Hey 3D printing people!

Did you know there is a Fediverse alternative to Printables, Makerworld and Thingiverse?

It's called Manyfold, you can find out more on its website:

➡️ https://manyfold.app

You can follow the official account at:

➡️ @manyfold

There's an official demo at https://try.manyfold.app and a public server to join at https://3dprint.social

@hoco possibly of interest....
@jamesmarshall I’ll check it out. Thanks!
@FediTips @manyfold Do... do they not have non-Docker build instructions??

@FediTips @manyfold Oh okay, there's non-Docker build instructions... in the source repo, which was a little tricky to find ("Source" link in the header was tiny).

It'd be really nice to have build-from-source instructions alongside the Docker instructions. Not everyone uses Docker.

@IceWolf @FediTips @manyfold In case there are no instructions, you could look for the dockerfile which contains all the instructions on how to set it up. These instructions should also work to install it natively . At least worth a try in nothing else is available.
@IceWolf it’s on the list; running a Rails app natively with Ruby etc isn’t often something people want to do. But, we know we need to at some point.

@manyfold Oh good! Good.

We're doing that with Masto ourselves over here, so! =^.^=

@FediTips @manyfold

Never seen their only file format offering "ply" and not heard of any of the slicers the file can be opened with.

Have they heard of Prusa Slicer?
Of the 4 slicers they offer files for, only Cura is mentioned in this list:
https://www.3dsourced.com/3d-software/best-3d-slicer-printer-software/

Have they heard of STL files that can be opened in most 3D design programs?
How about 3mf files that can be loaded into just about any slicer?

Another site, yes, but definitely not an alternative site for most 3Dprinting folk

10 Best 3D Slicer Software in 2024 (6 Are Free!) - 3DSourced

Over the past 2-3 years, I've tested pretty much every slicer out there and have discovered that they're not all created equal. In this guide, I'll compare

3DSourced

@MaryPot hi there! We support everything we can, including STL, 3MF and many more: https://manyfold.app/manual/supported_formats.html

And the four slicers that have direct “open in” links (along with a normal “download” link) are the only ones that have URL handlers that will accept any domain; PrusaSlicer only accepts loading files straight from Printables, and Bambu do the same with Makerworld.

We’d be v interested to know how you thought we only support PLY, that’s not the impression we’d want to give! 😅

@MaryPot btw, we’re definitely not trying to correct you there, we’re genuinely interested in the first impression people get and how we can improve it! ❤️

@manyfold

You do only offer PLY. Every file I clicked on, the only "option" (not an option when there is only one) was PLY in the examples you made available.

I may pop back and have a look in a year or two, when the site is more accessible and helpful to those of us making do with free design software and a good models site (Printables).

@MaryPot ah, I see what you mean. That’s the format some of the demo models are in, yes, but there are others too. Benchy is in STL, for instance: https://try.manyfold.app/models/61nfwxgb

Thanks for the feedback, we’ll improve that! The demo site is a bit of a mess at the moment…

Try Manyfold

@LillyHerself @FediTips @manyfold nice - I've got lots of designs on the other platforms, I should seed a small presence on Manyfold and try it out.
