Today in Labor History July 24, 2009: Steel workers in Tonghua, China rioted when Jianlong Steel Holding Company boss Chen Guojun, tried to take over the majority state-owned Tonghua Iron and Steel Group and reduce its workforce from 30,000 to 5,000. They shut down production and beat Chen to death, while blocking roads and destroying police cars to prevent aid from reaching him. The deal was ultimately scrapped.

After 15 full days in the new house, I think it's time to close off this year-long thread. Some closure on past commentary:
- for the 1st in our lives, we are debt free. Took us nearly 70 years, but we know how incredibly fortunate we are.
- we've dumped our net proceeds from #Downsizing into investments to make sure we aren't tempted to spend it foolishly.
- we kept some funds to fix some issues, including furnace & A/C, water filtration, electrical, eavestroughs, etc.
- my daughter and I are once again fighting galactic aliens online so you can rest easy.
- we've only been to the beach twice, for very short visits, as things have been hectic. Hopefully, we can enjoy that part of our neighborhood as we get into August.

Here is a short video of our 1st walk through just a few minutes before the movers arrived.

Downsizing (2017) shout by ChrisKing

An interesting concept with compelling visuals, but the actual plot ignores obviously more interesting narrative threads to pull. It suffers from heavy-handed preaching and poor execution because of the moralistic posturing about climate change. For all the mouthing of mores common with a certain political persuasion, the film never makes an attempt at scratching the surface of the people shrunk to be the lower-class of maids and custodians for the people who paid to be shrunk out of guilt. The lower class of shrunken people is accepted as natural.

We all know the answer to this question. They aren't fooling anyone. And it's not just about the immediate increase in profits they get from automation and downsizing. It also weakens unions. But there is one upside to all this: those angry asshole customers are now more likely to have only an inanimate machine to vent their rage at instead of people. And if you're quick, you can sneak out the automated gate behind another customer without paying.

Here's a little undead post from this day in 2008.

When it comes time for an organisation to downsize (or, indeed, to be sicced by DOGEs) , any form of selection is bound to be impossibly unfair. So why not a lottery?

Packing up the house and the purging process is going well. My wife is becoming an expert on selling online, and we've cleared out 6 pieces of furniture and all my major workshop tools. We are currently cleaning out every closet and cupboard in preparation for a yard sale this weekend, and my garage looks like a flea market. Everything is priced aggressively to avoid packing it for the move or throwing it out. Next week we'll donate items that don't sell.
