Hi everyone! πŸ‘‹ I know it's been a while since I was last here, but I had a very specific reason for it. I've spent the last few months with my small team intensely developing a project I mentioned to you once before. Every moment of my inactivity here was simply coding, designing the architecture, and endlessly solving problems

Today, I am proud to announce - LibreConnect has moved past the phase of vague plans and become a fully functional app!

We managed to deliver what was absolutely most important to us - an ecosystem connecting your πŸ’» computer and πŸ“± smartphone that respects your privacy 100%. Zero external clouds and hidden telemetry. Everything is based exclusively on a direct P2P connection within your local network and strong E2E encryption πŸ”

So, what can our app actually do?
- Virtual camera and microphone from your phone
- Mobile device file manager right from your PC πŸ“
- Notification and clipboard synchronization πŸ“‹
- Receiving and sending SMS/MMS from your computer πŸ’¬
- Two-way media playback control 🎡
- Remote keyboard and presentation control from your phone
- Finding your phone by triggering a loud alarm (overriding silent mode) 🚨
- And a few other minor conveniences

We also made sure the project is truly cross-platform. LibreConnect runs natively on  Linux,  macOS,  Windows, and  Android. It's worth mentioning that the app isn't limited to just x86_64 architecture - we support ARM64 as well! To make updates easier, we've set up our own F-Droid repository, along with native packages for Linux package managers (APT, DNF, Pacman)

The code is 100% open-source under the GNU GPL v3.0 license  However, I have to be honest - the project is still very young. The app is highly usable, but it still requires optimization, might have some silly bugs, and can occasionally be unstable πŸ›

That's why we need you so much right now. For the continued development of this app to make any sense, we need a small but engaged user base. I encourage you to install it, test it out, and report bugs, and for those interested - to join the project as contributors (you'll find a CONTRIBUTING.md in the repo) 🀝

If you like our vision, leaving a star ⭐ on our GitHub repository is the form of support we would appreciate the most. It's these stars that will allow us to take the project out into the world! Because of this, for the next few days, my activity here will focus mainly on promoting the app and its features - we need your help to build the right momentum. Thank you in advance for your support!

Needless to say, do not sign up for W or give them your ID information no matter how simple they eventually manage to make it.

You simply don’t need to.

You’re already in a far superior – non-corporate, federated – space.

Do not sign up for W. And warn your friends.

The only time you have any power to stop this is now. If they succeed in gaining network effects, you will be as powerless to stop them as you are with X.

And yes, they’re just another venture capital funded surveillance capitalist, people farmer, and burgeoning Nazi Bar. They just happen to be based in the EU. (As Nazi Bars traditionally have been.)

We built an initial release of GrapheneOS based on Android 17 (2026061700) but aren't going to release it through our Alpha channel due to discovering a serious upstream bug. Android 17 broke support for sideloading updates via recovery unless the OS images are large enough to exhaust COW space.

Our statement on the UK government’s demand that all content on all devices sold or used in the country be scanned, on the presumption of nudity, using a dystopian combination of age verification and content scanning. This proposal will not safeguard children. It endangers us all.

@orontee @dancingtreefrog I knew this question was going to pop up eventually πŸ˜… It's a totally valid one. KDE Connect is a fantastic piece of software, and honestly, we wouldn't have started this project if it weren't for some specific frustrations we had with it.

But getting straight to the point, the absolute biggest difference and the main reason we built LibreConnect from scratch are the Virtual Devices. They are the core of our app. We built native Virtual Camera and Microphone integration right into the ecosystem. Old FOSS tools that used to do this (like DroidCam) went heavily commercial, and we simply wanted a normal and free alternative that respects privacy without any hidden catches. If the project gets enough support, we'd love to tackle virtual monitors and speakers next.

Beyond that, another very important thing was treating every platform equally. KDE Connect is amazing on Linux, but because it's such a massive monolithic project, porting it means the Windows and macOS versions feel a bit neglected (with Mac still basically being a Nightly build). We wanted an architecture that works exactly the same everywhere. Plus, it always bugged me how fragmented it is - having a completely separate app shortcut just to send an SMS always felt weird. We designed LibreConnect to have absolutely everything in one modern, clean interface. That's exactly why we went with a slightly less standard .one domain.

We also tried to push the standard features a bit deeper. For example, instead of just mirroring notification pushes, you can actively browse and dismiss your phone's notifications directly from your PC. Another example is the remote keyboard - you aren't limited to basic text from your mobile screen, you can actually hit special system keys like Ctrl, Alt, Del, or the Super key. We also have plans to add optional, privacy-friendly history logs for notifications and the clipboard later on. There are more examples of this deeper integration, but these are just the ones that came to mind first.

Another thing I can mention is that I used to get some annoying real-time sync lags with KDE Connect (maybe it was just my setup?), whereas LibreConnect feels incredibly snappy in comparison. But despite all that, what I must admit is that KDE Connect still holds a key advantage that we are actively striving for - it is currently much more stable and handles battery management better. Anyway, we are building a new standard on modern foundations without the legacy technical debt, and getting to that perfect stability is exactly why we need community support right now.

I would really appreciate it if you gave it a try and shared your feedback! πŸš€

We were likely going to be able to release experimental Pixel 10 support very soon and it's getting disrupted. The attacks on our team with ongoing libel and harassment have escalated, raids on our chat rooms have escalated and more. It's rough right now and support is appreciated.

@GrapheneOS is being threatened by French authorities for refusing to add backdoors and they're dealing with coordinated attacks in French media right now. They're pulling out of France entirely, moving all their servers, and fighting off a wave of bullshit one-sided reporting that makes them look like they're helping criminals.

They need us to fight back. Support them however you can, whether that's a dollar, sharing their story, pushing back on the garbage news coverage when you see it, or just telling someone you know about what's happening. All of it matters because they're drowning in attacks from governments and media and bad actors who want them gone.

This is the only Android OS that actually makes me feel like privacy isn't just marketing. They fight for us now they need us to fight for them.

The EU is pushing Chat Control and creating an environment where governments feel empowered to threaten developers into compliance, and if we stay quiet we're letting it happen. Show up for them in whatever way you're able to.
