Sam Altman Wants Your Eyeball

Last week, OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman announced in San Francisco that the World project he co-founded, formerly known as Worldcoin, is opening six stores across the United States, allowing users of the project's app to scan their eyeballs.

@Em0nM4stodon i find it hard to imagine anyone thinking 'yes, sign me up'! but then i remember people voted for orban, trump, johnson et al and then i am sad.
@jamez_2_point_0 @Em0nM4stodon The same people obsessed with avoiding the "mark of the beast" seem bent on trying every possible version of it.
@chontorres Please scan my DNA and put it in a tech bro's database I don't control! @jamez_2_point_0 @Em0nM4stodon

@jamez_2_point_0 @Em0nM4stodon this has been around a few years already. The initial draw was some cryptocurrency in exchange for your eye scan.

Here's an article from 2 years ago, and it mentions "the Orb" having been around a couple of years then. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-66128111

Worldcoin: Sam Altman launches eyeball scanning crypto coin

Thousands of people scan their irises via an orb on launch day of "dystopian" crypto project.

@bretthaines @jamez_2_point_0 Indeed, I talk about this in details in the article I wrote linked above :)
@Em0nM4stodon @jamez_2_point_0 yeah, I should have read a little farther before I commented πŸ˜…

@Em0nM4stodon

All you had to say was, "Sam Altman" and I immediately thought, "he can fuck right off."

@Em0nM4stodon Sam Altman can eat my shit

@Em0nM4stodon

Just one?

What about the other balls?

@Em0nM4stodon

Kenya suspended the company's operations in 2023 over concerns for privacy, security, and financial service practices.

@Em0nM4stodon Bold of Altman to assume I have any eyeballs.
@Em0nM4stodon
But I'll get $6 in store credit 🫠
@Em0nM4stodon nah it's fine.

btw if you got the data leak notice email yesterday, change your retinas asap.
@Em0nM4stodon If you have other balls, scan those instead
@Em0nM4stodon But wait, the Association of Data Protection Officers of the Philippines is endorsing this. WHY? Your guess is as good as mine. LOL
@rom @Em0nM4stodon fucking whAT
World Network to launch verification device in PHL to help combat rising threats, deepfakes - BusinessWorld Online

WORLD NETWORK, formerly Worldcoin, said it plans to introduce its secure and anonymous device WorldID in the Philippines to help combat the rising number of cyberthreats and deepfakes. β€œOver the next few months, we will start introducing this, but the full launch is definitely happening this year,” Damien Kieran, chief legal and privacy officer of […]

@Em0nM4stodon
I am pretty sure I
saw this movie and already know where the plotline goes.
@Em0nM4stodon So far the only positive thing I've seen in this is that you can, theoretically, build a device that just fakes biometric data to get lots of accounts and therefore lots of data. However I fear there are precautions against that, making the whole scheme rather pointless.
@Em0nM4stodon What if I use someone else's eyeball? I have a couple of spares lying around.
Loafer (@leean00@discuss.systems)

#dontforgetto Scan your eye and balls into the Sam Altman App. And definitely not, the two eye balls in your head. #HashtagGames

@Em0nM4stodon so... they are using biometric data to create a hash that then gets copied elsewhere (a phone) to prove you are you later? Did I get that right? I must be missing something because that is ludicrous. It's just not how to use any of this.
@petherfile Indeed, and check the linked article I wrote for more details. It's even worse than that.

@Em0nM4stodon so I did get that bit right? but... noooooo. [Start obvious rant] That's worse than a password (because it's essentially becoming a secret you can't change). This is backwards un-security. No wonder they have to pay people to get them signed up.

Yeah, avoid this turkey vomit nonsense sounds very good advice.

@Em0nM4stodon reminds me of a short story by @SwiftOnSecurity from the dead bird site about a guy stealing food from an Amazon store and trying to escape the surveillance state.
@Em0nM4stodon Anything to do with Altman is a "no go" for me.

@Em0nM4stodon When posting photos of yourself online, never post such high definition that you give away biometric data away, that includes your iris closeup, closeup of your fingers (fingerprint). I'd also discourage posting of your face online, but oh well, that cat has ran out of the bag long ago.

People don't realize hand photos are so high quality now you can lift ones fingerprints from it.

@rejzor @Em0nM4stodon

the iris i can see(πŸ˜„) how that works but whoa, fingerprints! that's wild.

@qaris @rejzor Same for posting high definition photos of keys by the way!

@Em0nM4stodon @rejzor

keys.. cause of like making a mold cast or something else?

@qaris @rejzor Yep! Quite easy to make a working replica from an online photo. Too many people post photos of their keys online when they get a new house and such.

@Em0nM4stodon @rejzor

oh yeah, i now get what you mean.
oof, definitely something to add to the list.

thanks for the heads up. πŸ™‚

@qaris @Em0nM4stodon I'm almost certain you can 3D print a key that's durable enough to unlock a door using plastic material. Hell, with resin you can even hit accuracy easily.

@rejzor @Em0nM4stodon

yeah, that's what i was thinking about as well, 3D printing makes more sense today..

the resin however, i'll have to look into that..

thanks. πŸ™‚

@qaris @Em0nM4stodon Resin is known to be able to make much higher detail models, which might be important for something like a key.

@rejzor @Em0nM4stodon

yeah, i think i now see how that makes more sense as a better option to printing, if available..

@rejzor @Em0nM4stodon I don't worry about that through the power of
having an old phone with a shitty camera!
@rejzor @Em0nM4stodon
Eye did NOT know that about the fingerprints, RejZoR.

@rejzor @Em0nM4stodon

The last time I posted my face online was in the '90s. Except for one case where I was required to, so I ran it through an impressionist filter first.
