@markmetz That's really cool! I hope it takes off.
@chrisp
Absolutely! I hope that it’s not a proprietary process and that it’s open source.
@markmetz Leuk idee maar 7 dagen per product of 30 sec. ik heb vraagtekens.
@Morpurgo @markmetz I'm curious what they mean with commercially viable yeah. Cause well I really would love that to be the case, I'm somewhat doubting that
@thibaultmol @Morpurgo
I would hope that this is Open source and not proprietary, or that it could be engineered in a way that it could be open source.

@markmetz this is so cool !!!

What is Magical Mushroom's behaviour under intense X-ray pulse? Does it turn into a compressive plasma?

@markmetz Within line of sight of me I have tea packaged in bamboo tubes and stored for use in calabash gourds.

We've been "growing packaging" for thousands of years.

So it's not a "what if' but rather "here's the next step".

@markmetz
Can this mushroom-based packing material be deployed at scale?
I, for one, sure hope so.

@Guillotine_Jones @markmetz pretty much anyone can make it, using whatever feedstock biowaste is readily available in your region, and you don't need massive machines or anything, so it certainly supports that kind of grassroots "at scale."

Eben Bayer was pushing this back in 2010, and you'd think by now it would be the default packaging technology, but I guess he patented the shit out of this whole space which is why that hasn't happened yet.

@Helenisenough
Thanks! I hope this is replicated in open source around the world
@markmetz I wonder what % of polistyren micro plastic comes from the packaging relative to construction
@markmetz there is one entreprise making it in France too :
https://www.embelium.fr/
@markmetz no fuckin' kidding! that's an application of #technology that actually excites me

@markmetz

Using both hemp and magic mushrooms.

.... Interesting....

Magical Mushroom Company harnesses the natural flexibility and strength of mycelium, the material structure of fungi, to grow mushroom packaging

@markmetz
Mushroom®️ is a registered trademark? That doesn't seem helpful.
@tip @markmetz the name is branded. How open they are with the production process, which parts are patented – if at all – has nothing to do with it. But it *should* be so no other company files patents and blocks or trolls the advancement with that idea.
@markmetz But, are we sure the mushroom packagings will not evolve into blobs that will grow and eat us in the end ? 😱
@jor @markmetz always, always be aware of the blob...

Maybe it is meant to be

Do not fight it back, Jor

Join the wobbly side of the Force

@jor @markmetz Definitely. If it was the case, there would already be massive money invested to lie about its dangers and implant in every mind the idea that's "here to stay anyway". And people saying everywhere "ok, so I use the flesh-eating mushroom but can we stop with holier-than-thou purity attitude and be realistic for once? I mean everyone's using it, and I need it to package vegan sandwiches so it's obviously a net positive for the community".

@markmetz there was a documentary about this on BBC2 like 15 years ago and it looked like such a great development. I never heard anything of it again. I hope it's finally taking off.

#mushrooms #mycelium

@SilverArrows Those packages are already in our shops. There are several European companies producing them. (You can find some in the comments here).

@markmetz

@markmetz I love this, but I can't share it because there's no alt text.

Magical Mushroom Company harnesses the natural flexibility and strength of mycelium, the material structure of fungi, to grow mushroom packaging

@markmetz amazing but there have to be side effects.
using fungi surely has side effects. Just like using aluminium or other metals or .. plastics

@admin Why should it?
Mycelium packages are checked just as meticulously as everything else for suitability and characteristics regulations before they are ready for the market. They are used for goods as a substitute for polystyrene https://www.permafungi.be/en/nos-clients

@NatureMC @markmetz because EVERYTHING has side effects, so what are the side effects of this?

@admin There's a lot of info in the internet! You can also ask the producers for which case the packages are used.

#Mycelium is one of the foundations of life. It permeates the entire soil of earth. Most food plants cannot survive at all without symbiosis with mycorrhiza (= mycelium firmly connected to their roots). Every good compost has plenty of mycelium.

@markmetz

@markmetz Wonderful!

And undoubtedly, the Fediverse is the only place where I can see something with #solarpunk hash on the top of the trending list. Keep up the great work, fediversers.

(searching for the company may be difficult, though)

@szewek @markmetz

If you take a look through the replies (see @NatureMC in particular) you'll see quite a few responses for you 👍🙂

@markmetz also how old are the people from this video now? It looks like it's a video from the 90s

@markmetz The #goodNews: It's no more 'only' #solarpunk, it's already industry scale (the video seems to be quite old): https://magicalmushroom.com/
Here in France, we also have companies producing #packages from #mycelium, hemp, algues, or plant waste.
Also in other EU countries like Belgium: https://www.permafungi.be/en - which is cofounded by the EU!

The French anti-plastic laws have accelerated these developments.
BTW, the packages don't contain mushrooms but biopolymer from mycelium (Chitin).

@markmetz

Every time I encounter polystyrene/Styrofoam my day is significantly worse

klingt sehr interessant. davon höre ich zum ersten mal! sieht ja eigentlich fast marktreif aus ...

@Mr.Mark "The Sharpie King"
Splendid,
@markmetz we need more of this. Have you any experiences with growing this in situ, for example as insulation for houses? (Is it even suitable as insulation?)
@inj4n @markmetz ”Decomposes in weeks” doesn’t seem to be compatible with that unless it’s prepared in some way.
@inj4n
That I do not know since I am not the one growing it, but I certainly hope so! It seems like it has a lot of potential!
@markmetz
Argh, their shop site needs updating! Says they'll be shipping to EU "later in 2025".

@markmetz

I for one welcome our mycelium-packaging overlords. (Underlords?) 😎

@markmetz my brother has a severe mushroom allergy and is terrified of this taking off. Is it hypoallergenic?

@rpin42 Does he has the allergy when eating mushrooms? For soil is full of fungi mycelium (the kind of roots), many food plants grow thanks to it.

The company above produces these packages with hemp waste, and the mycelium delivers Chitin from it's cells as a "glue". Chitin is a natural biopolymer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chitin

There are no "mushrooms" in these packages.

@markmetz

@NatureMC @markmetz thanks, I’ll tell him. All I know is that he swells up and he has to take antihistamines in the autumn to counteract the spores… perhaps his fears are unfounded and he’ll be fine #hopeSo
