Though I suppose I shouldn't be surprises that he subsequently deleted his post, apparently after talking to his lawyer.

His reply had said something like "since this dropped late on Friday, I haven't had a chance to talk to my lawyer. However, this silly little thing is no problem and the servers are all safe and secure"

Maybe he asked his lawyers and found out they're neither safe nor secure?

Fedi-wise, the right thing to do is trigger the 90 day instance shut down process to protect the community. Unless someone is ready to take on the biggest Canadian instance right away. (Unlikely)

None of the guidance said to do that, the things that I read said to pick an instance that matches your interests. I was interested in a Canadian-themed instance and I randomly picked one and joined it.

@[email protected] The general recommendation is for new folks to avoid the biggest instances to also avoid Mastodon becoming too centralized. That aside, if you use your instance's local feed, that could influence where you set up your account. I chose a small, science-friendly Canadian instance because it ticks a lot of boxes, but I only follow my own Home feed. I found people through hashtags and reposts, so that feed and instance work well for me. Almost everyone here knew how much I love/caregive/look after my family & almost everyone here felt heartbroken & angry over how my Dad & my family was treated on night Dad died. Almost everyone here knew I was a targeted longtime POC disabled woman activist & been arrested more than 100X. He sent cops to my house - knowing all of that. It wasn't private, it was public. I hate to be "That Guy" but I would remind everyone that these are allegations in the form of a statement of claim, not a finding of fact in a court of law.

As far as I'm aware we do have a presumption of innocence in Canada.

Obviously the allegation is disturbing, but I will withhold my condemnation and won't be moving instances until such time as a finding of fact is made (or at least until we see some evidence to back up the claims).

As for "he's hosting it at home" as some kind of evidence of malice, there was a deliberate and public effort to get mstdn.ca off of "the cloud" and onto Canadian sovereign servers, so I feel like this is slandering someone with their good intentions.

I note, this is not a defence of his alleged actions, merely a reminder of our professed values.

I'm not even familiar with the Neighborhood Leagues concept, let alone their scope, operations, etc.

Having been part of Neighbourhood Associations I can attest to the sometimes ramshackle manner in which they can be organized, so this could simply be a matter of poor accounting.

Given the treasurer is ultimately responsible, it's easy to accuse them. This is why I insist on 3 signature expenditures when I participate in such organizations, it helps to spread the responsibility.
