Hello! This is my first message on the fediverse! I'm wondering what I should be doing up front, if anyone has any advice!

#introduction #new

@kodamux you can follow hashtags and it's a great way to find interesting people you don't follow
@lydiafacts
Awesome, thank you!

@kodamux @lydiafacts Additionally, using the advanced web version (vs and app) you can put one or more hashtags into a column so you can see the content without them appearing in your home feed.

Getting familiar with hashtags and learning how to set up mute and CW filters is my other piece of advice. You have a lot of power to curate your feed the way you want it to be.

@kodamux
@FediTips has an overwhelming amount of useful data for new people :) welcome!
@kodamux Hi and welcome. Follow some tags for topics that interest you to fill your feed with posts.

@kodamux
As you find people with like interests to follow, look at who they are following.

And hang in there. Sometimes the process of getting a good feed and good exchanges with people, here, takes a little while.

@kodamux

Finding lots of hashtags that appeal to you will lead you in all sorts of interesting directions.

@lionelb @kodamux
Good advice! On Mastodon you can follow hashtags which is a great feature!

@kodamux

Follow hashtags that interest you and then follow the people who post to those tags.

There is no algorithm but what you make.

@kodamux Hello and welcome! Start by following as many people and hash tags as you can. You can unfollow, later. Nobody will be offended. Hash tag some interests in your profile bio and future posts.

@kodamux

Another piece of advice would be to wait a moment for the « show more replies » button to pop up before responding to what looks like a post with no replies.

Often you will find after you replied that someone else has already said the same thing.

@kodamux Yep, you're killing it so far! I suggest writing a post about one of your interests and putting in a bunch of related hashtags at the bottom. Animal pictures, plant pictures, and moss pictures all seem to do well, too. I highly recommend #Mosstodon for a refreshing place to rest your eyes and mind.

@kodamux

Mastodon has a neat timed mute feature to silence someone who's being annoying for a few hours or days.

I used this on a journalist during a close election, and on someone who was getting into a really heated argument in my feed.

Being able to follow hashtags is a good way to start to find people.

@kodamux greetz! just post!
@kodamux Favorite things you like, boost things you think people would like to see, follow anyone who seems interesting, unfollow when you’re wrong.
@kodamux Mostly just hang here and vibe/chill. No need to do anything specific. One account that I think could be helpful is @FediTips but over time just learn a little bit each day/week/month on how it's all set up.
