And I sit here watching my Tomatoe seedlings sprout.

6+ weeks of frost left, and it snowed half a foot on Thursday and was 12c outside yesterday. Our springs don’t exist haha.

@SchmidtGenetics My tomatoes are on the grow bench, it's not warm enough for them outside yet 😁
Hardening time atleast? Or is that accomplished in the greenhouse? I use a cold frame myself, but it seems to get too hot to harden when it gets 30c in May. Or do you mean they are still inside inside?
@SchmidtGenetics They're still inside inside, they'll go in the greenhose for hardening when I think it's warm enough...

I remember your posts from last year. Our last frost date is spot on 5 weeks out, but for whatever reason our growing season seems quite a bit longer.

In either case, I started our tomato seedlings, along with basically everything else, about two weekends ago.

The siren song of a greenhouse around our beds is calling me, but that sounds… expensive.

Well it’s frustrating because you can absolutely plant stuff outside because it’s warm enough, it’s just a lot of effort with hoop houses or other stuff to protect it.

And even if it’s warm enough, it’ll snow a foot on May long crushing everything haha.

I’ve eyed just buying one, but I’m capable of designing and building one myself as well. Just health issues preventing it.

Now I did finally have my one carpal surgery 2 weeks ago! But the next is end of apr. So it won’t be a large garden, but I’ll be able to hopefully plant stuff the end of May like I’m supposed to.

And hopefully get a greenhouse or two built for next season so I can actually hit it hard.

100%, same here. It was 21 °C / 70 °F this weekend, but the low on Tuesday is -4.4 °C / 24 °F.

Thankfully, we don’t really have to worry about snow this time of year and are very unlikely to get more than an inch.

I’m sorry to hear about your health!

Our garden area consists of four 1.2 m x 2.4 m / 4’ x 8’ beds with a 1.2m / 4’ pathway between the beds. I plant for things that climb and have a bed full of raspberries. Hoops don’t seem that practical unless I paid a lot more attention to seed starting time. Even then, a fuke frost would kill my cukes, squash, peas, beans, etc :( A big enough greenhouse to cover the four beds seems like it would be expensive…

Most of the snow is light/small, but there the risk, usually happens every second year, but climate change is exacerbating stuff as we all know.

I’m just glad to be getting it done, long time waiting.

I’ve got similar, I’ve got 2 - 4x12’ beds with 2’ between them, so to make one single greenhouse large enough makes it too large and would need permits and property tax ramifications. My plan would be to make a 4x12 greenhouse which would make those two beds down to 4x8. I would also maybe put another greenhouse down by the fence so it gets the morning light an evening shade. The two garden beds are on the west of the house, so doesn’t get sun till noon.
