The perfect metaphor for the fediverse doesn't exis...

(From faculty slack)

@ricci @ai6yr

I once attended a planetary science conference hosted by the Miraikan science museum in Tokyo.

It is across from a large restaurant district and a giant statue of a Gundam.

The park in between was being used to host a heavy metal concert by Megadeath on the last day of the conference.

It was an interesting week.

And also might work as a description of what I encounter on Mastodon.

@michael_w_busch @ireneista @ricci @ai6yr Except for the pedants who point out that it’s Megadeth, not Megadeath πŸ˜‰

@ArtHarg @ireneista @ricci @ai6yr

My mistake.

But I did not stay for the show.

@ricci showing up to the next conference in costume
@koronkebitch tbf the main way that this metaphor fails is that it assumes that the scientists and cosplayers are different people
@ricci that's funny, I was at a tax law convention last week and as we were moving in on Sunday an anime convention was rolling out. I joked that I had much more to talk about with the anime people in the tax people :-)
@ricci I would imagine some crossover of interests as well.

@ricci
Saw a post once where someone was talking about the feral cat they'd rescued and they'd named it like Clyde or something and then they took it to the vet to be checked over and vaccinated and fixed and posted a followup that Clyde was actually Cleo, and I said, Congratulations, your cat is trans, you have reached peak mastodon.
@ricci On the other hand during one of our early Interop shows - in Washington DC circa 1992 or 3 - a snow storm prevented us from moving out - but a garden show started to move in. They began by dumping truckloads of steaming, stinking manure on the convention center floor.

@ricci

One of the roboticists should have gotten someone in a robot costume up on stage with them and pretended this was a robot they had built.

@ricci
@sweetmonkeyjesus

Only if there were a Euro led Tankie Neo Nazi Jihad Supporting AntiZionist AntiSemitic Con, going on along with all the robot and anime "whimsy" then sure, it'd be just like the Fediverse

@ricci Had this with a psychedelic rave and some hip hop thing.
Funniest shit all those hip hop people were really surprised to see so many people on Acid and Shrooms and other drugs haha

@ricci My fav conference accidental Mashup was when an Anniversary Star Trek Conference was happening at London Excel center at the same time as:

An International meeting of Senior Hassidic Jews
And
The European Meetup for ZUMBA Instructor - Trainers
And
The National Firefighters Training Seminar

My favourite memory is seeing a Fully Uniformed Firefighter, holding a neon clad Zumba instructor over his head while she was Planking, while a Klingon & Hassidic elder looked on in admiration

@Faintdreams This sounds like the best time ever
@Faintdreams @ricci These con-binations are amazing
@DeltaWye @Faintdreams @ricci Can I just say that's the best newly coined term I've seen in ages?

@ricci Honestly the killer feature of every social media app is an aggregator. And then we start talking about the way they will intentionnally restrict means of expression (def not speech /s) while binding them to proprietary databases.

So I can't agree more with you -- social media were never meant for serious discussion. They were meant for shitpost. There's one tool for deep diving into the way the President has denied democracy for the fifth time in six months, and another for making a fucking carnival out of it.

Introduce ActivityPub. It aggregates the Article and Note Object Types. That's where scientists and cosplayers meet.

@ricci I've been on the opposite end of this. I used to volunteer for an anime convention. One year the venue was hosting a wedding, an exercise convention, and us at the same time. It's kind of amazing to have such opposites in the same building. The folks at the wedding (save of the mother of the bride) were very happy with us, even though some of the staffers we used as crowd control were in cosplay.
@two_d I'd be OK with it if this had happened at my wedding

@ricci

All cool and all, but needs all the cats from the cat show next door to escape...

@ricci it is indeed what Mastodon is like. It is also rather like the museum I work in when we get the most random groups ever - over the years we have had a steampunk crew, Polynesian nuns, 30 guide dogs, Tongan rugby team and a group of Marylin Monroe impersonators and more...you do wonder sometimes...
@ricci i was at that conference and can confirm.
@Susan_calvin Which side? ... or both?
@ricci the robot side, sadly
We probably had as much fun, but different fun.
@ricci @genehack plus the number of times it's the same people.
@ricci @skinnylatte Reminds me of years ago when a coworker in the anime fandom was surprised at all the guys in grass skirts adjacent to an event. I let him know Jimmy Buffet was in town for a concert.
@ricci probably a lotta overlap between the two confs
@ricci
Funny coincidence that I know the guy on the left in that photo well. But I did NOT know that he had grown such an epic beard!
@drb sometimes, people just do these things, no rhyme or reason
@ricci this is my go-to description of mastodon shenanigans.

@ricci when we go to fan conventions we hang out in the science tracks :)

And we check out some amazing costumery

@ricci This photo reminds me of the old #Twitter, where everyone met in one place. And not spread across 1000 servers like on #Mastodon.
@ricci Billy's an intelligent construct though. I think it's non comme il faut to call someone a robot where he's from.
@drgroftehauge oh no I'll find out who used that reaction emoji and ... well ... not actually do anything to them
@ricci was this in atlanta? I remember seeing people with icra lanyards and cosplayers around downtown
