You are being misled about renewable energy technology.

@TechConnectify I can't wait to get home and watch this, I'm sure there will be some good spicy takes I agree with like usual. :-)

@gudenau @TechConnectify get some milk. The level of spice is off the chart.

And I agree with it all.

@TechConnectify Man, quite a video. I suppose going to my library to ask about this stuff is a good idea. Hopefully we can get things fixed soon.

@gudenau @TechConnectify TL:DW?

(I do plan to watch it, but would love to hear what parts stood out most to you.🙏)

@TechConnectify @GoodNewsGreyShoes Make sure to watch the entire thing.

@gudenau Absolutely will do!

I won't be able to until after work today, tho.😅

@TechConnectify Haven't watched the video yet, but have you ever considered uploading your videos to #peertube? I think if anyone has an audience that would carry over pretty well to Peertube it's you. And one of the biggest issues with Peertube at the moment is a lack of high quality content and creators.
@techindepth27 Are there any sustainable, open servers? Most I know shut down due to missing funding or have very strict limits regarding content and/or video length.
@adlerweb @techindepth27 the only “sustainable” peertube instance is (unfortunately?) the one you self host…
@janeq @techindepth27 Yeah. Sadly they need specially encoded files, so hosting it would require double the storage compared to a classic website/RSS. :(

@adlerweb @janeq @techindepth27
Or you could try this:

Upload to Peertube and YouTube will grab it for you.

Or pay for, to bring in communitymedia.video ?
@adlerweb @techindepth27
That seems to be one of the best options we have so far but trying to find new high quality content is still painful. You also can't immediately create an account there as all new accounts get reviewed first although it was pretty quick for me at least
@adlerweb I don't know much about that from a creator POV, but MakerTube and TILVids seem to be decent? Like @janeq said though, the most sustainable instance will always be the selfhosted one.
@techindepth27 @adlerweb @janeq
Makertube seems good indeed. I've not much experience with it so far, but helpful mods, limit of (I think) 2gb per day upload and lives also supported. Accepted my regular video file type.
@elliek @techindepth27 @adlerweb @janeq yeah I crosspost my youtube channel to makertube, it’s great. It also supports automatic mirroring from youtube, so I don’t even have to think about it most of the time, it just happens.

@techindepth27 @TechConnectify

Googling "how to monetize peertube" answered that question pretty well for me. Bro has to eat.

@chrismerkel Fair enough, and that's one of the other biggest issues with Peertube at the moment. But my understanding is, for many YouTube creators anyway, Ad revenue is a pretty small fraction of their income. Obviously I can't say much on that for Alec specifically.

Also the viewership is so low, I doubt it would even make much of a difference at the moment. Obviously that could change in the future but he could always stop uploading to Peertube, or find some other monetization strategy.

@techindepth27 Creating a diverse income stream is absolutely top of mind for most creators. YouTubes algo is stunningly arbitrary and I've seen amazing creators get absolutely rinsed for not adapting content to their opaque whims.

I love the idea of peertube and would love even more to see advertising and payments tech come to the fediverse, becuse the power to decide wether to see ad-supported content, or make micropayments is better than a monolithic platform only designed for revenue generation.

@techindepth27 @TechConnectify @chrismerkel I'm sure youtube ads give some money, but if I remember correctly he has said in the past that most of the money comes from patreon memberships.
@luana @TechConnectify @chrismerkel @techindepth27 plus most peertube users are already using adblockers
@chrismerkel @techindepth27 @TechConnectify ko-fi, etc. (enter favorite funding platforms)? I think cutting hard dependencies (especially economic) is a wise thing to do (if u can).
Technology Connections (mirror)

This channel is synced to mirror https://www.youtube.com/@TechnologyConnections

GravTube
@blueluma I generally shy away from using unofficial mirrors unless it's directly endorsed by the creator.
@TechConnectify Heck yeah Midwestern frugality!

@faoluin @TechConnectify it totally befuddles me that the same masculinity which creates "don't touch the thermostat" also creates coal rollers. The same person is like "off grid" and "suckling at the teat of The Man".

I think the thing Tech Connections does really well is connect those two halves of that brain.

@TechConnectify *looks at the total time* OK, 3× speed it is… :D

@adlerweb @TechConnectify

"Today. A Bass Chipmunk convinced me to use less single-use fuel..."

@adlerweb @TechConnectify 3x speed works for the first 2/3.

@TechConnectify

"Disposable Energy"

wow... with two words, the issue is simplified from seemingly complicated to dead simple. we don't need disposable forks, we don't need disposable packaging, we don't need disposable fashion and we don't need disposable energy.

the term also sheds light on why trying to reconstitute the products of combusting petroleum just feels so odd - it's like digging the plastic fork out of the landfill the next time you need one.

not all the way through the video yet but man, that term alone is transformational.

@TechConnectify oh nice just in time, i was looking for something to listen to over dinner
@TechConnectify post-👏credits 👏applause👏

@TechConnectify

Great story, we need to look forward and embrace the future, not the past...

@TechConnectify Let's gooo, I was just watching your catalytic converter video
@TechConnectify
It must be considered bad behavior to post links without particular description, especially ones pointing to big-tech.

@TechConnectify Oh, my favorite YouTuber who sits in the front of my socks with a great video again! (About 50% through and need to make a break for Formula E in a minute.)

Thanks for all you do, this is great!

@TechConnectify Oh fuck, the second half of this video goes hard. Thank you very much. As an inheritant of German Fascism I appreciate that you are speaking out. Sending love to you and my other friends in the US.

@TechConnectify ah, solar. The amazing technology to save the planet, turned into a grift by business bros.

EDIT: OMG THIS VIDEO IS SO MUCH MORE THAN WHAT I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE!

This is one of the most important youtube videos I have ever seen. I'm sharing this with everyone I can!

Thank you so much for this video! Thank you!

EDIT 2: Lots of people are liking this reply so let me urge you to make donations and or subscribe to Technology Connections on youtube. This is easily one of the best channels on that platform and he deserves every single dollar he gets. Seriously, just pick a video on something you were never interested in and he'll make you interested.

@utf_7 @TechConnectify Then educate yourself and watch.

@mattwilcox @utf_7 @TechConnectify a summary instead of a patronizing comment would've been better. Or even ignoring the comment entirely. You have no idea what that person's schedule is like for a 1.5 hour long video.

Calm down, I've blocked you, learn some respect

@mattwilcox That's an oddly sharp rebuke to level at a stranger who asked someone else for help.

What made their request so objectionable, to you?

@GoodNewsGreyShoes They didn’t though. They said “TL;DW?”.

That’s not asking for help. That’s an incredibly terse way to say “what you made is too long and I didn’t watch it”.

Interpreting that as a “request” involves adding in as much context on your part as interpreting my comment as a rebuke.

In both cases; the “request” and the “rebuke” are not in the original statements.

@mattwilcox
>>"Interpreting that as a “request” involves adding in as much context on your part as interpreting my comment as a rebuke."

1st half: Genuinely, what purpose does a question mark serve if not to indicate a request?🤔

2nd half: You got me there!😅 I absolutely agree that, had I given your words the same benefit-of-the-doubt I'd applied to the "TL;DW?", your statement *could* have been intended as a completely earnest suggestion without even a HINT of disdain or rebuke.🙏

Were they?

@GoodNewsGreyShoes They were. The video is well worth taking the time, and almost anyone (myself included) will come out of it more educated.

[edit] I’ll also add; some lessons are better learned not through a summary but through the actual process of learning. A summary and an education are different. Otherwise school would be a week of cliff notes and done. These are topics I feel deserve learning; because the summary isn’t really that new.

There’s value in spending time.

@mattwilcox I can accept that, & apologize for assuming otherwise.🙏

I genuinely agree with everything you've said, here!💯 You're absolutely right about the merits of this video & thorough study itself, & I certainly hadn't meant to suggest I believed otherwise.

>"A summary & an education are different"

Precisely! A summary (tl:dw) is *not* meant to replace watching the video (it never could!), but to ADD something: your personal take-aways!

TL:DW is an accessibility aid, not a substitute.❤️‍🩹

@utf_7 @TechConnectify

Solar is way too cheap to be ignored.

'Mining' oil for one time use is stupid compared to mining minerals and using them again and again forever.

Fuck ice.

@utf_7 @TechConnectify not too long. Take the time, please.

@utf_7 @TechConnectify

renewables > burning fuel

building capital > operating

<ending type=fake>

community > fascism

@utf_7 @TechConnectify it is in fact 2 videos attached in the middle. The second part, not talking about solar, is considered by many to be the important part.
@TechConnectify Thank you! I could not stop watching until the very end.

@shantara

The only bad thing about a new @TechConnectify video right now is I have to wait until my meetings are over to watch it.... 😢

@TechConnectify this is so good, so well argued, so laser-targeted both rhetorically and culturally at the victims of the fascist disinformation machine that the petrochemical industry has constructed, that about halfway through I stopped feeling like "yeah! right on!" and started feeling more like "Gosh I hope Exxon doesn't try to assassinate him."

This is *amazing* work, stay safe out there.

@glyph @TechConnectify did you know HOMES have ELECTRICITY?!
