I think I just do not believe that computation is the critical resource gating the social-political changes that will improve human life in the next century. I believe the critical resources are real-world (non-automateable) human labor, human coordination, human care. I believe computation can help support those but any economic model where "compute is the new oil" is disastrously off the mark and will accelerate the climate collapse we need the labor and coordination and care to mitigate.
chips/datacenters are among the most complex objects we know how to produce. but complexity is not the measure of human well-being - it has distracted us and become a point of intellectual vanity. our needs and dreams are ultimately simple, and our goals for a long term sustainable society depend on coordination, care, and labor.

@jplebreton when i was a kid, something that blew my mind was that dual booting to redhat 3 (maybe it was 2?) and running the binary for quake2 ran something like twice as fast as on windows. I was sold instantly. I must have been.. 15?

since then, there have been so many layers of abstractions piled onto the raw hardware. why does chrome need tens of gigs of ram?! because javascript. because other layers.

imagine how much power we'd get if we went down the metal again and started over

@Viss @jplebreton agreed...

The amount of #Bloatware is just absurd these days.

What we need is a #LightWeightWeb that refuses all that #Bloat and #Junk.

Something like #FrogFind by @ActionRetro, but instead of a #WebProxy just good #Websites that provide said information without demanding literal megabytes in bloat!

@Viss @jplebreton @ActionRetro ...something that is useable on #Iridium and other #Narrowband networks and doesn't discriminate against @torproject #Tor users if not has an #OnionService to work off!

@Viss @jplebreton BTW: Thanks to @alecm / @alecmuffett and contributors at @torproject for making #OnionBalance so big sites like @dw_innovation / #DWnews work reliably on #Tor!
