Yes, I am fully aware I misspelled hippos. But I don't want to screw up the poll results so I'm not going to fix it.
@TechBean
There's always that split-second of clarity and spelling knowledge that hits right after you hit send.
@TechBean You say Hippoes, She says Hippos, I say Hypos...
@TechBean The whole Poe family was pretty hip tbh, not just ol’ Edgar Allen..
@TechBean Heck, his sister Lenore was so into the electronic music scene and ravin’ that the family had to step in sau β€œNevermore” to her, and make it stick.

@Caution

I heard they opened an underground nightclub with a giant pendulum hanging above the dance floor.

@TechBean Oh yah, that was a huge financial misstep though.

The wine cellar is inaccessible, and there was some sort of fuck-up with the HVAC/filtering system, so their first big costume-themed event turned into a COVID super-spreader event. Lost a fortune.

Also, not to be a β€œI was there when it was still cool” or anything but tbh, the whole β€œunderground goth bar” thing has been done to death.

Tl;dr : the place was a pit, and it should be avoided like the plague

The Place was a total pit.

@TechBean I'm waiting for my nephew to grow up a bit more. I plan on getting him the Hungry Hippos game. Me & my brothers really loved playing that game together, when we were little kidsπŸ˜€
@TechBean You forgot Trouble

@billd

It was a toss-up between Trouble, Sorry, and Aggravation.

@TechBean I said Trouble, but the game I was _really_ trying to remember was Stay Alive. Those feral kids on the beach dig up a game,β€’ and they decide, wtf, let’s play the game and see what happens. https://youtu.be/cNMmAbbO7cc

@TechBean @billd Sounds like next week’s poll is writing itself: part two GenX games. πŸ™ƒ

@raederle @billd

Based on input from this thread, next week's poll is now scheduled.

@billd @TechBean IMO, Trouble and Sorry are essentially the same game, just with a different form factor.

@dbsalk @billd

You're not wrong. Ditto Parcheesi and Aggravation.

@TechBean We had all of those games. My parents scored lots of free games & toys for us. They never found a free Lite-Bright though. I bought one at age 14 with my babysitting funds.
@TechBean Perfection is the reason I always feel rushed doing anything. Some invisible timer is going to go off, I just know it.
@somcak @TechBean I hated this game because my little brother was better than me. Little fucker.
@somcak @TechBean I hated Perfection. It increased my anxiety!
@PhoenixSerenity @TechBean I think there's a whole group of us Gen X kids anxious because of that game!
@somcak @TechBean How to make me have a panic attack in 2026: Forcing me to play Perfection with some teenagers.

@PhoenixSerenity @somcak @TechBean Wow, I'd completely forgotten about that contraption and never even knew it was named Perfection, but upon looking up a photo, I can vividly feel what it was like to try to stick those pieces in the holes.

On a related note, remember this thing?

@mikemccaffrey

I don't remember this, but it looks equally anxiety inducing!

@PhoenixSerenity @TechBean

@somcak @mikemccaffrey @PhoenixSerenity @TechBean when you were used to it, that was soooo satisfying.

Also, in France it was named "Tricky Bille" (Tricky marble).

@orange_lux @somcak @mikemccaffrey @PhoenixSerenity

Also reminds me of the tilting marble labyrinth. Very stressful.

@TechBean @orange_lux @somcak @mikemccaffrey I remember that labyrinth game! It was also on my hated list because it induced too much extra anxiety. I was already an anxious little kid & didn't need to increase anxiety while trying to have fun!
@TechBean @somcak @mikemccaffrey @PhoenixSerenity I NEVER was able to finish this one. So much stressful than Perfection/tricky bille !
@orange_lux @TechBean @somcak @mikemccaffrey I finished it once. It took me bloody 6 months. I enjoyed burning it in a fire with my brothers, shortly after finally completing the maze. We all cursed it, while it burned to ashes.

@mikemccaffrey
I have never seen or played that game before! I had to look it up πŸ˜†

@somcak @TechBean

@mikemccaffrey @PhoenixSerenity @somcak @TechBean Sure do. The almost-parallel bars was the usual point of failure for me.
@mikemccaffrey I still have this! (Thanks to my partner keeping everything πŸ˜‚)

@TechBean

I had to look up Perfection. I think I was suppressing the memory.

@Perrin42 @TechBean Same. I remembered TV ads for it but couldn't remember the game until I looked it up. I think I played it once and never again, which is saying something, because we had a high tolerance for these games being so obnoxious.

Perfection Board Game Commercial Long Version

YouTube
@TechBean I'm the version of Operation where it zaps you years old.
@vwbusguy @TechBean I 'm the version of Battleship that didn't need batteries years old

@kinsale42 @vwbusguy

I loved playing battleship with my dad as a kid. After losing so many pegs, we had to replace them with matches.

@vwbusguy There’s a version that doesn’t zap you?
(@TechBean )

@TechBean Perfection, with a 60 second timer.

Superfection, with a 120 second timer. Added time makes sense because there are 32 pieces that have to be assembled instead of just putting them in place.

Finishing the series with Head to head perfection, with a 180 second timer, despite it being just as easy as the first game, and plenty of leeway based on how fast the opponent could play.

@TechBean
I meant "sorry" in a sarcastic way.
There should be the option "whatever" because that just might win. : )

@coolcalmcollected

That was one of my most favorite games ever.

@TechBean

it took me about 15 minutes to discover if you put your car in exactly the right spot in the center, the collision alarm would never go off

Coleco Electronic Quarterback Handheld Game Review - The No Swear Gamer

YouTube

@coolcalmcollected
Cool story - my parents worked at a Coleco factory when I was young. We ended up with one of these games but were very much not a sportball family. I borrowed a book from the library so I could learn how to play football so I could play this handheld. No one else ever wanted to play it so it became mineπŸ€ͺ

(@TechBean )

@raederle @TechBean

I never understood how to play that game. I mostly used to make noises like a beat box. I did the same with my speak and spell's. "the cow says mo momo mo momooooooo"

@TechBean Merlin. Waterful Ring Toss. Labyinth (both the big wood one and little plastic one).
@TechBean
There is no "e" in "Hippos"

Mastodon 🐘
@TechBean @TechBean Anyone else spend hours playing (trying to get tiny pegs into holes) Mastermind ?
@Seedymofo @TechBean
Oh, that's a memory! When I was in Girl Scouts, a girl in my troop carried the Mastermind game in her backpack on camping trips, and introduced me to it. We played it obsessively at camp, although I never played it at any other time. It's a clear camp memory for me!
