Mr. Turnstone

This ruddy turnstone (Arenaria interpres) was strolling on the shore at Holly Beach, Louisiana, which is on the Gulf of Mexico. I have to say, when looking at its right eye, it doesn't look like it is in a good mood. I don't know whether this is a male or female, I don't think these birds are very sexually dimorphic. But Mr. Turnstone it is until I know differently.

Cavorting … on our third day of Florida birding we watched Reddish Egrets dance, leap, and dash about with their wings flared and raised as they foraged … one of the most entertaining bird species I’ve ever had the joy of watching.

Greater and Lesser

I spotted these two birds along the rocky shoreline of a hidden pond in Albany, Georgia. They’re both yellowlegs, but two different species sharing the same stretch of shoreline. The bird in the upper left is a Greater Yellowlegs (Tringa melanoleuca), and the one in the lower right is a Lesser Yellowlegs (Tringa flavipes) — or at least that’s my best read of the scene.
