If you can't see the above post, here's the CBC article about the person who owns and runs the server.

Edit: These are allegations and there's a state of the instance coming up. I'd err on the side of caution and migrate early, or at least back everything up, because losing an account here kind of sucks.

If you're on mstdn.ca, I would save my list of follows/followers immediately and think about moving. The owner is getting sued for over 300K by his community league. I wouldn't bet on the instance surviving this latest thing 😞 https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmonton/inglewood-league-lawsuit-missing-funds-9.7136933

@[email protected] The general recommendation is for new folks to avoid the biggest instances to also avoid Mastodon becoming too centralized. That aside, if you use your instance's local feed, that could influence where you set up your account. I chose a small, science-friendly Canadian instance because it ticks a lot of boxes, but I only follow my own Home feed. I found people through hashtags and reposts, so that feed and instance work well for me. There's some info about moving instances and why you might want to do it on the @[email protected] website: https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server/ I hope this is helpful. (Please give the beautiful Max a kiss on the forehead from me.)
