Sleep is going to be elusive so am starting a thread with info about ICE protests, vigils, and demonstrations being held from 1/8 onward all around the U.S.

8 am, 1/8, #SantaFe #NewMexico ABOLISH ICE banner drop, Rodeo at St. Francis. 1/

@heidilifeldman

I mean, I understand this is a tragedy, and a good rallying cry. At the same time I'm a bit concerned how much this sounds like "leopard ate the wrong person's face".

@riverpunk @heidilifeldman

"ICE killed a US citizen" sounds to me very much like "ICE should only kill US subjects, and people otherwise without voting franchise".

Otherwise "ICE killed a person" would be the rallying cry.

@iju @heidilifeldman the point is to stop ICE not critique the protest. I'm sure we agree!

ice must be stopped.

@dannotdaniel @heidilifeldman

We do agree.

I'm just reminded of a very poor joke from my childhood, which starts by mentioning that Nazis killed six million jews, and a clown.

When asked why kill a clown, the jokester (who with this joke identifies themself as an antisemite) answers: see, nobody cares about the Jews.

In conclusion, I'm just somewhat distraught about rallying cries that set one group of humanity a bridge too far.

(Even if it is, like I mentioned, a good rally call.)

@dannotdaniel @heidilifeldman

And I wish to underline that I'm not calling anyone a racist, or playing favourites with different groups under the US law, just that rally calls tend to snowball, and thus the arguments they make should be considered carefully.

@iju @heidilifeldman I understand your concern.

all killings should be protested

of course

@heidilifeldman Here's the sign I made to hold out for my neighbors and visitors today, 3:30-4:30pm in Kennebunk, ME #Indivisible
@heidilifeldman The sign has a backside, and a GoPro mounted on its pole recording all who see it...
Explain it to me like I'm 5: How are nonviolent tactics going to protect us when #ICE #Nazis decide to shoot us, unprovoked, in the head?
@heidilifeldman Avidly waiting for Boston, so I can pass the info on to a family member there.
