I've been critical of the way the @verge has been covering the development of HBO's upcoming Harry Potter reboot. But it looks like it wasn't in vain.

If you're going to cover it, *this* is how the series should be described every time it's mentioned.

https://www.theverge.com/entertainment/900819/hbo-harry-potter-trailer-release-date

Media coverage aside, looks like this Christmas is gonna suck for trans people who will have to deal — on top of everything — with their entire social circles of cis people gasping and gushing over the new Harry Potter series that's actively funding the policies that are torturing and killing them.

Cis people reading this, if you intend to watch the new HP series when it comes out, here’s two pieces of advice that you're not allowed to ignore:

• Have the decency to keep it and your reactions to yourself. This trans people-killing piece of media doesn't need any of your free publicity.

• Pirate the shit out of it.

@nileane it's possible this is a massive flop, people are still so attached to the previous actors. I thought it was a strange they decided to make this, for so many reasons.

@BenjaminKlein @nileane

Not really. She wants to erase the performances of the 3 film leads because they're not supporting her TERF politics, and actively speaking up against her because of them.

To me though they'll always be the best.

@sar @BenjaminKlein @nileane Does this mean that the new leads are under pressure to publicly support JK Rowling?
@geolaw @sar @BenjaminKlein @nileane Well, they're kids. And like with the previous lot, JKR has been hovering over the set sometimes personally.

@geolaw @BenjaminKlein @nileane

I would LAUGH my ass off if they took exactly the same stances as the OGs in a few years when they're a bit older. That would be hilarious 😂

@nileane @BenjaminKlein @sar

I’ve been really impressed by the way they’ve charted their courses since HP, the choices they’ve made and things they’ve said must stick so in her craw

@sar @BenjaminKlein @nileane > She wants to erase the performances of the 3 film leads because they're not supporting her TERF politics, and actively speaking up against her because of them.

inb4 the new ones also do so in a few years

i find it unlikely that they would given they accept the roles at this point

@lispi314 @BenjaminKlein @nileane @sar

@xarvos @BenjaminKlein @nileane @sar People can improve over years, or worsen.

I wouldn't necessarily assume questionable decisions in the present represent the future of their decision-making.

indeed, and they are children, and i think at their age i didn’t care much about these issues either.

but if jkr wanted to reboot specifically because she wanted to erase the former trio i would assume she vetted for people who align with her somewhat.

this is just some speculation anyways

@lispi314 @BenjaminKlein @nileane @sar

@xarvos @BenjaminKlein @nileane @lispi314

I think it would be at this point. I have no idea what exact ages they are, but when casting I don't think asking a pre-teen "What is a woman" is going to get you a political answer either way. Nor would it have ever been asked while casting.

@nileane you missed point three:
• The rest of us can and will judge you for it, and I for one fully reserve the right to assume you are a danger until proven otherwise.

@zbrown @nileane

From my view one of the dangers is HBO ...

@zbrown @nileane Exactly, even if you pirate the tv series, you still give time to a deeply problemactic content. The all have better things to do.
@nileane I noticed that there's a lot of pirated movies and shows in https://www.hyphanet.org/ It's safer than torrent.
Hyphanet

@nileane

I'll make sure to disable the seeding limit on this one 😇

@baardhaveland @nileane No. if you must pirate nazi media, don't reshare it

@Ember @nileane

The idea of seeding it, was to help sabotage the profits by keeping it available for longer (not that I think my protest matters that much anyway, considering how popular HP already is).

If more people are pirating it, then less people are paying for it.

I don't even plan to view the stuff...

@Ember @nileane

Technically, more people will not be tempted to pirate/view it based on my action. That's not how this works.

But those who already wish to pirate it, have a better chance of succeeding.

If they succeed, they won't have to pay a subscription to view it.

@baardhaveland @nileane most people pirating something will have never planned to buy it in the first place

Better if it's radioactive to both pirate AND buy, if few people seed it makes it slower and higher effort to download or distribute, and the fewer who view that shit the better

Also, piracy acts as free marketing (free because most people pirating would never have bought it) and unintuitively can boost sales (the free marketing + people who pirated and liked it enough to buy)

@Ember @nileane

I understand you'd prefer we wiped the show off of the planet, but that's not an option.

Loud protests works as free publicity (ironically, that's also how I got to hear about it.)

If not enough people are seeding, then torrents tend to die, and the only remaining option to see the show will be to pay for it. (I've ended up there several times myself.)

Thus... silently helping freeloaders for as long as possible, is the only way to sabotage the creators income over time.

Lmao, got blocked for this

“ally” my ass

@nileane

Just saw an announcement earlier today.

Enjoyed HP back in the day.

Before JKR revealed herself to be a TERF.

Hard pass....

Man I’m cis and I don’t even think I’m gonna *watch* it
@dean_r_t that’s good. I think ideally people should not watch it.
Yeah idk if I will :/ I’m not gonna be upset at all at people who do watch it cause Harry Potter itself is a magical world that brings wonder and awe into the minds of millions, but if someone who’s actually aware of the behind the scenes stuff goes “nah imma actually NOT pirate it cause I wanna actively fund the murder JK’s fighting for 😎” then I might just scream and cry in real life
@nileane We could also promote an alternative creative work? For example "The Worst Witch" available as both a book series & tv series. Maybe time for a revival?
@geolaw You mean another revival? Well, I guess it's been ten years since the last one

@nileane

I actually really wanna know so I know who to cut social ties with forever. So chat away about it. Please.

@nileane
I wish I had like a friend who could burn shows and such for me on dvd and send them to me because I am not good with tech. :P

(Also not likely gonna watch that. I used to be HP fan, and loved the books as a kid who literally lived in a cupboard under the stairs for a while...but I am also a trans person so, yeah. Queen Terf really abandoned a big portion of her own fandom with this hate campaign.)

@nileane I second the pirating thing.

@nileane

About point number 2:

https://fmhy.net

Welcome

The largest collection of free stuff on the internet!

@nileane or… don’t. There’s so much more stuff you could watch that isn’t this problematic. I’m usually not the kind of person who berates people for enjoying art made by bad people (any more), but in this case i have zero patience. I get it, i also read those books as a kid and really liked them, but that was when i didn’t have the knowledge, critical thinking and english skills necessary to notice all the problematic shit, all the racism in the books themselves. And as a trans person, it hurts to see cis people still excitedly talking about this franchise as if nothing happened, after such a long time of her hate campaign which has a direct impact on me and people like me.
@nileane i was so confused, i thought you meant High Potential which i was meaning to watch! (https://deadline.com/2024/11/high-potential-ratings-delayed-abc-most-watched-new-series-1236164654/) -- the other HP is dead to me.
‘High Potential’ Drives Impressive 7-Day Audience Growth To Become ABC’s Most-Watched New Series In 6 Years

High Potential is driving big audiences in the seven-day viewing window

@nileane I’m used to pirate things, and I thought to never talk about this upcoming show.

But your message made me think I could share the warez among my relatives, friends, and colleagues. So, they won’t fund JKR and her antitrans crusade through the platform they’ll watching it on, and it will be an opportunity the inform or remind about her shit.

@nileane Yeah, nobody could pay me enough to watch that. Disappointed in the actors taking part knowing now what we do about the author tbh.
@nileane I have zero intention of watching it. I will carefully avoid it while watching more Starfleet Academy
@nileane My best friend is a huge HP fan, but he also wants to do the right thing. I had no trouble turning my back on it when she started her anti-trans bullshit. He’s taking it slower. I’m trying. He already knows what I’m going to say if he says something positive about HP, so he rarely brings it up. But it’s tough to strike the right balance. I’m not giving an inch on JKR is bad and trans people are good. But I can’t yell at him every time we talk. Doing the best I can.
@paco If you're not doing this anyway already, maybe try to reroute his attention to other works from less problematic creators? The Discworld universe for example when it comes to books, or Owl House in terms of TV shows? (Or anything similar that wasn't discontinued, I'm sure there are many other recommendations online.) It's easier to give a thing up when you have another thing to look forward to.
@Sirablopp @paco we are making inroads with the Cosmere (Brandon Sanderson).
@nileane why do we need another one of these bloody things
@ret @nileane because she’s mad that all three main child actors from the movies have since called her out for her transphobia and distanced themselves from her and the franchise. She needs fresh puppets.
@nileane
Thanks to @verge for using their platform to call this out.
@nileane @verge TBH, maybe she wouldn't need those funds, if her lovely friendship with Jeffrey wasn't abruptly interrupted by his sudden death. An horrible event, happened when he died in a US penitentiary. Before he could name his other accomplices in a criminal pedophiles network. Even before some have been elected to governmental roles. The rest is secret history.
@nileane @verge
I don't want to be mean but Harry looks a lot like Ruth Davidson.

@nileane @verge

I will never understand why it is that people with miserable unloved private lives, decide that as THE most miserable, they have the right to take their self-imposed misery out on other people ...

@nileane @verge Fuck J.K.Rowling and her transphobe views. I don’t want to be even near any shit she does. Trans rights are human rights! #transrightsarehumanrights 🏳️‍⚧️

@nileane @verge Honestly, bitch could be slated to not make a dime off this show and I still wouldn't watch it. I left for the transphobia, I stayed gone fir the realisation of her apparent inability to not name a minority character something not obviously fucked up.

bUt sHE haD a tRaNs cHaRaCteR!1!

Named SIRona, for fuck sake!

@nileane @verge I wouldn't use that exact phrasing. It can be read as endorsing her funding for her hate. Too ambiguous.

"...to fund her disproportionate paranoid hate towards a minority..." would be more effective.

@nileane @verge Harry Potter and the “holy fuck why is this still a thing”

@nileane @verge

I haven't given any money to the HP franchise since I learned she was a TERF, and stopped engaging with the fandom about the same time. With the damage she's doing to people, she's worse than her own villains.

@nileane @verge

I don't get it: the books have already been adapted to feature films, why make a tv show (wasting money probably to launder money for someone), I don't really get it...

@nileane @verge a Tesla effect for Harry Potter

@nileane @verge I was just thinking about our local Harry Potter store and like how? How can it still be in business? She's a rancid piece of dog puke and on top, who gives a shit about Harry Potter anyway? God!

JK Rolling-In-It. I don't even know what these shows/books/films are about beyond wizard fantasy. People used to read the latest sequel on the subway. That's one reason newspapers disappeared.

@nileane @verge So an openly fascist author is using the profits from their 3 decade old anti-fascist book series to fund more fascism in the real world? Wow. She probably should have used her money on a good therapist instead.

Also... I probably would not bother pirating this. The original "Philosopher's Stone" movie was only good because Chris Columbus and the cast made it work. Joanne's recent works are rather shitty and only seem to get worse (see: Metacritic reviews of the "Fantastic Beasts" franchise). She's probably rebooting Harry Potter since all of her recent writing projects have been shit. In short, I don't need to ruin my good experiences with the original "Philosopher's Stone" with this shitty remake. I already feel terrible about the original "Philosopher's Stone" because it is a great adventure movie that got ruined several decades later by an increasingly erratic, unstable, and dangerous author. 😬

@arazil @nileane @verge Well it was anti-fascist in the sense that people like Churchill were anti-fascist. The primary goal of the resistance in the #HarryPotter franchise was not to question the roots of fascism and create an egalitarian society based on needs and abilities of everyone, but to restore the previous exclusive liberal order, including slavery. In the end the main character decides to become a cop. Of all the things one could do with magic, he decides that his priority is to make sure the elite of wizards remains unbothered by their nonmagical fellow humans.

Maybe HP was an anti-fascist book. But it was not a good one.

@skaphle @nileane @verge I was mainly using "anti-fascist" to describe the series because much of the series preaches a "Voldemort needs to be defeated because he openly supports eugenics" concept. The statement does not reflect how well the series follows said concept. There is obviously a ton of nuance here that would take more than a single social media post to go over.

Overall, I think Harry Potter worked best during the early "fun adventure mystery" era where the details were handled on a "fast and loose" basis and things were not taken too seriously. The switch to more of a hard core "dark and serious drama" format towards the end of the series ruined it for me.
