“Discipline matters more than motivation."

This has been so true for me! Showing up to my rope, to my flute, to my tech job, to my meditation practice, to my journal, to stretching…just showing up has been the thing that made my life feel full. There wasn’t anything magical—just choosing to do to what I believed was worthwhile, day after day.

Great read on the topic: https://maalvika.substack.com/p/why-are-we-lying-to-young-people

why are we lying to young people about work?

Now that WWDC is over I’m back on the rope at my usual training cadence. I’m not sure how… but I didn’t seem to lose any strength this year, despite the massive training reduction March thru June! #circus #aerialrope

Always thought I couldn’t haggle, but today I had to. Someone charged me $500 for something I knew I could get for $200. I paid and went to my car to regroup. I told myself I’d role-play someone who does this all the time, for fun! I put on a big smile and went back.

I got it for $230.

A thing I’ve learned from both sides and in many ways—work, family, romance, etc:

Pressure to stay never made me—or someone else—want to stay. It just made us feel bad about leaving. Sometimes we stayed out of guilt, and resentment was seeded. Sometimes we left feeling hurt, too wounded to consider a return.

The old phrase goes something like “if you love someone, let them go.” I think it's simpler. Just let everyone go if they want, and come as they will.

I guess you've heard some bad jokes about Fibonacci sequences?

Well, this one is as bad as the last two you heard put together.

The longer I'm a manager, the less I think the job is about talking to people and the more I think the job is about help people talk to each other.
Deeply relatable content.

Huge thank you to everyone who shared my post about Smalltalk, the cat. (https://macaw.social/@sommer/114740941758047890)

I've found a couple amazing candidates and I'm learning more about them now.

I feel very grateful for all the reach that post got, and even tho it's super difficult for me to consider re-homing my girl, now talking to awesome humans who are excited to give her a home is helping me feel better - all thanks to you all!

Attached: 1 image Hey folks - for health reasons (mine, not hers!) I may need to soon re-home my amazing cat, Smalltalk! If you live in the SF Bay Area and might be interested, please ping me! She's truly a wonderful sweet creature! (She'd do best as an only pet.)
