@BongoTwisty @bikenite A4. There's Joy Rd in Occidental, California, that I'd only ridden once on a long rainy ride. I remember being really annoyed at the name because it was a steep climb and there were a couple o false summits. I was not feeling much joy!

Not really a favorite but the name was funny to me.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite you were travelling along Joy Rd in the wrong direction.
@tregeagle @BongoTwisty @bikenite fair point! I do recall a wet descent on a different road afterward that could have easily been a struggle instead.

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4 I think I speak for all Portland cyclists when we say our favorite street is Couch St.

Because it's not pronounced like the furniture with the same name 😏

#bikeNite

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4. I don’t seem to have a photo of the actual intersection, but this Spurline Trail sign points to it: The corner of Roger and Moore, where all the best spy stuff happens in Waterloo Region!

#BikeNite

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4. I used to frequently pass by a sign for a road named Maurice. Every single time, I’d involuntarily hear in my head, 🎶“… some people call me Maurice.”🎶

It’s not much but it’s what I’ve got. #BikeNite

@ClimateJenny @ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite Ha! I would hear The Gangster of Love – or the space cowboy?
@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4. I don’t have a photo but I frequently bike through Bar-b-que Alley on my commuting route and it always makes me laugh. #BikeNite
@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite I haven't been to any of these... but....
@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite #BikeNite A4, there's a Patrick Stewart crossroad of "Patrick St" and "Stewart Rd" that I used to ride through to get to work, that often made a chuckle
@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite #BikeNite A4 extra, there's also a nearby "Nirvana Av" where in the '90s the local council had to replace the oft-stolen steel roadsigns with a large post concreted into the ground
@ascentale #BikeNite A4: for no reason I can discern, the name of Minturn St near me always catches my eye
@saltbaygull @ascentale ha! Used to live on Minterne Rd.

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite

A4. Sleepy Hollow Drive. Somewhere in West Mississippi.

I like the story and setting, it was the incongruousness of it being in the Deep South that stood out to me.

#BikeNite

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite I'm a big fan of Sunnyslope Ave in Sherman Oaks, CA. It is sunny definitely but not much of a slope. #bikenite

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4: I like road names that are variations on "old 99" and such because they show where Route 99 used to be before Interstate 5 happened. Much of the time, it's the same roadbed, but often - particularly north of Seattle - it's not.

There's also a little stub of a road, dead-ending, like half a block long, that used to be called Railroad Ave and it's where a rail stop used to be on the Burke-Gilman Trail back when it was a railroad.

In both cases, it's less that the names are interesting and more that the history is interesting.

Cat's Whiskers in Kenmore isn't bad either, again for history - it's named for one of the dozens of prohibition speakeasies they used to have.

A4.
Around here, most roads are named for a nearby village or lake.
Big Clear Lane goes to Big Clear Lake, and that always makes me smile.
There's also North Road nearby, which gmaps helpfully shortens to "N. Rd".

One of my favourites is a road in Connel, near Oban, that's called Deirdre.

And in Edinburgh a widley-known unofficial name to a crossroads that has 4 churches (one on each side of the junction). It's known as Holy Corner

#BikeNite

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite I used to ride home down a shortcut called locally, Wheelbarrow Lane. My brothers and I referred to it as Skybarrow Lane because at night we had to stare skywards to make out the hedgerow's either side. In the dark it was the only way to avoid veering into them. We of course had no lights and were invariably drunk.
@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite Oh! I can share this one as a nice segue from last week's discussion on the matter … #BikeNite A4
@ascentale
A4: Not a street but a good location too
@BongoTwisty @bikenite
@jfparis @ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite Been to a town in Southern Italy called 'Cozze', which literally translates to 'Mussels'. But pronouncing it as German it becomes 'vomit'.

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite

I cannot find a photo - but on one of my gravel rides you emerge from a field crossing pushing through very high grass to be greeted with the road sign Sheep Tick Lane. And I do check

Edit: it's Sheeptick End

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4. But, if it's somewhere - how can it be nowhere?
@markn @ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite It looks like somewhere in nowhere.
@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4. I once came up this street in Bologna, Italy. It translates to 'street with no name'.
#bikenite

@realSiegfried @ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4 #BikeNite Along those lines, Sin Nombre Trail is one that our trail crew refurbished last fall in Point Mugu State Park, California.

We had a mountain bike race last weekend and that venue has an "Ambulance Hill" trail, which is a wider gravel road that goes up to the higher trails that they use for downhill racing. I think you can figure out why they call it that.

@jfparis @ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite

Which I just read as "chitty chitty lane lane, I love you".

#BikeNite

@jfparis @ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite Love it. Had to add this for enshittification. Enjoy the video!

I can see a video that has nothing to do with cycling. Definitely not working
@ascentale
@jfparis @ascentale Sorry for misunderstanding. We are sharing pictures and stories about street names. One came up with 'chitty lane' and I added a video about enshittification. But alright. I derailed the topic. That's why I did not add the bikenite hashtag.
@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4: I’m fond of The Lane in Oyster Bay, NY. #BikeNite
@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4: also always happy to see the sign for Bread and Cheese Hollow Road. #BikeNite

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4. Not a road, but an entire town in Somerset, England, called Street. A very nice place too that I used to enjoy visiting for all sorts of different reasons.

#bikenite

@etp @ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite Oh. Sounds a bit like the nice place near Mantova, Italy, simply called "Grazie".

@realSiegfried @ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite

A4. Continued … I was also reminded of this street, briefly glimpsed during my excursions in the Po valley in May 2025. Deltas gotta stick together.

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite

A4 Here in York (UK) we have a short cul-de-sac called Cycle Street, along with all the faintly ridiculous road names that go with centuries of history and Roman/Anglo-Saxon/Viking occupation...

Examples include: Whipmawhopmagate, Nether Hornpot Lane (also known as Hornpot Lane Nether!) and Shambles.

Highway 61. Because Dylan.

Personal connection: I grew up in Red Wing, Minnesota, through which highway 61 runs, and now spend a lot of time near old Hwy 61 in Pine County and points farther northeast, including Lake Superior’s North Shore.

I’ve always liked Main Street in small towns (Hwy 61 becomes Main Street in Red Wing).

@MarkBrigham @ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite

I once bought a pair of boots in Redwing, Minnesota. Yes, those. Something of a pilgrimage. They were fine, but then my feet developed bunions and I could no longer wear them with any comfort. But while I could, they were sublime.

@MarkBrigham

"Main street with a backstop."

@ascentale @bikenite

This one is local to me. Another one I've liked since first seeing it. The "Bath" part of the name refers to 19th century floating public baths that were moored on the River Medway near this location. The "Hard" part is a historical term for a section of riverbank that was reinforced to allow people, carts, and boats to access the water without sinking into mud. There's a lot of mud on the banks of the Medway.

Seeing everyone's contributions here has led me to think what a great tour could be made from visiting all these places.

@ascentale @bikenite

#Audax rides around the UK provide plenty rich pickings of linguistic drift. Innocent origins of ancient place names obscured by how they read in these times.

@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4. It is well known that the canals in Venice, Italy, emit unpleasant odors on some days, but here it was less intense than the name suggests.
#bikenite
@ascentale @BongoTwisty @bikenite A4 Big fan of Tom Tits Lane in Somerton. Also in Bristol there's Cheers Drive, which is what you say to the bus driver in Bristol. #bikenite
