There is so much censorship in the EU that 7 of the 8 countries with the most freedom of the press are EU member states.

@jmaris

Just adding for reference the link to the complete list. Looks like all of the older EU states are way above the US, just a few are below including Hungary (with little dictator Orban), Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria.

So as a service here is the current list:
https://rsf.org/en/index

Index

RSF's World Press Freedom Index aims to compare the level of press freedom enjoyed by journalists and media in 180 countries and territories.

@jmaris Yeah going after people for nazi salutes is literally the axis freedom of speech revolves around.
@gimulnautti it's funny how their understanding of freedom of speech is "my right to advocate against your right to exist"
@jmaris sounds like they should stop their alliance with the American fascists.
@jmaris and DE doesn´t even is on the list in sight 😂
@cyb3rrunn3r Germany is 11th, well ahead of the US (57th)

@jmaris but if you measure "press only repeats what its leader says", I'm sure the US would come in third, or second!

Let's make a

"FIFA freedom of the press"

Award. It goes automatically to the country hosting the next world championship!

@jmaris If they're so free how come they've censored entries 9 through 56? :P
Jordan Maris 🇪🇺 🇺🇦 #NAFO (@[email protected])

@jmaris What, you mean Husk, Drumph etc are WRONG about Europe... I'm shocked....

😆

@jmaris top 15 all European. All EU except nr 1 (Norway) and 9 (Switzerland)
@KFvMalssen @jmaris and both of those are very closely aligned with the EU anyway. Norway is in the EEA, and both Norway and Switzerland are in Schengen.
@jmaris please correct alt text. Nr 1 is Norway. Iceland is nr 17. Still pretty good
@jmaris ... and the 1st is so closely affiliated with the EU that it makes almost no difference.
@jmaris finland is up there only bc no one has really challenged the “freedom of press” here by publishing anti-nazigovernment articles.
@jmaris This guy Musk is extremely evil. His companies should really be boycotted in Europe: Tesla, Starlink, X. We have EU alternatives for each one of them.
@pisicapissy @jmaris We have so many companies and so many talents to compete with this gentleman. We don't need their services or technology. Between him and Trump, they want to end the European Union.
@jmaris The bar is so low it's easy to be in the top 10 🙁. If you look at the Reporters without Borders freedom of press index, year after year, it's worse and worse, even in Europe.

@jmaris

Genuinely amazed that Ireland ranks so highly.

@faduda @jmaris well, the Irish press aren't exactly testing the limits of their freedom on a typical week.

What need to bring them to heel?

@jmaris

And Canada is even lower than the States because 1 American, a far right Republican, bought 98% of English language newspapers. Canada's news system is owned by a US trumper.

Calgary Herald, Edmonton Journal, Vancouver Sun, Province, Ottawa Citizen, National Post, the SUN papers, the small town papers.

It was illegal for news to be foreign owned before Harper. But Liberals went along. Still.

@kevinrns Toronto Star is owned by right leaning US Hedge Fund also. @jmaris

@Alison @jmaris

I thought it was a single Canadian far right funder of racists billionaire?

@kevinrns Perhaps previously but I clearly remember the buyout as I stopped following it for news shortly after. The change was apparent on some key stories at the time. @jmaris
@kevinrns The newspaper was acquired by NordStar Capital on May 26, 2020, after the board of Torstar voted to sell the company to the investment firm for CA$52 million—making Torstar a privately held company.[43] The deal was expected to be approved by Torstar's shareholders and to close by the end of 2020.[44] Canadian Modern Media Holdings made an offer of $58 million on July 9, 2020;[45] NordStar subsequently increased its offer to $60 million, effectively ending the bidding war.[45] The majority of shareholders voted in favour of the deal.[46] The takeover was approved by an Ontario judge on July 27, 2020.[47] An appeal of the judgement by another prospective purchaser failed on July 31 when Ontario Superior Court Justice Michael Penny dismissed the motion.

@Alison

"Torstar was purchased by NordStar Capital LP, which is owned by Jordan Bitove" Wikipedia

He is funder of the far right, like the Racist Peoples Party among others.

It is now, with search being further and furthered censored and wrecked, very hard to find anytging.

But here's some. Canadaland has other stuff.

@Alison @jmaris

The Toronto Star, while Trump announces invasion and economic subversion, and Musk is saluting dead Hitler, spent their time advertising Cluster trucks. The object of worldwide disdain because of EVIL.

And far right funder of racist political parties in Canada? His paper is doing advertorial for the tesla truck.

@jmaris whoa, even Pepsi does better than the USA, with a strong third finish.
@jmaris Damn my ancestors for immigrating to the US!

@jmaris Now imagine what would be the ranking of Texas, Alabama... were they independent states. We'll they'd compete with Russia.
