Venezuela also produces heavy crude - the same stuff Canada ships south to the US - securing Venezuela's supply helps the US in the trade war.

US production is mainly of light-sweet crude which the US does NOT have refineries for - just the heavy crude. The irony is that Canadian supply replaced the original Venezuelan supply way back when when relations soured and the US then switched to Canada for its foreign oil.
