I see so much gaslighting of people who are struggling to find jobs at junior and mid-level cybersecurity by folks who got their last job or first job before 2023. It's unreal and uncalled for. The market and the automation in the hiring processes have gone to hell. https://www.reddit.com/r/SecurityCareerAdvice/comments/1o1d3eb/i_am_an_underpaid_l1_soc_analyst_with_2_yoe_was/

@hacks4pancakes I moved internally to a cybersecurity role at the end of 2023 and I've had friends struggle to 'get in' since then. I also feel limited about any mobility at this point. Feels like the gears are locked up.
@hacks4pancakes and such absurd recommendations to tweak applications with LLMs - which has caused a full 360 trust collapse (am not in cybersecurity- but I guess it’s the same there as well)
like you said - personal link chains seem to be the only thing reliable nowadays
@number137 its so bad. LLMs vs LLMs.
@hacks4pancakes @number137
So true. LLMs model the past.
@hacks4pancakes this anchoring feels like boomers looking back on their own experience to tell millennials that everything in a good life is easily affordable if you just budget
@ferrix @hacks4pancakes 'just get a job sweeping the shop and eventually they'll appreciate your grit and teach you [skill]'

@hacks4pancakes @mwl I've reached an age where I'm working my last job. But I *talk* to the young people, and I read the news. I honestly don't think I could get a job in the current environment. It was bad enough when they'd scan your resume into a database, but only part of it. Now I have to hide a prompt injection to get past the AI.

Even my own company no longer allows the hiring manager to interview anyone. I'm highly qualified, and have friends on that project recommending me. No Joy.

@hacks4pancakes it is moral hazard and gatekeeping combined or in other words, a lot of politics
@hacks4pancakes
I am senior level in IT (not cybersecurity). I am suffering the same problem. It’s disheartening when finally something pops up that doesn’t completely suck, and despite having been published only 2 hours ago claims to have 100+ applications already.
I don’t get through that first AI defense line. I never even hear back. They could at least have the curtesy to send AI generated no thank yous…
Also, if you don’t fit the mould, no chance for development (certainly not at my age).

@samy @hacks4pancakes

I've been looking for the next opportunity for five years now, have 40+ years experience as an ICT professional, and obviously the bots have decided that I'm too old to be useful, never make it past the first gate.

It's disheartening to put it mildly.

The only way is through contacts these days. I hope the tide will turn!
@hacks4pancakes I appreciate a post like this, makes me feel less crazy

@hacks4pancakes

Corporations: "we're using AI to filter out applicants who use AI to tailor their resume. Also we expect applicants to use AI to protect our customers against AI-fueled threats. Applicants must also use AI to be twice as productive as the laid-off employees they are replacing for half the wages.

We will be using AI to monitor productivity."

@hacks4pancakes

My theory is that the automation exists to weed out people with experience that the orgs do not want to pay a good salary to.

@hacks4pancakes reddit users have some of the worse takes when it comes to entering into cybersecurity.
