I look at it as a communication mismatch — when essential or broadly interesting information was hidden in the alt text, which most people won't even see, that's a failure of the post, not a win for accessibility.
Alt text was meant to *support* access, not act as a secret bonus track for extra content or facts :( If something's worth knowing, the post itself is so much better place for that.
