They are furious that the Southern Baptist Convention apologized for its support of slavery and segregation. They want to claim that it was forced to issue that apology by wicked forces trying to tear the SBC down.
When you start from these starting points — I'm right; I'm holy; God is on my side; you are not right or holy; you are on the devil's side — there is nowhere to go except on the defensive.
