1. Remote role ✅
2. Norway 🇳🇴 visa application ✅
3. ...who knows!?

2 years ago I decided I wanted to move to Norway, not knowing when or how. Today I applied for my visa. Things are in storage, shippers are lined up, and it finally feels real. So excited for the next chapter!

@sommer Awesome! 👋🏻 from a Norwegian.
@sommer Lykke til! I’d love to convince my family to move there someday too.
@sommer good luck with the move! :)
@sommer wow that’s amazing! Those Norwegians are lucky to have you!
@sommer same ! Norway is awesome 😎 dip into that investor fund and make cool things … they’re lucky to have you!!!
@sommer that is so cool! I wish I had the resources/capability to do something similar. I hope it is everything you hope for and more!
@sommer very well done! I made a similar move a few years ago, if I had to change something, I would have shipped much less stuff and decluttered more, still keeping the flexibility of being remote.
@glotcha so fair! I already minimized massively when I came back from nyc. Now I feel like I hardly own anything so luckily I’m starting very small!
@sommer oh hell yeah! Congratulations! Snakker du norsk?
@sommer Awesome! Hope you’ll like it here. Feel free to let me know if you need any help when you get here (or have questions about the application process.. my wife works at UDI :))
@romnes oh wow! Thank you!! I really appreciate the offer and might take you up on it! So much to figure out when I arrive. (Tho I’m doing as much research as I can now ofc)
@sommer Having moved to 🇫🇷 where I didn't speak the language, then 🇺🇸 where a lot of life stuff (taxes, health care, etc) works differently; I can relate 😅
@romnes Oh wow! You've certainly seen all sides! What were some of the most challenging parts for you? (If it can fit in a Mastodon post, ofc!)
@sommer Life got in the way of Masto for a minute there 😅 Definitely the language in 🇫🇷. Never got around to learning french. In 🇺🇸 it was mostly navigating life stuff. This one's a bit fuzzier, but as an example; figuring out how to file taxes correctly in a system that appears to favour buying software from a private company to do so (whereas in 🇳🇴 my taxes are pre-filled and usually don't require my input at all). Definitely needed someone to ELI5 stuff like that to me a couple of times 😆

@romnes oh god ...I am NOT excited about doing taxes in 2 countries and trying to figure out how to avoid double taxation... very scary!

Thank you for sharing your experience!

@sommer beautiful country, on a beautiful continent, good luck! Visit the Netherlands sometime, it's around the corner
@sommer so happy to hear that, welcome!
@zmalltalker thank you! Such a wonderful place - I’m very excited to be returning to Oslo!

@sommer Good luck!

Hope you already have plans on how to deal with the wet and dark of Oslo November. I have fellow life-long Norwegians who need a sun-lamp and a noonday walk outside to get through the no-snow, little sun season.

@btuftin Haha I actually spent my winter there last year specially to make sure I could "handle" the wet, dark! I actually managed quite well - just making sure to take walks, rain or shine, during the "daylight" hours every day. I come from the Pacific Northwest in the USA which is our rainiest area as well, tho not quite so dark/cold.
@sommer velkommen skal du være ☺️
@sommer huge! Congrats 🎉🎊🎈
@sommer Good luck! What an adventure! I hope it all goes well for you. Norway is such a beautiful country
@sommer Congratulations! That is very exciting. Enjoy the adventure!
@annemhitchcock Thank you Anne! Hopefully we'll continue to cross paths at work! <3
@sommer Very cool!! Congratulations!!
@sommer Congratulations! Do share more details please!
