If you need some joy in your day, this is my gift to you. Jon Batiste is a gem of a human being. He is also massively talented.

In this interview from 2023 with Chris Wallace, Jon talks about the limitations genres put on music. And THEN he genre hops through part of a Beethoven piece on the fly.

It’s so good. And Chris’ face is priceless. He’s almost giddy.

#Colbert picked Jon Batiste for his Late Show band leader and gave him tons praise. Great platform with lots of viewers.
@markwyner no worries! Enjoyed it so much, thanks for sharing. Picked up on the corrections the interviewer made at the end... "...then to see it, hear it, feel it..." The first correction was obvious, the next one was genuine. Great clip!
@markwyner Thank you for sharing the joy!
@markwyner Thank you for this moment of bliss.

@K_REY_C nice. As a musician and polymath, I acutely understand what these artists are doing. I’ve explored it myself. It’s extremely challenging to pull off.

With time and planning it’s hard. On the fly, it takes a very special kind of brain to process all of it in real time.

@markwyner Agreed, they're capable of hitting all of the notes and able to apply nearly any style on top of it as if they exist beyond any particular genre. It's enthralling.
@markwyner it's really fun to do this

@noplasticshower it is. In my bands I often coordinated playing covers in different styles. It’s super fun to reimagine a song that way.

But hopping mid stride on the fly is a completely different story. I appreciate the magnitude of that.

@markwyner it's also really fun to sneak snippets and hooks into other songs. I do that all the time.
@markwyner John Batiste is a legend and a genius and he seems like just the sweetest kindest person. We are so lucky to have him 💞
@haubles absolutely. I’ve seen a few interviews with him. I suspect that his friends, family, and bandmates are grateful to have him around.
@markwyner completely. I saw some clips of his wedding once, and they included some of the remarks from his loved ones. It was so heartwarming! Wish I could remember what I was watching
@markwyner minor point his name is Jon not John. You may get more pick up on the hashtag if you edit it
@Kay sweet mercy. This is what I get for posting in the wee hours. Thank you. 🙌🏻
@markwyner No worries. I agree with you on his musical gifts 😍
@markwyner Haven't seen a reaction like that since Roy Clark played for Oscar and Felix on the Odd Couple

@walshman23 I really hate country music, but I did catch some Hee-Haw growing up. So I know Roy Clark from that. I also recall “The Odd Couple.” But I hadn’t ever seen this clip, so I went and watched it.

Mercy. Roy Clark can fucking play. Now I’m gonna have to track down more of his stuff like that. What he played there was def NOT country.

Thanks for the note.

@markwyner I feel duty-bound as a fellow country music non-appreciator to warn you that this sort of thing can lead to learning about the ridiculous guitar skills of Glenn Campbell.
@markwyner I discovered him recently - too late- and indeed his music is really special
@markwyner He's scheduled to perform at Red Rocks Amphitheater in CO, US on September 24, 2025.
@cfmccarthy if that’s near you and you’re going, I’m happy for you.
@markwyner
Wow. His fingers move so effortlessly through all those improvised notes.
Very impressive.

@lucyruthe that’s one of the things I noticed right away. He’s just letting his fingers move.

When I’ve discussed musicianship with people, I always mention this threshold you cross.

Learning an instrument is almost insufferable at times. But then you cross it. Every seasoned musician knows about it. You can suddenly just think about the music, and your body switches to autopilot. It’s hard to explain, but it’s the moment making music becomes otherworldly.

@markwyner

That actually makes sense.
Kinda reminds me of learning to type on a keyboard and how eventually you're just thinking the words as your fingers move automatically.

@lucyruthe right. Exactly like that. Great analogy.
@markwyner Jon Batiste is absolutely delightful. Just so precious! Thanks for sharing!

If you like this, I'd recommend taking a look at some of the videos in this playlist:

In each one, #MartiFischer takes one famous/iconic song and recreates it in 5 different musical styles/genres. Each video is brilliant.

@markwyner @drahardja a few years ago my wife and I got to see a Late Show recording (Steven Colbert was excellent) and it was just after Jon Batiste had won album of the year at the Grammy’s so instead of just performing Colbert interviewed him as a guest. And it was clear both how immensely talented he is and how deep their friendship is. Really great experience to be there in the audience.

@Rycaut

What a rad experience. Stoked for you and your wife.

I’m glad you mentioned their friendship. I literally just responded to someone, noting that I heard they were great friends.

@drahardja

@markwyner @drahardja if they aren’t friends they are both incredible actors. It was a really cool experience. Even got to go on stage as my wife and I were called up by the opening act (comedian who asked couples questions as part of his act). Not filmed just part of warming up the audience. But it was indeed pretty awesome even in that context to get to walk on the set just for a few minutes.
@markwyner I find it strange he hasn't heard the beastie boys before.
