Folks, a while ago I discovered a clever form of #knitting called illusion or shadow knitting.

It’s where a pattern is formed by stitches that only appear when viewed at a certain angle. It sounds complicated, but it’s just a combination of basic knit and purl stitches.

Anyway, I thought I’d do a quick test and I made this maple leaf and I must admit, I love how it turned out!

I think I might have a go at making a larger piece that can be viewed from the side, so I can hang it somewhere in the house.

@Sobtanian This is so cool and so well done

Introduction to illlusion knitting

@Sobtanian This is so cool! It's like a permanent form of the "velvet drawing" or "sequin drawing" that I used to enjoy as a kid with a couch pillow :D

@canadaduane I know what you mean and I agree!

Maybe my next one should be a big penis haha.

@Sobtanian redrum
@grumpasaurus Good idea. Might make that my next one.
@Sobtanian Not sure if anyone has suggested it, but it would be interesting to also incorporate perspective skew so that it “looks correct” when viewed at the revealing angle.
@voided Not sure what you mean, I think it looks correct as is 😅
@Sobtanian like how forced perspective art works

@voided Yes I was wondering if this what you meant.

I’m not sure it would work, the knitting illusion works by having bumps that aren’t visible until you look from an angle, creating a silhouette of the art (in this case a leaf), so those bumps might mess with the perspective warp.

However: any picture can be turned into an illusion knitting pattern so maybe I’ll try finding a simple forced perspective piece and knitting it, to test our theory.

@Sobtanian I did think that the resolution of the knitting pattern may be a limiting factor. Though could work for simple shapes.
@Sobtanian This is so cool and so well done
@Sobtanian This is very cool! My wife gave me a scarf a few years ago with Tux, the Linux mascot, using the same technique.

@eivindmork Perfect!

Opposite for me, I knit for my wife haha. Was thinking of making her a jumper with hidden art in it using this method.

Have you played Alan Wake 2 at all?

@Sobtanian I really like this technique. It's crazy subtle in the first photo.
@gooba42 Yes, once you know what the illusion is you can kinda see it but very faintly.
@Sobtanian that is cool as hell

@Anarchy_How What’s cool as hell is that you teach religious studies yet say cool as hell!

Thanks, I really like how simple it is yet effective.

@Sobtanian illusion knitting is so fun! I did a colourwork blanket using it a few years ago!
@Sobtanian @FrazzledBrynn I’m imagining a quilt made from squares that use this effect. Looks great on the bed. Confuses the heck out of people otherwise.
@Sobtanian Yes! I also only saw this recently. SO clever. Your maple leaf is fantastic!

@GinevraCat thanks! The pattern is free (I’ve linked to it in a comment to the original post) and I just followed it.

I then went on to create my own pattern entirely from scratch. It was quite a challenge but the results were worth it.

Attached: 3 images I wanted to have a go at making my own illusion #knitting pattern completely from scratch, to make something I could hang on the wall. So, I decided to try and convert Jarre’s Concerts in China cover to an illusion knitting chart. It wasn’t easy, in fact it was harder than knitting the damn thing 😅 But I managed it in the end and I think the results are quite good, especially for a first attempt 😊 My wife is gonna frame it for me soon then it’ll go on the Jarre wall. Yes, I have a Jarre wall. BITE ME.
