilson *smacks roof* I've been using the same Brother laser printer _and_ toner cartridge since 2006. Coupled with a CUPS server, it's accessible from all of my devices and I still use it regularly.

@ethagnawl @DaveMWilburn @scottwilson that's awesome! I've recently replaced a 15 year old Samsung laser hooked up to a RPi with cups.

I probably could've keep the darn thing running for even longer, but it stayed at my parents' after I moved out. I fixed it a few times, but once it started acting up too often, I got them a Brother laser. No issues since then.

Someone took the old printer same day we put it out, hope it'll serve them for a few more years at least.

@DaveMWilburn @scottwilson 🙋‍♂️🙋‍♂️ another shoutout to the wife is a reached and old brother laser printer crew, picked up off marketplace for 20$ with extra 3rd party toner. Just don’t hang out near it when it’s warming up with an air quality sensor.

@DaveMWilburn @scottwilson

I second the motion.
They're flippin awesome 💪

@DaveMWilburn @scottwilson Got my first dual-sided color laser Brother and boy it’s a treat. Seconded, it just works.

@scottwilson

My Canon laser printer has given me zero problems. Linux Mint literally just found it, no messing around with configurations and such.

"systems like E-Verify and Docusign let us complete important forms digitally."

Uh no. I've had important government forms that just needed a signature. Either I could go into the government office to sign it or print the form, sign it, and scan it. Naturally I chose the second option!

@scottwilson

I find so many of these kind of articles assume everybody is a middle to upper middle class office worker in a major city who only interacts with the same sort of people, who only does business with companies that have the latest everything, and has the money to continually update to the latest digital technology. A very hemmed-in perspective.

@kilroy_was_here @scottwilson in Spain we've got a public (and publicly recognised) document signing system.

@Ea5iyl @scottwilson

Good for Spain. Here in the States we're quite decentralized, so I doubt such a thing will ever happen here. The decentralization can be frustrating and inefficient, but at the same time, I fear what a centralized government could (and would) under a "leader" such as the one we have right now, so it does have good spots.

@scottwilson lmao did the ups store write this article
@scottwilson my brother printer did NOT allow third party anything.
@scottwilson or a 25 year old laserjet (imho of course)
@scottwilson Oh and my view on the article? Well we have 3 printers...
@scottwilson
Just bought a new Brother duplex color laser…Mint recognized it with no issues!
@scottwilson they’ll pry my Xerox laser from my cold dead hands.
Best printer 2023: just buy this Brother laser printer everyone has, it’s fine

The best printer to buy is the one that works without you needing to think about it or subscribe to some nonsense ink refill thing. For most people, that’s the Brother HL-L2305W or something like the MFC-L2750DW that adds a scanner.

The Verge
@scottwilson Their Laserjets are great too. They’re easy on the toner, too. Still on my first one and I’ve been using it for several years, but I don’t print a whole lot either

@scottwilson If you don't print often enough, get a Brother laser.

But yeah, outside of some shortcomings and some attempts at DRM, they've practically won by doing mostly nothing and being the least assholish about everything.

@scottwilson And you can configure the WiFi using the keys on the printer itself. Then you restrict internet access on the router and no one knows what you're printing. As it should be.
@scottwilson The #brother #printer cartridges of their colour laser #mfcl3770cdw are astronomically expensive and now, after 6 years, it is telling me I need new drums. Is it worth it?
