The start of #downsizing has begun.

I wish I could go back to my younger self and convince her that the tiny beach shack or small rustic old cabin she always dreamt of was enough.

A big #suburban #home was always too much.

Time for me to stop keeping up with the Joneses and back to #Appalachia where I belong.

#Downsizing is going a bit better than expected in that I am allowing myself to release years of clothing that were never worn or sentimental tshirts. I even found a "lost" pin that was on a jacket waaaay back in the closet. 💕

But, everything came to a full stop when I reached my #hockey sweater (aka #jersey) collection. Almost each are autographed & some I inherited from my brother. 😱

The #downsizing adventure continues... #MarieKondo says keep what sparks joy.

For me, that includes old wooden floors, a few good memories, and a pair of boots made for walking.

Everything else? Thank it kindly and let it go (but that is really tough with a lifetime of memories: concert tshirts, stupid #souvenirs, #inherited treasures that really are not treasures, etc).

I am embarrassed to say that this pantsuit still had tags and was never worn.

A small tag with an interesting location. I was shocked to see "Made in Ukraine". Something I would NOT have glanced at 20 years ago.

This suit carries the quiet marks of the 1990s & 100% polyester, built to last, wrinkle-resistant, and ready for everything. The tag tells its own journey: Made in Ukraine, part of the #global #textile shift of the late 20th century when #clothing production spread across the world. All but gone today.

Sometimes the smallest label is a little time capsule stitched into fabric. Who would have guessed that I clean out my closet to find a garment made in now war torn Ukraine.

A really really tough question about #downsizing....

Downsizing my life and starting with the closet. Hiding in the very dark part of the closet, sitting alone on a shelf and I’m staring at *those* jeans 👖

You know the ones: goal jeans.

Is this still a thing?
I haven’t fit in them in years, but somehow they still hold hope, memories, and a little stubbornness. Actually, probably more wishful thinking than anything else. 😂

Do I keep them for motivation or let them go and accept who I am now?

@AncestryRoads I say donate, because they never work as a goal for me. It's just more proof that I suck at accomplishing things. More weight on the depression that holds me down. Let them go. That doesn't mean you won't lose weight. It just means that you can celebrate that with the joy of buying new jeans.

(I hate shopping. It's not really joy...)

I'm a mess today! :D

@queenofnewyork I really feel like we are twins. I really don't enjoy shopping for clothes either because the expectations vs reality suck. And these jeans have been in the closet for at least 10 years, so, I really suck at accomplishing that goal.

Thanks for replying and sharing a tiny bit about you. We are similar. 🤗

@AncestryRoads There's also so much toxic garbage about weight and "what it says about you" and it's really hard to deprogram yourself from that. Ask me how I know. ;)

@AncestryRoads @Fragglemuppet Depends on if you have a memoir box. I have one of clothes I know I’ll never fit in again. I keep the pieces because they are keys to memories that are precious to me. The pair of jeans I found and wore on an internship in Alaska. The Embedded shirt I wore in subtle protest of a war. The flannel shirt that I swiped and kept when being courted by my first spouse.

If this pair of jeans is a memento moiri of something in your past? Keep them. If not? Donate them.

@semiotic_pirate @Fragglemuppet What a fascinating idea! Although these jeans have no personal significance, I do have a lot of other clothing that I struggled to let go: a few concert tshirts that are seriously faded and shrunk and apparel from my travels.

Thanks for the idea. It's truly fantastic!

@AncestryRoads @semiotic_pirate I have a Muppet Babies tee shirt that I honestly don't remember because I was just a baby, but Mom found it in the attic one day and I put it in a ziplock baggie in my drawer. Although it was probably safer in Mom's hands as I don't know if it's still there.

@AncestryRoads

Donate them, but probably not for the reasons you’re thinking of. Still use that size as your goal but buy yourself a brand new pair once you actually get there. The new ones will fit better anyhow, and be more in style.

@KanaMauna Oh, you are so right and what a twist! I like the idea of maybe a person that adores vintage clothing would love these and I still keep my goal. Brilliant! Thanks so responding. It looks like these jeans are headed towards the donation box.
@AncestryRoads I'm on the sidelines, cheering you on!! You got this!

@Heidiknits I so appreciate this more than you know. This is **hard**!!

#memories are within and not "stuff".
