Using Tails When Your World Doesn't Feel Safe Anymore

When browsing the web at home becomes dangerous to your safety, there are tools that can help minimizing your digital traces to stay safe. Tails is one of these tools. Here's why, when, and how you can install and use Tails.

why do I need my tails flash drive I wonder?

I wonder if it's possible that Linux could be backdoored soon.
@gorujocy @Em0nM4stodon if you're not in the loop, the state of the world rn

@pepperz @Em0nM4stodon

I mean sure, I was just thinking what law is it passing to prompt her to say that or something.

@gorujocy @Em0nM4stodon there is a lot of censorship laws that are being promoted due to a political figure passing. Or rather threats than laws to be honest.
@Em0nM4stodon Tails is the best ✅. Kleopatra is handy. OnionShare can finally also be used for messages in the latest version. KeePassXC can also be used for notes or to encrypt other document types too. Metadata Cleaner can remove metadata like ExifTool, but for GUIs. MAC addresses are also randomized when run from bare metal. Etc. etc. It would have been terrific if Linuxbrew were preinstalled and Dangerzone could be installed via Linuxbrew; there is only a Mac cask.
@Em0nM4stodon this works as a message for both privacy advocates and the furry group chat

@Em0nM4stodon Oh yeah. DONT LET ANYONE ELSE MAKE A TAILS STICK FOR YOU. AND DONT USE BALENA ETCHER!!!

Maybe unnessacary to say, but prepare the usb yourself, so you know exactly what is going to be on the usb stick, since others can put malware onto it.

@venthewolf Yes but only IF the traces of the installation on your system and network aren't dangerous to you in your unique threat model.

@venthewolf @Em0nM4stodon

Haven't used Balena Etcher in a while, but what's wrong with it? Using ventoy these days, or is that also insecure?

@CaptainAyeAye@universeodon.com @venthewolf@meow.social Balena Etcher had some issues with collecting some data (file name of the image and the model of the USB stick) from users on Windows (https://tails.net/news/rufus/). In the tutorial linked-above, I do inform people to disabled telemetry on Balena Etcher *before* flashing the USB stick, even if the tutorial was published before this news was released. Unfortunately, there isn't a clearly more private, accessible, and tested alternative for installation on macs (which the tutorial is focused on). I have contacted Balena Etcher, Tor, and Raspberry Pi to get clarity on this and propose a better replacement, but have not received any replies at this time. Nonetheless, disabling telemetry as shown might mitigate this data collection.

@venthewolf @Em0nM4stodon What is the issue with Balena Etcher? And what do you suggest as an alternative?

Tails - Replacing balenaEtcher with Rufus as installer for Windows

@Em0nM4stodon @venthewolf Thank you. I had missed that bit of news.
@Em0nM4stodon I always carry it with me - you never know when it might come in handy
@Em0nM4stodon great info! Thanks for sharing this esy to follow tutorial.
@R3dactd Thank you! 💚

@Em0nM4stodon I loaded Tails and ran tails on the command line, but only tail was found.

I feel deceived 😢 /j

@Em0nM4stodon thanks for the reminder. I have it downloaded just need to mount it on a USB

@Em0nM4stodon

<insert wagging tail animation here>

@Em0nM4stodon Good work 👏 It would be great if we could just uninstall the fascists
@ecoscore Thank you! Agreed, if only I could just reformat this timeline's partition drive to solve this, I would.

@Em0nM4stodon

With the caveat that I am not knowledgeable enough to vouch for this, I think anyone concerned about privacy (and in today's America, anyone should think about risks) should take a look.

@Em0nM4stodon
Really about covering one's tail, isn't it?
@Em0nM4stodon *groans in a million seals* I hate this... let me find a usb that isn't being used, but I should be able to use my ventoy with it.
@Em0nM4stodon looks like I can't boot directly from ventoy? Le sigh.
@alex02 @Em0nM4stodon
yeah it has to be a dedicated flash drive...
@gorujocy @Em0nM4stodon whole point of ventoy was to reduce the number of usb drives, but I am currently now carrying 3 usbs. Still better than like 10. I do understand why they don't want people using ventoy for tails, but ffs. Can't be that hard to create a live boot usb with most of the privacy stuff and also why gnome? Such a bloated pos.

@Em0nM4stodon

I know you're pro-Tor in general. What is your opinion on Whonix?

@Em0nM4stodon great write up. Would be great if it supports Mac with M processors tho.
@alexicharles Thank you!! And indeed, I agree it would be great.
@Em0nM4stodon So how DOES one secure one's M series Mac? I don't have a Windows or Linux machine handy either to create this or to use it.

@lhauser Unfortunately, I am not aware of a Tails-equivalent that would boot from a M series Mac (at this time). But depending on your needs, there could be other tools that would at least help to reduce some digital traces in different ways, even while using a M series Mac.

You can track where the Tails is at on this here: https://gitlab.tails.boum.org/tails/tails/-/issues/10972

@Em0nM4stodon Shit, thanks for the reminder!
