Okay so winter and cold weather cycling I know. Anybody have tips on cycling in a skirt and/or dress?

#BikeTooter

@cargot_robbie friends told me to always have spare hairclips if you wear a quite long dresses and skirts also undershorts are neat too
@cptbichez That's a great idea! Thank you πŸ’– I usually keep one on hand for my hair too
@cargot_robbie I always cycle in a dress - not much longer than knee length has been typically unproblematic for me. I make sure I'm sat on it so the back doesn't flap around the wheel. I do have a rear rack and mudguards and it's never yet caught on anything whilst cycling.
I wear leggings or shorts underneath - the front will get caught in the wind. I think some people do manage to prevent that, but I wear leggings anyway so πŸ€·β€β™€οΈ
@RadtkeJCJ Leggings are going to be a must, at least until I have some experience. Thank goodness for fenders ✨

@cargot_robbie I've always worn bike shorts underneath and scooped all the fabric forward over the seat, same as a long winter coat. Good for modesty & comfort but also prevents chafing. Or leggings if colder.

I've never been successful with the rubber band + coin method of clasping back to front, but trying a knot works with long & thin fabric. Just let a short skirt fly up - that's what bike shorts are for.

On the bike side, skirt guards are a must.

@ellie it's terrible for aero but I love letting my coat flap in the wind behind me. Definitely not skirts though πŸ˜‚ I've got leggings but I guess I'll need some bike shorts by the time full summer arrives. What's the coin/hairband thing? Coin in the fabric and wrap it up with the hair tie?
@cargot_robbie yah. Same technique as a duvet cover. Knobby thing (coin) on one side, both layers of fabric over it, and a band (hairtie) over the whole mess from the other side. Instant bifurcated bottoms. Just use two pieces you don't mind losing too much - if either comes loose they're both lost.

@cargot_robbie I own skorts and dresses that have skorts. Many sportswear make them, and if you just want to wear the dresses / skirts you already own, wear shorts underneath.

I don’t recommend wearing long skirts because that can be dangerous. I only bike in shorter skirts.

@catzilla oof. Short skirts only is wise but hard to hear. I'm not sure how much leg I'm ready to show yet πŸ˜… I'll keep an eye out for skorts. They were popular when I was in school so. Many. Years. Ago πŸ‘€

@cargot_robbie They don’t need to be miniskirts but be mindful of the skirt being stuck on parts of the bike while you’re moving. That’s why I try to avoid any excess fabric especially around the legs. Safety first!

You can try a shorter skirt and leggings? That can be a cool look, a bit retro and stylish. And protects your legs. How about that?

@cargot_robbie So my bike has an enclosed chain guard and a coat/skirt guard over the rear wheel. It's designed for anyone who rocks up to it to just get on and pedal no matter what they're wearing.
@spacehobo That's powerful tech. Mine has it too, I knew it would come in handy ✨
@cargot_robbie pants under short skirts wok pretty good for me
@cutesobri that's probably going to be my starter. I need to feel the fabric flapping in the breeze though ✨
@cargot_robbie for me ist starting to warm up so now im just useing shorts.
@cargot_robbie sit on the back of a rartandem, that way your dress will be blown the right way. Still wear something underneath. Bike shorts/dance shorts β€” learned from experience, *not your skincolor*. Matching your skin is elegant as under layer but people on the road think you’re flashing and drive badly.

If skirt, I often just took it off for the ride. Dress, kirtled up if full; straight dresses are hard to keep unwrinkled. Skirt guards help. High winds don’t.

Slow breezy ride with a skirt guard, really comfortable.

@cargot_robbie

@clew omg the skin-tone jump scare 🀯 I never would have thought of that. I don't want that to be the thing that takes me out
@clew @cargot_robbie there are a non zero number of webpages out there containing the term "why bike shorts should always be black" (unstated: for men) with very convincing photos justifying the wisdom of this rule.
Lime green plus fours for all! @smellsofbikes @cargot_robbie

@cargot_robbie My main requirement is that the cross bar be low enough to stand over it with both feet on the ground and not have it push the skirt way up.

Otherwise no issues, aside from ensuring to tie a knot in any long skirt so it doesn't get caught.

I never bother wearing shorts underneath. It's not generally an issue. Though once a guy driving the other way yelled out "I can see your pussy"! Which puzzled me, as I definitely had underwear on.

@PapyrusBrigade Yeesh, the harassment is real. Screw that guy, I hope he falls in mud.

Tying skirts will take some practice. I'm at least glad my bike is bottom-heavy, I don't need my bike tipping over while I'm stopped at a light in skirts too

@cargot_robbie I just yolo it. I don't give a fuck except for when the back of the skirt gets stuck on the seat that's a safety issue so if your skirt is rather short I'd recommend leggings and just hiking it up around the waist. having thick thighs helps lmao they're not seeing anything but my glorious thigh flesh.

@cargot_robbie While I don't wear skirts myself, I'll note that skirtguards for bikes are relatively inexpensive (and also there are patterns to crochet one's own if one is so inclined).

Since getting a Dutch "omafiets" I have no more worries about ruining loose trouser cuffs in the chain, since the chain is fully enclosed. Though, investing in a whole new bike may be more than any convenience is worth to you.

@dragonfrog Luckily I got a bike with skirt guards, so no new bike needed ✨ A crocheted version would probably look better though
@cargot_robbie skirt guards I was thinking would be easy to fit to most existing bikes, it was the Dutch style full chain enclosure I thought would be harder to add to whatever bike you have - definitely wouldn't fit on any bike with derailleurs, and maybe would have other limits.

@cargot_robbie maybe check out the poupoupidou, a magnetic skirt clip for cycling?

@cargot_robbie Just the obvious: not too long. I once came across a woman whose skirt had gotten jammed into the brake. I had to cut her loose.
@cargot_robbie Just ride your bike side-saddle. /s
