I’m obsessed with the egg yolk jellies

#jellyfish #marine #monterey

My wife is in town (very rare!) so we took a nice evening stroll from the aquarium to the Sandbar

Bloody-belly comb jelly. Can’t believe I get to see this at work

Black necked stilts at our onsite aviary (which rehabilitates and releases injured birds, and keeps those who can’t be released)
The ‘wave crash’ feature at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
GIANT sea bass

I love this pic I took of the avocet this morning. I went to the aviary this morning before we opened and I had the whole place to myself

Baby birb (snowy plover)
I like to take the scenic route to my office (past the kelp forest)
The back deck when there’s no one there is really cool

I don’t know if you know how big this tank is

You can also se inside here https://www.montereybayaquarium.org/animals/live-cams/kelp-forest-cam

The round blob in the top center is a southern sea otter frolicking by herself

Lunch with a view

Seen around the office.

1. Sunfish costume (!!)
2. Penguin plushie

Same window, a few seconds apart
The world feels weird. I’m just going to work by a window
I love that this penguin waddled over to ‘chat’
I need to not buy all the things at the store
Honk.
I think I am floundering (but actually it’s a mola mola)

I went to hang out with my friend, Ray

A coworker was waving at me from inside the shark tank.
I went to see my friend. He’s the bass.
My evening commute (I waited till closing time and for all guests to leave, then I went to hang out at the open sea exhibit by myself)

I saw this on a coworker’s desk (she works with the birds)

Let me kelp you

I have puffins at my workplace

I didn’t realize I loved sea nettles and jellyfish so much

Do the black sea nettles know they’re beautiful
Debut of Opal, our one year old otter that was named by the Internet
I adore puffins
Reflections in the tank
Moon jellies

I like these little puffin bellies and feet

#Birds

HI IVY (I misidentified this otter, sorry)

#Otter #Otters #Marine

Sent my wife this (the joke is, I am kind of face blind and I can’t find her especially at airports)
Low light photo of a hammerhead shark

The California sheepshead can change gender. It also sleeps in a cocoon made of mucus, for protection.

I feel like I’m going to spend the wrasse of my life being jealous of it. (It is actually a wrasse)

#Fish #Puns

I’m in a conference room. I looked out of a window (because lots of people were). Someone says ‘they get all my seals of approval’

#Seals #Pinnepeds

You can’t tell, but this guy is swimming, burping and yelling and probably farting all at the same time. Impressive work.
I just love hanging out with them. Honestly I’d rather listen to sea lions barking than some politicians. Or internet sea lions

“A tube anemone has a built in escape route. A tube anemone can disappear into its home in the blink of an eye. Its tube can be two feet long and serves as a quick escape route and an anchor in the constantly shifting sand.“

Cool, but can anemone hear me?

With a little kelp from my fronds
No matter how busy I am, I always make it a point to spend a lot of time walking through the main aquarium when I am here
Hi my name is Blenny. And I leap
@skinnylatte I wouldn’t get any work done. Ever.
@skinnylatte I really want to see that aquarium. My wife says I need to see SF if we head to the bay area. I'm not sure how to convince her that I don't care about cities, I want to see fish, obnoxiously wealthy people, and the wine country.
@skinnylatte Best time is January when you will have it to yourself!
@skinnylatte *hands you your Dad Card* Welcome to the club.
@skinnylatte so fresh and so clean

@skinnylatte

What are they going to do with it?

@skinnylatte it looks so happy, I want to be more like that puffin.
@skinnylatte this entire thread is pure joy 😍

@skinnylatte
oh

oh my

gorgeous

thank you

@skinnylatte this photo unopened, on my feed, looked like feet positioned to ‘clap’ 😂
@skinnylatte when do they elect their pope?
@skinnylatte huh, I guess they only wear red fins when choosing a new pope?

@skinnylatte

Sounds like a great name for a band.

@skinnylatte I'm extremely jealous! Thank you for sharing!
@skinnylatte I am really loving all of the aquarium post and all the puns - keep ‘em coming!
@skinnylatte I really wish this could be my lunch time walk.
@skinnylatte Some politicians? *Most* politicians... 🙄
@skinnylatte *digging out swim trunks from the closet*
Challenge accepted!
@skinnylatte How do you know I can't tell? Maybe I can tell!

@skinnylatte

I've seen seals flopped in the sand like this before and every time I think they're dead at first. Nope, just super chillin'.

@skinnylatte You work at a punusual workplace.
@skinnylatte hopefully they helped seal the deal hehe
@skinnylatte Behold! The Great Seals of the State of California!
@skinnylatte Today is the first day of the wrasse of your life, as the self-improvement affirmation used to go.
@skinnylatte fish is also pink, blue, and white because it is canonically trans
@skinnylatte Misidentification? Ottrageous!
@skinnylatte Your workplace never ceases to deliver the delights
@skinnylatte You have puffins? *books flight*
@theplaguedoc we have a few rescues at the aquarium. they’re super cute. It’s also pelagic birding season and I’m going on trips to the Farallon islands nearby. have seen puffins in the water often
@skinnylatte yes, but at some point you're going to have to admit that the canoe has actually sunk. One does not simply observe the underside of a puffin.

Jelliessss

Someone complained that I don’t actually post enough octopus photos despite promising to do so in my bio. So here’s one

Also always a good time to post an octopus video

Brayyyyyy

(Video of them being noisy: https://youtube.com/shorts/mTGrO065ErU)

Always love showing friends around!
I don’t often walk to the area with the smaller fish but they are so pretty
No matter how busy I am I try to walk through the aquarium before I start work / meetings so I can see all these amazing creatures
I like when you make the corner from the amazing jellyfish exhibits and suddenly see the open sea exhibit. Especially fun with friends on their first visit
@skinnylatte I spent a few years (1970s?} around a Jaques Yves Cousteau museum in Long Beach. JYC's Museum of the Sea. Inside the Queen Mary. I was thoroughly taken by the infrastructure. Water weighs tons, so everything is strong. Plumbing, lighting, aeration, wall, glass, circulation, etc. at museum scale were ingenious for all that they had to be resilient and rugged.
@skinnylatte I would walk through the jellyfish and past the otters every day, personally.

@rcadden I usually do only that and wanted to change it up!

@skinnylatte
It is infinitely unfair that you have this as a break opportunity.

@skinnylatte what an amazing creature! And the octopus was interesting too!

No, seriously, thanks for sharing the video - that's fascinating!

@skinnylatte Fun fact: The Beatles movie Help! was originally going to be called Eight Arms To Hold You. 😀🐙🦑
@skinnylatte the way Chica reaches up to Rene reminds me of how Json Manystripe will come up to me at my desk, and put his paws on my thigh to demand scritches. She's a lovely critter.
@skinnylatte Thank you for inspiring others to post the octopus the world needs right now
@skinnylatte #obligatory I don't think we're ready for these jellies. :)
@skinnylatte
I saw one yesterday that was around half a metre wide, in Scotland. So thankful I was in a boat and not in the water.
@jodiem oooh do you know what kind?
@skinnylatte one with the bubbly tentacles, not the long stringy ones
@skinnylatte I never get tired of the jells.

@skinnylatte jellies!

we frequently watch the aquarium's jelly camera. they are extremely relaxing entities.

@skinnylatte oooh I’ve never seen the egg yolk jellies
