While we don't promote non-#FOSS apps, we can salute #Brave for setting up their own #FDroid repository for #BraveBrowser. @brave how about a fully FOSS browser in f-droid.org next? 😉

How to add? Follow: https://brave.com/blog/f-droid/

Official Brave F-Droid repository now available | Brave

Our new officially-supported repository allows users of the F-Droid client to install the browser and receive automatic updates without requiring Google Play.

Brave

@fdroidorg @brave congrats for the repo.

Fuck off for the homophobic bastard and for the cryptocurrency. Even if it was FOSS, promoting products of those kind of people is not ethical. We want free software but we also want our software to be free from hate speech and scams boiling our planet. 👍

Merci.

@feudjais @fdroidorg @[email protected] Not to mention that their adtech system is designed to track ad views. They claim its "anonymized" through the magic of cryptocurrency.

Um..... this is no better than Firefox getting "anonymized" ad tracking (except Mozilla hasn't yet run a bunch of scams designed to trick people into using their wallet).

@fdroidorg Cryptocurrency scam run by a notorious homophobe, maybe let's not!
@fdroidorg @brave oh its the homophobic shitcoin browser
@aks I know about coin, but what's homophobic about brave ?
@fdroidorg @brave - what parts are non-FOSS in Brave? The crypto-wallet stuff? And/or something else? I've been liking Cromite myself recently as far as Android browsers go, but Brave seems to be the only Android browser that strongly resists fingerprinting.

@TotalSonic @fdroidorg @brave "Brave seems to be the only Android browser that strongly resists fingerprinting."

Let me introduce the Tor Browser. @torproject

@elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject - nope, not according to the EFF's stress test at https://cpveryourtracks.eff.org - Brave continues to be the only Android browser I've tested that passes this third part. Lots of browsers (including Cromite) do better than Tor as far the first parts goes too.

@TotalSonic @fdroidorg @brave @torproject IDK what you did, but for me, Tor Browser for Android shows Yes/Yes/Your browser has a nearly-unique fingerprint.

Most of the fingerprint data stems from the fact that Tor Browser is hiding info or providing placeholders, and from the fact that it's based on Firefox (which is very rare on Android). Still, the point of Tor Browser is to be indistinguishable from other users of Tor Browser, not from everyone else.

@elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject - my results for Tor are gotten via installing current version from F-droid, onto "vanilla" EvoX AOSP 15 (June 2025 security patch) ROM on a Poco X5 Pro. fwiw - here's the results from Brave
@elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject - and here's the TrackerControl report for Brave, showing no embedded tracker libraries.
@elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject - of course on the point regarding the ethics/politics of Brave's CEO, then I agree with many on this thread that it is concerning enough to make me not want to use Brave's products as well.
@elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject - I noted that Tor, unlike every other browser, wouldn't allow me to take a screen shot (I had to choose to print first), which is certainly a great feature to better guarantee privacy (although can cause inconvenience for some users, such as myself, that take screenshots often)
@elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject - the other thing that is disconcerting with Tor on Android, is why are embedded tracker libraries found in it? These don't exist in Cromite, DuckDuckGo or Brave.
@TotalSonic @elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject When I last looked, this is a false positive since Tor Browser blocks javascript by default from those tracker domains, and the detection is based on whether the domain name is present in the app. I believe there is an issue about this on the Tor Project tracker.
@elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject - to be clear Tor for Android does well across lots of the suite of privacy tests listed here though - https://privacytests.org/android
Which browsers are best for privacy?

An open-source privacy audit of popular web browsers.

@TotalSonic @elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject You know those tests are run by a Brave employee, right? They can claim impartiality, but it’s kind of hard to be truly impartial when you work at one of the companies.

Best avoid that site altogether, even when it supports your point.

@t3rminus @elgregor @fdroidorg @brave @torproject - already knew that, the site makes it clear on their about page. Why I think saying to ignore its results is FUD though, is first, the tests run are open sourced at https://github.com/privacytests/privacytests.org so you can run them yourself to audit & verify the results, and second, the results, while showing Brave does very well across most categories, also shows it failing in some of the tests, and shows other options doing equally well (e.g. Chromite, Librewolf).

@t3rminus @TotalSonic

Why avoid it? It's a good work, we need more like that. If you have trust issues, you can simply ignore the Brave column and compare the others.

I've known about this website for a long time, and I still haven't seen anyone prove that the results are wrong, even though they accuse the person behind it of being "pro-Brave."

@fdroidorg yeah, not the company I love to see you advertise for :/
@fdroidorg @brave you do not in fact "gotta hand it to them"

@codl @fdroidorg @brave for context, from Forbes:

"Brendan Eich recently stepped down as CEO of Mozilla, developer of the Firefox Web browser. It may be more accurate to say he was forced out in the wake of a rising boycott against him."

He is currently the CEO of Brave. Don't use the Brave browser.

@fdroidorg @brave how about you don’t promote fascist techbro software, f-droid? Get a fucking grip
@fdroidorg @brave can you please not promote the homophobic scam browser thanks
@fdroidorg Please tell me this account isn't the actual maintainers, a hard fork on F-droid would be a headache for everyone.
Vivaldi Browser | Powerful, Personal and Private web browser

It’s a web browser. But fun. It comes with a bunch of clever features built-in. It’s super flexible and does not track you. Get the Vivaldi browser for desktop, mobile, and your car!

Vivaldi Browser
@fdroidorg @brave @oarnd vivaldi is also not foss (yes I know they release parts of the browser, but that's missing a lot of stuff)

@oarnd Just another proprietary google crap fork whose devs used to claim "It's open source" years ago. And when you prove the company behind it lies, with a screenshot, some random troll fanboy "ambassador" first pretends you're lying then pretends "You're nickpicking lol" then even insult peoples for exposing marketing bullshit…

Fuck corpos and their proprietary, full of google spyware, crap. Fuck their fanboys. Fuck the for-profit, capitalist enshittification web

@fdroidorg @brave

@brave @fdroidorg have you considered not advertising the chick-fil-a browser? it costs you absolutely nothing
@fdroidorg Drop the salute. Y'all fucked up with this move.
@fdroidorg @brave retract this, please. bigots should never be welcomed in open source circles.

@fdroidorg More custom F-Droid repositories are great, but I wouldn't go so far as to saluting Brave considering their track record. You took a stance against Gab in the past, please show some moral dignity now too.

(This page is a good summary of some of the issues with Brave: https://www.spacebar.news/stop-using-brave-browser/)

Stop using Brave Browser

Seriously.

The Spacebar
@ROllerozxa @fdroidorg Thanks for providing the link. I'm no fan of Brendan Eich. Do you have any info on things that #Brave the company has done? Eich also was key in #Mozilla and #Javascript, it would be good to hear related info about those ecosystems as well. Peter Thiel is even worse, that's one reason why @fdroidorg stopped using #PayPal.

@fdroidorg @[email protected] uh oh you've stepped onto the minefield of tech drama good luck getting out uncancelled

oops you've been cancelled

@fdroidorg @[email protected] take back this endorsement of the shitcoin fascist techbro browser as soon as you're able lmao
@fdroidorg You're saluting the cryptobro reactionaries? For what?! Would you say your "heart goes out to them"?
@fdroidorg Come on F-Droid, do better. Don't promote software repos made by horrible, homophobic people.
@fdroidorg @brave
Is anybody, who really cares about #Privacy, want to install Chromium based browser on their phone instead of #Gecko based #FOSS browser like #Firefox and it's forks?

@Tejas @fdroidorg @brave Why stab yourself twice though when you only have to stab yourself once? I think this is still a positive development, even if only half the equation is properly private.

#babywiththebathwater

@Tejas
Yes! I have brave. 🙋‍♂️
@fdroidorg @brave

Please don't use homophobic crypto fasc chrome Frankie. Use Cromite.org instead if you want a privacy hardened chromium mobile browser with ad blocking, and use Ironfox (Mull fork) if you want a privacy hardened firefox fork.

The CEO of Brave is a piece of absolute garbage and you should dump their shit immediately

Mozilla CEO under pressure to resign over homophobic beliefs

Employees and volunteers at Mozilla - the organisation which promotes open source software such as its Firefox browser - have called for new chief executive Brendan Eich to stand down because of his donations to political campaigns to ban gay marriage.

@Tejas @brave Keep in mind that the system Webview (the one that all apps that are not Firefox use to show views and web content) can only be Chromium based, so even if you root your device and replace it (or your custom Android distro does it) it's a matter of picking the poison.
@fdroidorg @Tejas @brave which modern apps are using webview? Custom tabs? Yes. Webview? Nope.

@Tejas People who pretend all it takes to have a "privacy respecting browser" is for-profit companies pretending to "respect users privacy"…
