📝 Race notes | Wayout Backyard Ultra 2026

I just wrapped up the experience I had last weekend at the backyard ultra 👍🏻🤠

@moelholm Running faster pushed the pain away? 😳 Reads like another great excursion.
@WTL yeah it was really absurd. It was as if my mind had “accepted” being in pain. But then for this one loop moving faster … from after a few minutes of running “tempo” speed … then it felt like I barely had started running. It has made me wonder how much is actually the brain that controls the perceived pain level. I would love to experiment more with this … to see if I can actually use it constructively in my runs. Should probably research a bit 👍🏻🧐😀

@WTL and thanks for reading it 😀😀👏🏻

(I actually talked with a runner at the backyard that told me he had been reading my posts 🫣😆. I sometimes feel this is a one-way thing … but it is nice to know that perhaps some are reading them 🙃)

@moelholm I enjoy reading about these efforts. I either catch your post here or vis RSS.
@moelholm Be a tough thing to research, but it could be interesting.
@moelholm love your blog, great photos as well, love your blogs zoom in/zoom out functions, very nifty (I wanted a close up of your medal)
One question though, after telling us that you convinced your friend Mads to do the backyard ultra, you didn't say how he did?
Anyway, great piece all the same, the pushing through pain thing, I'm certain there are studies on that phenomenon.

@robchapman thank you so much for the kind feedback 😀

Thank you for asking to how Mads did 🤗: Mads completed 6 loops - so at 02:00 AM he said good night 😴. And that was precisely his ambition. In doing this he also made a distance PB - so 40K is now his longest distance 🤩🥳👏🏻. This is very good training for his very first marathon in a month. We both attend Copenhagen marathon there 😀

Yeah I’ll dig up some theory at some point. Quite interesting 🧐

@moelholm
6 loops is great, especially as that's the longest he's run.I was curious, so thank you for sharing his excellent achievement.
All the best to both of you at the Copenhagen Marathon

Sometimes you just need to break out of your routine to get things moving again; picking up the pace is always a good option 🙂
Thanks for posting your race energy strategy, I can definitely learn a thing or two from it.
@oliver absolutely 😀. Happy you can take something away from it 🥳 (at least one approach wrt energy … slightly boring but lays a predictable foundation of carbs 👍🏻)
@moelholm
Great reading thanks 😁👍.
And congrats on the PB 🥳👌
@Johan_Barelds thank you for wanting to read my notes there. It really makes it worth it then (writing down the experience) 🤗👍🏻
Gosh! Great work – and great writing. Very inspiring. In a few weeks, my wife will be on a short concert tour through Italy. That‘s when I‘ll try my first ultra. I still don’t know what distance and what goals I‘ll set for myself, but I have to start somewhere – so why not just go for it? 🤩

@sebastianhahn thank you so much 😊. Wow that’s super nice. Ah with your mind and engine you can pick and choose 😎.

But you can decide if you want it to “last a day” or more (for example a night part as well). If the race starts early then you have 50K and 80K (and possibly even the longer cousin 100K) that can be done while still allowing you to have an afternoon/evening to enjoy afterwards... that’s nice I think 😆

(Above applies mainly until you add heavy vert ⛰️)

@sebastianhahn fyi I thought I fixed the missing notifications from you. But it’s still an issue. I only see these on my main feed if I happen to suspect they are directed at me. Or by going to your profile and click your chat/replies section… then I see it (but still can’t see it’s for me until I click and see it is associated with my thread).

I notice there’s no ATmoelholm in front. Perhaps that’s what’s messing stuff up for my reader 🤷🏻‍♂️

🤣 omg this is so weird 🤪

@moelholm It's possible that my Mastodon client on the iPhone (Openvibe) is responsible for that. I'll try this one from my iPad (IceCubes app). Let's see if this works better…

@sebastianhahn I got this one! Also see the ATmoelholm 🤣.

(I use icecubes too, on iPhone)

@moelholm Ok, I'm switching back to IceCubes on iPhone as well.
@sebastianhahn how lucky that you had icecubes as well to test from too. You can try to switch between them a few times and I’ll star the messages I get notifications from 🤣 (so not peaking at your profile nor scanning in the global feed I have)
@moelholm I actually always liked IceCubes. My only problem with it was/is the picture picker: If I choose four pics in a certain order, I expect them to show up in my toot in that order. Well, Openvibe does that correctly, IceCubes often/always mixes up my chosen order… But: if that is all, I can live with it. Happy to have you back in my feed without any further hassle! 🤩
