It was built while people waited for it to get "bad enough" to matter. Waiting was a decision.

Hitler preached against socialists, communists and jews even before he served his 8 months in prison, where he wrote Mein Kampf.

The process of dehumanizing large groups of people is where it started, it prepared the minds of the people to accept that "they" were a threat, vermin, that needed to be taken care of.

When that idea had taken hold, the time was right to act upon that by means of the concentration camps.

See the parallels with the orange clown? He has spent years dehumanizing people, to the point that his followers started screaming "mass deportations now!" And here is ICE, doing just that.

@fribbledom oh national socialism was a direct outcome of the WW1, the Beer Hall Putsch was almost a decade before the aquarelist was sworn in as the Chancellor.

The point is that creating concentration camps was one of the first things they did once they took over.
They had quite comprehensive proscription lists by then.

It didn't start with the camps, it started with making the minds of the people ready for that.

It began with repeated long, fanatical rants against socialists, communists and jews, to convince a large enough part of the population that they were a threat, vermin, and needed to be taken care of.

Same happened before the slaughter in Rwanda btw... You need to dehumanize a group of people before the population accepts drastic actions against them. See what the orange knuckle dragger has done in the past 10 years: exact same idea.

And then, when they got the power in 1933, the minds of the people were ready for camps. Not for murdering yet, but the first step was to get political opponents out of the way, so every socialist, communist and critic was rounded up and imprioned. Yup, what ICE is doing now.

ICE is for Trump what the SA was for Hitler: a militia to intimidate people, to apply force and violence against opponents: threaten journalists, members of parliament and anyone who dares to criticize the Leader.

ICE may not be going after political opponents and the press, but Trump already has power and can send the DoJ after them, so that it appears to be legal.

And once the critical voices have been silenced, the dictator gets more and more wiggle room. By 1938 Hitler had sent his armies to the Rhineland, which wasn't allowed. But nobody reacted, so he went a step further, intimidated the Austrian government and annexed Austria.

Still no firm reaction from the rest of the world, so he demanded Sudentenland, part of Czechoslovakia. And because the world didn't want war, that request was -grudgingly- granted ("peace for our times").

Greenland today is basically the Sudetenland of 1938: Trump wants it, and wants to take it without a fight. If the rest of the world doesn't draw a clear line now, he'll take it and, as always, the next step will be bolder than the previous.

The point wasn't to convince anyone anyone that the Jews and communists were a threat. They were generally perceived as such even before the war.

The trick was to push all the blame for the lost war on them and promise to solve that problem and then return Germany to the rightful place in the world and make Germany great again.

You find a group that's already resented by the society at large.

Also – I'd not compare the ICE and the rest of DHS to SA. to me that looks like the RSHA already.

That's what dictators want: a population that is so angry or afraid that it wants their leader to fix the problems, no matter what. Dictators need to be above the law.

So yes, of course they target the least popular groups of people to be the scapegoats. The jews haven't been popular throughout history, so they were a logical pick. Not only in nazi Germany btw, the pogroms in Russia were brutal.

Trump has done the same scapegoating for 10 years, but in present-day US Latinos and muslims are the easiest to single out.

And yes, ICE isn't exactly the SA, as I already explained. The situation isn't exactly the same, because Orange is already in the position where he controls the government.

But he is not yet as almighty as Hitler was once he outlawed all other parties. He's working towards that, though.

I predict (again) that there aren't going to be elections anymore, people eagerly awaiting the midterms are in for a nasty surprise.

Action to prevent the US from devolving into a full fledged dictatorial police state needs to be taken now, today.

It started with human beings being "joked" about, disparaged, and othered. For years, decades and even centuries.

At kitchen tables. In pubs. In newspapers.

Affirmations of the inferiority of others, declared to be mere "opinions". Unrestrained opinions, including about their right to live.

It also didn't "continue" with everybody being so "intimidated" they didn't dare to resist. It continued with the regime's invitation to everybody to benefit. The promise that "you'll be unaffected", it's merely "them".

And most accepted that invitation, complied, and benefited, just "doing their job".

So it both started and continued with you.

There are huge protests every day/night in Minnesota, and they're being treated as if they're violent rioters--they're being tear gassed, shot with "less lethal" projectiles in the face at close range (two people have lost an eye), arrested, beaten. And that's just by ICE, before trump has sent in the 2000 military troops he's got mobilized to be ready to go in. Hope it makes you feel better to know that.

@leadore @fribbledom I’m aware of that part and huge respect to the people in Minnesota for standing up to these fascists. The problem is that if the protests are limited to just a few places they’re too easy to suppress. Where is the support from the rest of the country? I’m also not only talking about ICE. If my government started abducting foreign leaders or threatening military action against allied countries the streets would be full the next day.

Look at the news yourself, of course there are protests in other cities. Mostly peaceful, but a few people have been violent and that number will likely grow and things will escalate further.

Oh sure sure yes of course in *your* country, whichever one it is, everyone would immediately rise up and demand a stop to it all, and your dictator's paramilitary force would say "oh sorry" and immediately stop, and your dictator would step down. Dream on.

BTW a third of the people in this country LIKE what he's doing and are thrilled to see people rounded up and beaten. After all it wouldn't happen to them, just the bad people they don't like who deserve it, so it's fine. And I suspect that about the same percentage of people in your country would like someone like trump in charge there as well.

@fribbledom The camps, however, happened very quickly once Hitler had absolute power. Dachau opened within six weeks of the start of the Reich, and operated continuously until the end of the war. People don't often realize how quickly it gets really bad once it gets bad.
