If you’re in the EU and you opted out of Meta training generative AI on your Facebook, Threads and Instagram posts and pictures, Meta are requiring you to opt out *again* or they will continue training on your data.

Users have until May 27 2025 to opt out again or forever lose the right. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2025/05/meta-is-making-users-who-opted-out-of-ai-training-opt-out-again-watchdog-says/

This is the random ass opt out URL, which isn’t advertised in their apps: https://www.facebook.com/help/contact/6359191084165019

Meta is making users who opted out of AI training opt out again, watchdog says

EU users have less than two weeks to opt out of Meta’s AI training.

Ars Technica

I still strongly believe that the long term impact of generative AI will not be the fifth Industrial Revolution or AI cyber mega war.. but just mass copyright and intellectual property theft to breed fake temporary wealth.

Today’s politicians will be board advisors in 2 years for failed AI companies with $420 share prices.

@GossiTheDog or this classic of the genre.
@smilingdemon @GossiTheDog SBF fashion style is crossed between "PE kit from the lost property box" and "guy arrested in dawn raid by police"
@foobarry @smilingdemon @GossiTheDog „Clueless guy hiking an Arizona canyon at 40C°“
@GossiTheDog we're f'd as a species aren't we?

@GossiTheDog

That's already happening and the AI bubble will burst eventually then it will fade into the background.

Along with Blockchain and NFT's.

Folks will be ripped of in the mean time and the rich will get richer.

@GossiTheDog

I honestly don’t think it will even get that far.

AI content will very quickly be relegated to Facebook and Spam folders.

It will, unfortunately, be more bleak than that. These systems are not good enough to replace human thought, but they are good enough to destroy it by training a generation (and a large section of two or three previous) to not think.
@GossiTheDog
@osma @GossiTheDog which was the point all along.

@GossiTheDog @bfdi Wie häufig darf eine Firma einen eigentlich dazu nötigen einen Opt-Out wieder und wieder für genau das gleiche zu erklären?

In einer Beziehung würde man das schon als Redflag sehen...

@GossiTheDog May they forever step on LEGO bricks.
@mahryekuh @GossiTheDog +1 and please not on the small ones, but the Duplo bricks' backside.
@PottRadler @mahryekuh @GossiTheDog No, the little Lego bricks are much more painful!
@GossiTheDog and if you are not in the EU, not even lube.

@mrcopilot If you are an EU citizen but not currently in an EU country how does that work?

The legality of all of this sounds dodgy AF.

@GossiTheDog I love these things .. "We may still process information about you to develop and improve AI at Meta, even if you object or don’t use our Products."
@GossiTheDog Opt-out URL doesn't work, not sure why
@igimenezblb @GossiTheDog It worked for me a few minutes ago and now suddenly it does not work anymore.
@sylvia_ritter
"Word got out! Take it down! Take the MFer down! NOW!" (submarine diving sounds)
@igimenezblb @GossiTheDog

@GossiTheDog

Another opt-out? Haven't you already opted out?

"We've had one opt-out yes. But its time for second opt-out."

"Merry, I don't think they've heard about second opt-out."

"But.. but, what about ElevensGDPR?"

@tezoatlipoca

"Opt-Out 3D" coming this fall to screens near you

@GossiTheDog

@GossiTheDog And they will keep making you do it until you make the choice they want.
@GossiTheDog Thank you so much for boosting this. I had already opted out a few weeks ago.

@GossiTheDog I've completely abandoned all of their services.

Ironically, I embrace ChatGPT fully. I will do so until they demonstrate adequate malevolence. Yet there seems to be some evidence of this already insofar as how they cleaned their training data sets.

@GossiTheDog

My previous opt-out was permanent - I deleted my accounts.

@GossiTheDog
You can also opt out forever by leaving Meta…
@GossiTheDog At this point we should just leave their cursed platforms and never come back.
@GossiTheDog that's not how you opt out! you have to copy and paste a bunch of pseudo-legal gibberish to opt out. remember to tell everyone else to do it too

@GossiTheDog

this should be adjudicated.

@GossiTheDog Thanks. I did that, and got a message: "We will honour your objection

"This means that your request will be applied from now on for developing and improving AI at Meta. We'll send you an email with details."

Still looks like doublespeak to me! Happily the email they sent is clearer.

@carusb Whatever they say I'm not sure I believe them!
@GossiTheDog And there’s another link for Instagram: https://help.instagram.com/contact/233964459562201 (and possibly one for each of their products, not sure)
Instagram Help Center

@GossiTheDog Better option: get the fuck out of Facebook, Threads and Instagram.
@GossiTheDog also, if you are currently outside the EU, using a VPN to your EU country does not work.

@GossiTheDog so uh, why do we believe that 'opting out' will make any difference what-so-ever?

All these shiny buttons we can press, saying 'privacy' on them. And we're banging away like monkeys, not grasping that the folks who built the machine with the buttons on it see us as... their monkeys.

@andymouse @GossiTheDog I think it makes a difference in the legal sense regardless of Meta honoring it, which in turn will get NGOs like @noybeu to sue

@frej

Ah, yes.. What a display of trust in law and order. Almost makes me feel peaceful myself - as if I can forget that it was the law and its emissaries who carried out the Holocaust and every other really heinous thing that ever happened to mankind.

@GossiTheDog @noybeu

@GossiTheDog Habe meine Konten bei #Facebook und #Instagram schon gelöscht. Das wäre ein weiteres Argument gewesen.
@GossiTheDog It's even better: when you try to submit the form, you get a technical error. Spells "dark patterns" all over it...
@GossiTheDog the form doesn't work ... when you submit it, just loops back

@GossiTheDog

I opted out of Meta forever a few years back. I can't say I miss it.

At first, it was difficult being cut off from my friends. But I've since made new friends, and I'm okay.

@GossiTheDog and the form submit endpoint 500's
@GossiTheDog @briankrebs “We could not process your request”. Convenient 🤨

@GossiTheDog clearly, there's never been a better time to just delete meta property accounts. I did it a month ago, and while I had no choice but to set some long distance friendships on fire at the same time, I wasn't going to be held to ransom by the fascist plasticine android any more.

I do keep finding myself going to open FB/IG which is really kind of jarring to have unavoidably discovered how much of a reflex it had become to any indecision about what to do for the next 60s.
