@pixelcode Das ist jetzt Ansichtssache.

@Tutanota Once again it's not about being European. It's about enabling freedoms. If one day Europe enshittifies software there as well, people are going to move.
@kaito02 @Tutanota for the most part yes. But it's also about tech in countries that have laws that are actually enforced, and for the most part don't celebrate oligarchy.
@Tutanota Nothing Company. I am currently writing this post from my Nothing Phone 2 (a).

@danish_akhtar7 @Tutanota except they they are pretty much not European. It is a Chinese company with American investors that designs the electronics and housing in china, builds the devices in china, program the firmware in China, and program the software in China. All of the technical job openings in China.

The CEO worked in the Chinese phone industry for 15 years and started a Chinese company.

They have a marketing HQ in the UK to dodge EU taxes and claim that they are a "European company"

@justenoughducks @Tutanota I am from India, and I bought my Nothing Phone, which was also manufactured in India. They have plants in India as well as in China. By the way, Carl Pei is proud that their product is "Designed in London." 🙂

@danish_akhtar7 @Tutanota it is interesting that he said that while there have been near zero technical jobs in London until the last year or so with a bit of software and product design (still 0 electronics)

But I guess he has a history of misleading at OnePlus like when he said "they are a small startup" without resources of the big names, while being a literal subsidy of the largest phone electronics producer in the world, with all of their resources and contacts.

@danish_akhtar7 @Tutanota anything that deprives the status quo of status is an improvement, as we work towards a world free of capitalists. Though i would question the motives since most products are ultimately just another grift.
@Tutanota or people can go to https://european-alternatives.eu/ to avoid single brand view
European Alternatives

We help you find European alternatives for digital service and products, like cloud services and SaaS products.

European Alternatives
@Tutanota Thanks for the extensive and in depth overview, this really helps 🤦‍♂️ For anyone who wants an unbiased list of alternatives, try https://www.goeuropean.org/ or https://european-alternatives.eu/
@BartV @Tutanota GoEuropean was great when the project started, lots of passionate people with ideas. Sadly, it's no longer in development. I agree with you though, Tuta should refrain from making biased lists. I can understand their motives, but I think it's harmful to their brand. Instead, Tuta should focus and promote its own products and USP's.

@Tutanota As long as it is open-source and the business model does not contradict, it does not really matter where the team is located that develops the code:

Therefore, GrapheneOS is a (I might say, the only) viable alternative mobile operating system. /e/OS' security standards seem to be lacking in some regards while SailfishOS, to my knowledge, is not open source.

My pain point still is the dependency on Google Pixel phones due to hardware requirements. I had hopes for @fairphone working towards this, but it seems it has currently (if at all) no priorioty.

@Tutanota I do like Surfshark for VPN. I didn't even know it was from Netherlands until I recently looked it up. I was about to switch, but I guess I'm good on that one.
@Tutanota vivaldi, proton, mullvad, filen Among other things, I've never tried anything from Tuta :( maybe in the future...
@Tutanota As far as I know Qwant and Ecosia rely on US big tech companies for their results so it's useless. On the other hand, @Mojeek is European and truly independent
@Tutanota yeah, I get it, the main goal of these posts is marketing, but only one option for calendar and email, and from the very first party that produces them, well, thats just weird and off putting imo.

@Tutanota your competitor Proton is also a good alternative. Punkt is the best alternative to iOS and degoogled android. Incidentally Punkt also supports Proton by default.

What the EU needs is an equivalent to Apple Health / Google Fit, which integrates with Oura, Polar, Suunto, Withings, Yazio, Awareapp etc. etc.

Can they all cooperate to form this cloud data storage, protected by EU privacy, supported by subscription?

@ymarmash @Tutanota punkt is the worst recomendation ever the os is subscription based they lack basic privacy/security this is pure bad info.
@LearnToLivePrivate @Tutanota hi Micheal, not sure about the claim of lack of basic privacy/security - seems like the vault feature is good.. or am I being deceived? Yes subscription isn’t ideal, but if that means that there is proper support to the OS I am okay with it.
@ymarmash @Tutanota biggest ⛳ look at there last os update release for security second on privacy if you have to login well it says it all
@ymarmash @Tutanota this can go long but im hoping those will have you researching a bit more I really dont recommend using that phone or os
@ymarmash @Tutanota you dont have to take my word just dig a little deeper.
@LearnToLivePrivate @Tutanota thanks Natalie, did some DD and it turns out you’re right to flag it.
@ymarmash @Tutanota I recommend looking at @GrapheneOS I couldnt in good faith currently recommend any other os as of now!
@LearnToLivePrivate @Tutanota @GrapheneOS I understand and would typically agree, it just needs google pixels in order to operate, so it’s American hardware again. I’m leaning towards the Jolla phones but the lack of banking apps natively on th Linux based OS is not ideal or convenient. Oh well. I hope things will take a turn for European tech sovereignty soon.
@ymarmash @Tutanota @GrapheneOS your taking the wrong approach jolla is no better then punkt and every single one of those connects to google in more ways by default then graphene and they usually use microG which is usually given deep os permissions these are areas you already dont control and avoiding US is impossible as well beleive it or not your approach is backwards as much as you want to avoid google hardware and the US, parts of all phones are US big tech.
@Tutanota full boycott of capitalism is the only correct approach-- or do some people really think some capitalists are special and not prone to doing exactly what maga capitalists are doing now, because they've been allowed to get away with it? Genuinely curious if supporting capitalists seems to some minds to be a great way to deprive capitalists of power.
@Tutanota can't say that it is my favorite yet, but I pre-ordered a Jolla Phone. Hopefully it will be.
@Tutanota I was using some apps and like it, but i'm not EU
@Tutanota the amount of unsafe info in the comments is wild.
@Tutanota
Ich vermisse Proton!
@Tutanota Fiskars, definitely. Makes fantastic kitchen and garden tools.
@Tutanota For smartphones and smartphone OS, I suggest to add Iodé operating system from France to your list, where you also can buy smartphones with Iodé OS. @iode https://iode.tech/

Be Smarter Than Your Phone

@hehemrin Thanks! We will check these out.
@Tutanota
One more phone comment: Volla phone and Volla OS are not mentioned in the article, only in a referenced article.
@Tutanota Tuta, Mastodon, and Mullvad @mullvadnet doing god's work
@Tutanota I use Ecosia for a while now and it works pretty smooth 👍

@Tutanota Protonmail is probably my favourite so far, they're doing a great job at replacing googlemail, with others services included like password manager, calendar and now docs/sheets in their protondrive!

I just wish they'd be faster at pushing out linux apps and integration, especially for protondrive. I want to sync files on my desktop!

@Tutanota Mastadon, obviously ;-P
@Tutanota
Can any of these work on an apple m3 ?
@Tutanota
I an considering using duck duck go

@[email protected]

The EU is STILL trying to do #ChatControl

Maybe talk about that as your number 1 priority

@Tutanota

@GrapheneOS Tuta is mentioning /e/ again, now it's time to re-state your viewpoint.

@Tutanota Vivaldi is the fucking proprietary malware that is unethical and unjust, and should be boycotted and should never be used.
@rebel1725 @Tutanota any proof that they are “malware”?

@Tutanota You're recommending people use phones and operating systems without basic privacy and security patches/protections while claiming those are good for privacy. Fairphone, Murena and Jolla are not safe options. To promote their products, both Murena and Jolla heavily mislead people with inaccurate claims about what they provide and about multiple more private/secure options. People buying their products don't get crucial patches but are led to believe they do...

@GrapheneOS @Tutanota So, is there an option that gives good privacy, good security and "US-Free" hardware?
