I am about to try and weane myself off of big American tech. It feels like a Sisyphus task. Whenever these smaller new companies with nice values get big enough to actually work with multiple people and devices, they get bought/taken over/corrupted and we’re back to square one. Remember when Google was new and its motto literally “Don’t be evil” and Apple was the more ethical alternative?
@ibenb I’m learning to use #Ubuntu, #Vivaldi and #LibreOffice to replace #Windows, #Chrome and M$ Office, I’ve just moved all my photos from #Google Photos to @ente. Eventually I hope to swap my #iPhone for a #FairPhone running /e/ os. You’re right though; it is Sisyphean! Just gotta keep pushing those rocks.
@LMac1970 @ente Good for you! I don’t have the time or, frankly, the spoons to learn all that.

@ibenb @LMac1970 @ente

#Linux is not so hard, just that you have to choose the suitable #distro.

#firstSteps #Ubuntu

@ThePfromtheO @LMac1970 @ente Yeah, you’ve lost me already with “distro” (I don’t need it explained) My point is, I’m sure it’s probably fine once you get to know it but doing that is still work that takes time and doing it with several different things add up.

@ibenb @LMac1970 @ente

Oh, really? I thought it would actually help 🫤

Linux #distro #firstSteps #Ubuntu

@ThePfromtheO @LMac1970 @ente With all due respect, I think you’re too enmeshed in software development to know what is helpful for people who are not. I had to google “distro” and the explanation in the screenshot makes absolutely no sense to me. I’m sure I could learn, and it wouldn’t be all that hard, but once again, it would take research, time and mental bandwidth that I don’t have. Which is my entire point. We can’t keep up.
@ibenb @ThePfromtheO @ente I totally get that. But I can really recommend #Ente though. Nice and easy to just shift everything. And #Vivaldi’s just another web browser, so that’s no biggie. The rest, well, it’s fine if you feel like it and the M$ bills are looking steep. But only do stuff if you want - there’s no immediate imperative really. I know they tell us Linux change your life, but I’m old and I do think things get overstated sometimes.
@LMac1970 @ThePfromtheO @ente I’m actually looking at Vivaldi right now. How does it compare to DuckDuckGo? I like the privacy of DDG but am honestly not impressed with its search results and general functionality.
@LMac1970 @ThePfromtheO @ente I don’t really use google photos, I just store all my photos in Dropbox (which I am in the process of moving to proton drive). So I don’t know if Ente would even be relevant?
@LMac1970 @ThePfromtheO @ente I’ve also switched to libreoffice on my home laptop. Hate it so far 😂
@ibenb @ThePfromtheO @ente It’s not quite MS Office is it?
@LMac1970 @ThePfromtheO @ente It really isn’t. It’s far too busy, unpleasant to look at and does weird things with pasted text. On the other hand I’ve just downloaded Vivaldi and that seems very promising!
@LMac1970 @ThePfromtheO Urgh spoke to soon. Bookmarks not syncing to my work phone. Spent so far 45 mins of precious work time on this and that is EXACTLY what I mean.
@LMac1970 @ThePfromtheO Phew! Solved it!
@ibenb @ThePfromtheO Syncing personal bookmarks to a work system is one of those things I’ve never even thought about! 🤷‍♂️
@LMac1970 @ThePfromtheO Illustrative of another problem: we all have so vastly different needs, that I often get recommended systems and software which are of absolutely no use to me - simply because it doesn't have the tweaks or features I need. We built up our preferences through trial and error, which I guess is another reason that switching software is so cumbersome.
@ibenb It truly is. I’ve been known to moan about some data issue with SQL Server and the most annoying thing is when a FOSS friend will tell me that the solution is to make my employers switch to some other open source product I’ve never used. The w orld is not like that! So you have my complete sympathy.
@LMac1970 Lol yeah that’s not happening 😂

@ibenb @LMac1970 @ente
You're not the only one! 😆
I like #OnlyOffice more. Looks very similar to #MSOffice

#officeTool #officeTools

@ThePfromtheO @ibenb @ente Hmm, maybe I’ll have a look at that too! Mind you, I don’t do much office work on y home machine so it probably doesn’t matter much for me.

@ibenb @LMac1970 @ThePfromtheO Hey there, we offer many features specifically for photo storage and management. Like on-device AI to quickly search your library or find pictures containing certain people!

@ibenb @ThePfromtheO @ente Ah fair nuff then. I’ve not used that very much.
@ibenb @ThePfromtheO @ente Funny you should say that! I now use #Vivaldi with its search engine set to #DuckDuckGo!
@LMac1970 @ibenb @ThePfromtheO @ente Same but I also enable duckduckgo app tracking protection for secure network and protecting myself from google trying to see what shows I am watching

You can capture data within the DuckDuckGo so-called private browser on a website like Facebook's https://t.co/u8W44qvsqF and you'll see that DDG does NOT stop data flows to Microsoft's Linkedin domains or their Bing advertising domains. iOS + Android proof: 👀🫥😮‍💨🤡⛈️⚖️💸💸💸
