"consumers aren't buying based on AI” is demonstrably untrue, because i am a consumer, and i buy based on AI. i see a product uses AI and i choose something else
Dell reveals people don't care about AI in PCs – and a new truly embarrassing Windows 11 fail shows why

Dell says people are 'not buying PCs based on AI' – just as a cringeworthy AI agent fail pops up with terrible timing for Microsoft.

@ozone89 @Ninji Living in Austin I know a shit load of ppl who worked for Dell. Everyone got laid off, they bet the farm on AI, and it took precisely one financial year for them to realize, “well, maybe this isn’t such a good idea after all…” Everyone who exited knew this would happen.

And these are THE GUYS who supply server racks and blades to datacenters. This is the single largest OEM in America (maybe Lenovo is bigger?) saying “AI should not be the core of our consumer OEM business”.

@power_zoey_g5 @ozone89 @Ninji And yet I saw 2 online ads for a Dell "AI PC" which showed a laptop. What's the point in running an LLM on a laptop?!

I guess they have spare stock to sell :-)

@Ninji same here, ensuring a product is LLM-free is a major part of my product purchase decision making process these days.
@Ninji stop! You’re confusing the poor executives with your complex product requirements!
@Ninji
I get them all day. I answer "Spam! How ya doin'?" They usually hang up right there.

@Ninji "consumers aren't buying, based on AI"

The comma might be tiny, but it's also powerful, and can invert the meaning of a sentence so easily.

@Ninji fun fact when I first read that quote I thought it means literally this. Like, consumers see AI, and they are not gonna buy

@Ninji

It tells you the manufacturer is a charlatan, useful info 😁

@Ninji
I will never buy a computer with a copilot key. FYI there are tons of super awesome used & refurbished pre-AI computers out there at pretty decent prices.
@Ninji me too! I avoid any product that has AI in it

@Ninji

That's my general stance: if someone uses AI, I'm no longer interested, because obviously the real product seems not good enough for them to show/describe.

Also I assume that most of what's described is a lie.

@Ninji

Im going to have to get a new Android soon and want one without AI.
What are the chances ????

@Godfrey642 @Ninji

Are you thinking of getting an Android that doesn't Dream of Electric Sheep?

@sibrosan @Ninji

Id consider anything that doesn't have AI. 🤪

@Ninji

I saw a study here recently where only 5% of people would pay extra for AI while nearly 70% would at least seriously consider dropping a product if it had AI they couldn't turn off.

@csstrowbridge @Ninji Sounds about right, the 1% with the majority of the wealth in the world are all in. Stands to reason those closest to them would want to ride their coattails.
@csstrowbridge @Ninji
i saw a survey on yougov last month that showed more people said they would pay extra for a version of something without AI, than said they would pay extra to have it added.

@Ninji Ex 20+ years Windows MCSE here.

I dropped out and deleted my account in 2025 because of the following:

-Windows 11 enforcing Microsoft accounts over local
- Copilot
- Recall
- Microsoft 365 subscription scheme
- Automatic saving of user data on OneDrive

- and for fucking around w/ Group Policy to enforce settings deliberately removed to customer preferences. Bloody Bastards!

I'm completely pissed off, and gone for good. Deleted all M$ s/w, no M$ subscriptions. After completion, any Windows machines turned into Linux with LibreOffice and other FOSS s/w (working like a charm), and M$ completely blocked in my home network via DNS.

Thank god I don't have to work with M$ anymore, so the above could easily be achieved. I am aware that not everyone can jump ship, but I pity you.

@Ninji @alice
But then… you are… *boycotting* on "AI", aren't you?

(Well, at least that's what I'm doing ;)

@Ninji

I share concerns over Microsoft’s integration of copilot into their computers. As an enterprise network administrator there are serious security implications. At the same time I am a robust user of AI and it has greatly improved many of my workflows. What I am against is stuffing AI into every consumer appliance and telling people it is no big deal. I want to choose when and how I use AI and I don’t want my tv to start the computer uprising.

@Ninji AI can be used to provide lots of useful tools. None of them are tools I want, especially with the current surveillance society, thanks.
@Ninji i mean, it is correct that customers *aren't buying* based on AI, then :D

@Ninji went to update to newest macOS tonight until all the features of the update were ai garbage.

No thank you. I just want my laptop to work how it didn when I purchased it

You know what I want instead?

#Linux support - and I mean fully!
#Keyboards with
#Trackpoints!
#RepairableTech
instead of AntiRepairDesign!

Me too
Which is why I have a second hand business think pad, I5 processor 8GB Ram, antiX linux great performance.

And tough.

@Kerplunk @Ninji granted, #ThinkPads get #enshittified too.

  • The latest generation #Trackpoint is so shallow that it's physically painful to use, making it pointless.

i have not found it painful, but badly done for sure.

Lenovo has also shown a new model without the feature, not sure how that will go down with business users.

Personally I am not in the market for a new Thinkpad, still plenty of good second hand options available.

@Kerplunk @Ninji needless to say relying on the #UsedMarket is not sustainable and in many places not even an option… (video via #LowSpecGamer)

@Ninji @creideiki they can’t make line go up for their trillions spent on AI tho with that!
