On a sidenote...
Bought a seven year old Nissan Leaf 40kw just before Xmas

Now Nissan tells me they don't care enough about their existing customers to let the mobile app continue to work for these cars, so we will no longer be able to pre heat the car before driving

So much for trusting a company...
Guess I will never buy a Nissan again

@baardhaveland @obucate @pluralistic To be fair, as an original owner of a 2017 Leaf, this is because the hardware in the car is a 3G cellular modem. Which no longer can connect as the Telcos have turned off the antennas. And are no longer listening…
@cvwarren @baardhaveland @obucate @pluralistic It was totally predictable in 2017 that 3G wasn't going to last long. 1G had been gone for a long time, 2G was in the process of being shut down, and frequencies were already being auctioned for 5G. It was already an issue that those cars didn't ship with 4G, and a bigger issue that they couldn't be upgraded. Having only hard-wired 3G in 2017 is gross short-sightedness on Nissan's side, that wouldn't even outlast the battery warranty.
@jbqueru @baardhaveland @obucate @pluralistic But! They were a year away from a model refresh, and Nissan was, I would say, wisely spending their engineering effort on moving away from an admittedly primitive platform. I’m actually somewhat reassured that my car is unable to snitch anymore

@jbqueru

Some details:
- 4g opened in Norway in 2009.
- The car was made in 2018.
- 3g died in 2021, four years ago (predicted, as you mentioned)
- The app is currently working for another month.

This means either Nissan decided to flip off the car owners so they could kill the existing systems and nuke the 4g network operation cost.

OR the cars are running on what's left of the 2g network. (Which I would claim to be fraud for any 2018 car...)

@baardhaveland Apparently they were still making 3G-only cars as late as last year. Dang.

@cvwarren @baardhaveland @obucate @pluralistic This is why we can't have nice things. Used to be when tech in a car got obsolete, you could get aftermarket replacements, or at the very least, a nice cassette tape adapter to plug your MP3 player into your car.

No excuses for why they couldn't have allowed for wifi connections other than forcing consumers to pay for a subscription.

@baibold

I had a 2019 Hyundai ioniq a few years ago. Awesome car, but not online.

But it DID support wifi so I could get updates for both software and the map.

This also allowed me to use my phone as an access point to get GPS traffic info while driving.

Why isn't this a thing any more? 😢

@baardhaveland because virtually nobody competes on quality, only maximum profit for minimal investment.

@cvwarren @obucate @pluralistic

It's a 2018 model. Also, it's in Norway.

I'm on somewhat thin ice here, but to my knowledge, the 2g and 3g network was taken down quite a while ago. So if the app still works in February of 2026, I'm guessing the car must be on 4g.

@cvwarren @obucate @pluralistic

I asked them, and there was no mention of mobile network shutdown in their answer.

"Denne endringen skyldes den eldre arkitekturen til den nåværende plattformen, som ikke kan oppgraderes for å støtte fremtidige forbedringer eller samsvare med våre pågående utviklingsplaner."

G-trans
--> "This change is due to the legacy architecture of the current platform, which cannot be upgraded to support future enhancements or conform to our ongoing development plans."

@cvwarren @obucate @pluralistic

But as a user of _this_ car, I do not need or expect future enhancements. I simply need the currently working ones to keep working.

I'f it's because the 3g network is going down, I get that. But I'm not convinced that is the case.

@baardhaveland @obucate Indeed—I think I did the math wrong, and that sounds it is the next version of the model (which I agree shouldn’t lose features)
Why the Nissan CVT Is Quite Possibly the Worst Transmission Ever Built - In The Garage with CarParts.com

Nissan has been using CVTs in most of its vehicles since the early 2000s but these transmissions are also known for failing. Read more.

In The Garage with CarParts.com
@Npars01 That's old technology from when it was the only option in the 90s, I think. Did they downgrade to it or have they never upgraded it?

@virtuous_sloth

Nissan kept these awful transmissions in their designs as part of an accelerated obsolescence effort.

People needed new transmissions the minute the warranty expired & they made replacement, not repair, the only option.

"Smart" home appliance makers like LG, Samsung, etc have adopted the same methods. Ditch not fix.

Landfills are reaching capacity earlier than expected from these practices.

@Npars01 Don't get me wrong, I fully understand the concepts and practices. But unlike appliances where all manufacturers do this (except maybe commercial appliance models?), there are plenty of cars which do not have these transmissions. What is the explanation for how Nissan has been able to fool customers into buying these?

@virtuous_sloth

I'm not sure why Nissan has kept these defective transmissions on the market for so long, aside from greed.

Transmissions are the most expensive component to replace, often exceeding the blue book value of the vehicle.

There's heavy pressure at the dealerships to encourage a new car instead of repair.

@Npars01 speaking of enshittification 😂
@Npars01 @baardhaveland @cvwarren @obucate @pluralistic I have a 2019 Kicks with one of those CVTs, it had the shudder on takeoff since I bought it, it's important to note to change your transmission fluid on schedule if not more often.
@Npars01 @baardhaveland @cvwarren @obucate @pluralistic The fan control module rusted out so in summer the fan kept running with the engine off until the battery died. Nissan's fix was to replace the entire rad ($1200) and if they had to disconnect the AC, an extra $250. Plus $170 "diagnostic" charge. I bought the part online for $50 and had my mechanic replace it for $50 so I saved $1520.
But I'm not sure Nissan has the monopoly of this kind of enshittification.

RE
#Nissan #LEAF and canceled customer mobile app...

Wow, I have a 2019 LEAF and in winter time, just get in an turn on the steering wheel heater and the main air heater. I didn't know there was an app for that

In #Osaka it's not very cold, only like 35°F (or 2-10°C) in winter for a _few_ months

The LEAF with e-Pedel on, is a GREAT fullsize #EV

How do you like using the e-Pedel? I use it all the time, except when parking

@six_grandfathers_mountain

I also drive a Kia e-niro, where I can adjust the regen effect in steps. The Nissan e-pedal is like driving with max regen at all time. I prefer that when driving in the city or residential areas. But as you say, sometimes, like when parking, it's nice without.

So far this winter we have experienced -15C. Preheating the car means a lot. But it also heats up rather quick so it's not the end of the world. Just very annoying to lose something that already worked fine.

@baardhaveland
RE

Yea, #Nissan was probably very busy, (not to help you) 🥵 as in having their business becoming not as profitable as Toyota, Honda, Masda, Suzuki and no exta time or staff.

3G will be canceled here this month, I wasn't that aware that 3G was ending around the world, from 2023, 2024, 2025.

@six_grandfathers_mountain

I think the last mobile operator in Norway killed off 3g back in 2021

Apparently that had NO impact on the 40kw Leaf.

Which indicates that Nissan equipped it with a 4g/LTE modem, which will continue to work for quite some time into the future

...they just don't want to...

@six_grandfathers_mountain

And according to your link, they can't even blame 2g, which was apparently killed off last new years eve

@baardhaveland
RE
#Norway killed #3G first and later #2G

Tech dies in funny ways, different times, out of our control 🤪, like #corydoctorow @pluralistic says...that's why this thread started by
@obucate posting the Ian "making things shitty" and we got to #NISSAN etc

Actually that shitty job making the basic webpage into an explosion of graphic crap in the video, that's funny. The top executives so happy in the #enshitifcation

@baardhaveland @obucate @pluralistic I don't know anything about the Leaf and Nissan long-term support. But I can tell you a story about parking meters from a place I worked at briefly.

I worked for a place that made parking meters. They put cellular radios in them to report usage, to download parking fee tables, and even handling real-time credit card transactions.

When they shipped these meters, 2G cell modems were the standard. So thousands of meters were shipped with them. But cell phone standards were changing rapidly - certainly faster than parking meters. When 3G and 4G modems were released, new meters got those. But there are still tens of thousands of meters with 2G in the field.

And then local cell companies started turning off their "obsolete" 2G towers. I'm sure the cell companies saw almost zero traffic through their 2G towers and made a rational decision. Consumers had moved on.

At the parking meter company, we experienced this as a city or two calling support every month complaining that 50 random meters stopped accepting credit card transactions, and the city couldn't update their fee schedule, and that actually, the meters just dropped off the management screen entirely. What do?

After a couple of months, our support reps understood the problem, and tried to explain to the city traffic management person that their meters required a factory upgrade and that we'd be happy to give them a discount on costs. The poor city traffic manager from Scranton, or Spokane, or Sheboygan was *not *happy. Not a lot of cities paid for the upgrades - I figure those customers were done with our company and decided to buy new meters elsewhere.

I'm not saying Nissan Leafs have obsolete networking gear. But I'm saying that your unhappiness with Nissan reminds me a lot of those customers and their unhappiness with IPS Group parking meters.

@grumble209 @obucate @pluralistic

I do understand they need to utilize the old 1g/2g/3g frequencies to make sure the LTE networks kan handle the load.

I also understand that Nissan cannot be blamed for the decisions made by the mobile network companies.

But here in Norway, we've had publicly available 4g running since 2009... That's nine years before my car was produced.

Also, 3g was shut down in 20/21, so that's not the reason either.

To me it sounds more like Nissan just don't care...

@baardhaveland
Take a look at the open vehicle monitoring system (OVMS). I don't know if preheat works on a Nissan or only monitoring. So do your research before getting to excited.

Nissan Leaf/e-NV200 — Open Vehicles documentation

@obucate @pluralistic

This keeps getting boosted, so I figured I'd collect some of the stuff I found out after I posted it:

This is NOT about mobile network shutdown in Norway.
- 4G/LTE started up in 2009
- My car was made in 2018
- 3G shut down in 2021
- 2G shut down last new years eve
- The app worked fine after that

It's either excuses to why they won't bother to run their servers anymore.
Or, they wish to cut the tiny cost related to keeping cars online (Which I would happily pay myself).
