@somebody Unlocking Xiaomi bootloaders is one of the most annoying tasks imaginable.

Good that some people are getting creative.

If somebody buys a phone, they should own it.

@kallisti @somebody for real? I remember when they were a classic choice for people who wanted to unlock them, did they make it bad?
@marta @kallisti @somebody yes, you need to sign up somewhere, request unlock, wait two months (different for some models) and your memory will be wiped.
@marta
yea, xiaomi follows the classic chinese phone vendor cycle
@kallisti @somebody
@7331 @kallisti @somebody I have a fucking Huawei that can't be unlocked because these cunts stopped providing the unlocking service for the model dkdvdodbdk

Sad to see xiaomi move towards that

Fortunately pixels exist now
@marta @7331

You "own" a huawei?! You really are a masochist for that one.

@kallisti @somebody
@violetpixel @7331 @kallisti @somebody well, that was like 2 phone changes ago, it was a Mate 20 pro
@violetpixel if you're curious my phones from newest to oldest were

Google pixel 8a
Samsung zflip 3
Huawei mate 20 pro
Google pixel 2xl
LG g4
Xiaomi redmi 5 plus
Some cheapo chinese noname
Samsung dumbphone and Samsung running their pre-android touch OS interchangeably
And I think I had a Nokia at some point?

Might be forgetting something
@marta @kallisti @somebody last time i bought a xiaomi phone (2021/22) i had to verify my account t with phone number and then submit a unlock request which took an entire week for them to approve. but now i think you have to have a certain activity level in their forum to do it as well

wow this post is going crazy. get a union card and organize your workplace today!
i lowkey wish this worked on here and not just twitter but it's not even an algo dependent thing, its just that the many fediverse things are very bad at showing threads sometimes
@somebody fediverse thing [this one]
@somebody bro i am not unionizing against myself
@somebody HAHAHAHAHAHA brilliant
@somebody hahaha be gay do crimes
@SuperSluether @somebody is it that much of a crime? it's your phone after all

@me @SuperSluether @somebody

I can't wait until #LinuxPhones are good enough to be mainstream. Unfortunately, they're just not up to par yet.

Google and Apple have a monopoly on mobile phones, and it shows. And then companies like Xiaomi actively make it worse.

If you want to take a look at Linux Phones, I's recommend a secondary phone. Currently, #PostmarketOS and #SailfishOS are the two largest ones, AFAIK

#DeviceOwnership #Android #Fastboot #LinuxMobile

@agender_kiwi @me @SuperSluether @somebody how about e/os/ by murena, that is pre installed on the fairphone. All android apps I use work with it and it is open source, de-googled.
Using it since a couple of days and it feels great!
@Ainar_von_Fieln @agender_kiwi @me @SuperSluether @somebody e/os/ works with android apps because it is android. It is nice to be able to buy a degoogled android device for non technical users though
@agender_kiwi @me @SuperSluether @somebody the year of the Linux phone will come soon, I'm sure
@zvyn Yeah, just after the Year of the Linux Desktop #yeahrightmate
@somebody yeah sounds about right

@kallisti @somebody If you think that's bad, a lot of American devices basically can't be. Sometimes someone may find an exploit, but generally speaking, if you buy any that were made for some like Verizon, you may have to count on it not even being possible even if it's a line that normally allows unlocking. The worst thing is, when buying any phone where such models exist online, you have to be very very careful, checking with the seller and a lot of online research to make sure to get one where a bootloader unlock is possible (especially tricky if buying new where it may still be sealed in a box.)

I've heard sometimes some can crack the key for a hefty fee, but this is hardly guaranteed and shockingly risky...

@somebody xiaomi unlock store%

@SteffoSpieler @somebody i love how the employees act like they just stole something โ€‹โ€‹

"Most security vulnerabilities are just social engineering".

@somebody So are the stores able to avoid Xiaomi community limits on unlocking?
@somebody hmm interesting
@somebody it should be mandated by law that there should be options for you to unlock the bootloader and get boot, on android these could be in developer options
@somebody do their stores have the ability to unlock the bootloader differently? Also older models? That seems indeed useful as I tried to help somebody with a locked bootloader and found no way to get it to unlock through the official procedure. Would they not just help you to unlock it if you ask them?
