Here's a long interview with Hannah Spencer (the new Green Party of England & Wales MP), which among other things confirms the caustic role of the media in this country in trying to smear & discredit progressive politicians;

if you have the time this morning its worth reading, not least of all as it marks a welcome contrast to the sorts of interviews of career politicians that usually grace the media.

‘Wow, people were so angry at Labour!’ Green MP Hannah Spencer on politics, plumbing, smears and snobbery

The 34-year-old plumber last month secured the Green party its first byelection victory and a record fifth concurrent MP. She discusses the problem with career politicians – and being screamed at by voters

Absolutely worth the read, thank you!

@ChrisMayLA6

they «started wondering whom Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green party of England and Wales, would select to stand. “And he said: ‘I’m not choosing anyone. I’m not involved; the local party members decide.’”»

wow, is democracy still such a revolutionary concept in the UK? :)

@ChrisMayLA6 it feels so good to hear that such people exist. And that people are able to see her for who she is, she got the votes after all, despite the hate.

@ChrisMayLA6 Hannah's not wrong about gambling companies parasitically targeting working class communities.

In recent years in my area, the small Ladbrokes closed down and reopened in larger premises a couple of hundred metres away in a former bank.

@ChrisMayLA6 People aren't just angry with Labour, people can't even articulate what they are angry about, but let's sum it up in one word: Neoliberalism.

Ideology of Conservatives: Neoliberalism.

Ideology of Labour: Neoliberalism.

Ideology of ReformUK: Neoliberalism.

Ideology of LibDems: Neoliberalism.

Neoliberalism, which cannot be named, is the reason all #uk political parties are a uni-party.

@ChrisMayLA6 Our political ads in the US are sometimes ridiculous. Wouldn’t it be great if all political ads for any party were assigned a “nutrition label” for logical fallacies? Like “Warning! The following advertisement contains excess amounts of straw man, appeal to fear and ad hominem.”
@coleenwalter @ChrisMayLA6 To some degree, the ad hominem is the result of what we’re really electing. In a representative system where the representatives are in no way bound by their promises or party really, we are electing the guy. In a true democracy, attacking a policy or legislation on the basis of the people pushing it is fallacious, but we don’t really vote for policies or legislation. We leave that to the people we elect. It’s all about trust.
@ChrisMayLA6 I mean, this is kind of tangential, but I think important.
“(It’s an) an absolute scandal that having a bit more money gets you not just a nicer high street – it gets you a longer life expectancy, it gets you cleaner air,” is an important observation. Money doesn’t just give you motivation to maintain the status quo. It allows you to separate yourself from the consequences. Not just having your name excised from the Epstein List, but living on a hill, away from your factory.
