So yeah. I am kinda looking for a new job that allows me to make our digital world meaningfully better. If you have any leads or thoughts, ping me.

(In an ideal world I'd be way more charismatic and connected to know some rich person to fund me and ideally a few people but that's not the world I exist in.)
Building up an NGO with Luddite/Left leanings to help shape discourse would be cool but those kinds of projects usually don't get much funding ;))
@tante Ugh this is the dream! 😍
@tante most things doing in software nowadays not only don't have any way to fund them, but have enormous resources dedicated to stopping them
@tante this would be amazing and I'd absolutely apply
@tante Ned Ludd is the only General I would follow into battle.
@tante that's pretty exactly what I'm working on. I have limited funds, but more than zero. DM?
@tante I just learned of a different business model called a Public Benefit Corporation on Planet Money’s podcast. They interviewed someone in journalism which often struggles with funding. Public Benefit Corporation puts social good into the core of the business as well as addressing the funding. I don’t know if there is an easy way to find various companies that use that model.
@coleenwalter @tante My understanding of PBCs and (related but different) b corps is that they are proxy indicators of good intent, but not guarantors of good behavior. The constraints built into the corporate charter could be vague, unenforceable, or changeable. The whole thing could be a thinly veiled ruse by bad faith actors intent on using positive public opinion to get away with crime, as in the case of OpenAI.
@twifkak @tante I didn’t consider that : intent (or the stated intent) vs the behavior. The deception is disheartening.

@coleenwalter @twifkak @tante

OpenAI is a for-profit public benefit corporation controlled by a non-profit, so, the “public benefit” part is broadly defined

@tante... That's a big ask in the age of data hoarding. The easy exploitation of natural humans traits is the fuel. I like your con eot. What did you have in mind?
I circled back around to forums and irc, kind of shocked with how many old names are still there. Felt like a home-coming.
@tante I make an app called one sec which helps to spend less time on social media. I can’t offer you a direct job, but we can definitely talk! We do a lot of social media research as well and have received some grants recently, so maybe something is possible in that field! Let me know if you’re interested.
@tante have you tried a meaningfull one at @rcbregman #Bregman

@hopeless I do currently have a job, I just want to do something else
@tante @jessie regularly posts a thread of openings that might be up your alley.
@tante Have you considered becoming an assassin? Plenty of targets these days, even if you want to limit yourself to only improving the digital world.
