Today, the Commission has preliminarily found TikTok in breach of the DSA, for its addictive design.

This includes features such as infinite scroll, autoplay, push notifications, and its highly personalised recommender system.

TikTok seems to fail to implement reasonable, proportionate and effective measures to mitigate risks stemming from its addictive design.

At this stage, the Commission considers that TikTok needs to change the basic design of its service.

@HennaVirkkunen Nice, what’s gonna happen now?

@hermes @HennaVirkkunen "TikTok now has the possibility to exercise its right to defence. It may examine the documents in the Commission's investigation files and reply in writing to the Commission's preliminary findings. In parallel, the European Board for Digital Services will be consulted.

If the Commission's views are ultimately confirmed, the Commission may issue a non-compliance decision, which can trigger a fine proportionate to the nature, gravity, recurrence and duration of the infringement and reach up to but not more than 6% of the total worldwide annual turnover of the provider."

@HennaVirkkunen Thank you for this important step 🫶
@HennaVirkkunen Indeed, there are lots of things that are wrong with TikTok. Luckily, the Fediverse has an alternative to TikTok called Loops, that is gaining pace, and is welcoming new users.
@Enea90 @HennaVirkkunen loops has an algorithms all algorithms can be addictive even the ethical one. Loops also have infinite scrolling . Sorry but the arguments are bad and if loops get mainstream the EU will go after it
@HennaVirkkunen Thank you! Now please ban lobbying by megacorps! The EU should not be for sale!

Big Tech lobby budgets hit record levels | Corporate Europe Observatory

New figures show that the digital industry as a whole is now spending €151 million a year on lobbying the EU, a major increase to what was already considerable firepower.

@HennaVirkkunen , platforms like this should share who’s buying the data it collects.
@HennaVirkkunen WTF Infinte scrolling is now demonized? WTF is your problem? Where do you even live? The moon? Get your head out your ass.
People like you are the issue in our societies.
Too rich and pampered searching for validation for their existence by doing meaningless, destructive policing no one asked for.
You are the problem.
You want censorship and to spy on everyone, except yourself and your class.
Disgusting.
The level of self-righteous pseudoactivism is unbelievable.
Get your fucking head straight.
@admin @HennaVirkkunen i feel it is a political move, a soft retaliation to the usa threatening greenland
@HennaVirkkunen good news... i hope that will work a bit...
@HennaVirkkunen This is a fabulous breakthrough. No longer the emperor's new clothes ... expect gigantic backlash as precious profits - made on the back of the addictiveness - will reduce. Heaven forbid!
@HennaVirkkunen infinite scrolling probably isn't the biggest issue with that "platform". Just ban it, but please do it for real reasons 😄

@HennaVirkkunen I certainly recognize those things together do make for an addictive experience. That the EU requires effective mitigation via time management controls is interesting.

I suppose these should indeed have some sensible defaults that try to discourage people from staying with the app indefinitely and aren't too trivially dismissed... I wonder what ideas @dansup has regarding features like these for the @loops platform.

@HennaVirkkunen

X, Instagram, and Facebook next.

@HennaVirkkunen most socisl media app hsve those same ux and ui pattern. This is ridiculous. Tiktok should have fines for dangerous trends and challanges on the platform and for censorship instead
@HennaVirkkunen
#Mastodon has the same design features!

@sloanlance @HennaVirkkunen we don't have personalized stream with an algorithm pushing for stuff that we viewed more than a second.

Instagram is pretty close though.

@HennaVirkkunen what about instgram and facebook?

Good step, but more swift and broader action is needed "ASAP"…

@HennaVirkkunen
Infinite scroll? You gotta be fucking kidding me. Like, you're gonna ban Google search next? You're posting on Mastodon, but you're not familiar with the global timeline? Now I really have to wonder if it's a real human there?
@HennaVirkkunen This is a necessary step! Thank you for enforcing european law! 🇪🇺
@HennaVirkkunen I believe your time would be better spent on more productive endeavours. This is not the kind of regulation we should be fighting over and is a massive can of worms.
@Setok @HennaVirkkunen In my humble opinion, fighting psychological manipulation of large parts of society by intransparent platforms with highly questionable incentives is exactly what should be done.
@HennaVirkkunen Lulz, that applies top all the US corposhit, not just the "evil chinese tiktok"… Even Mastodon has that stupid infinite scroll because devs somehow believe that "infinite scroll is good UX as opposed to changing pages"…
