white smoke just came out of our router... this means that the DHCP conclave has ended and a new IP address has been selected
@Ninji …or pop(p)ed up, one might say.

@Ninji either that or the piston rings are cracked and that's oil smoke.

And, if you're running your router so hard it is smoking, might want to back off the Internet for a while LOL.

@Av8rdan @Ninji @TundraWolf piston rings? For white smoke I'd more expect someone's blown their head gasket... ;)
@chloeraccoon @Av8rdan @Ninji @TundraWolf Head... blown... white... I know there is a joke here.
@Ninji πŸ˜‚ That would be a fun mod. Pretty easy too, if the router has USB. Refilling it with whatever smoke liquid you choose might become a pain, though.

@Ninji

and black smoke just means the router burnt the toast (damn multi-function machines)

@Ninji

Electronics are different - when the magic smoke is released the device is dead and even the god above (working though the new pontiff) can not make it work again...I know this from many mis-wired home automation gizmos.

@Ninji But has their NAME been updated too?

#reverseDNSplease

@Ninji

If smoke is coming out of your router, I don't think DHCP is your biggest problem. 😳

@argv_minus_one @Ninji Damn Hot, Caused Pyrotechnics? Seems relevant :)
@Ninji My Innocent XIII (formerly monsignore 80.61, cardinal of 6.90) had been elected in 2017, and I hope he lives for a long time. Having to memorize new popes is such a chore, with misrouted prayers and whatnot. I'm scared the next one could be one of those 169.254ers...or worse yet, an IPv666.
@Ninji
No No No, now it won't work! Everyone knows these things won't work if you let the smoke escape!
@venite
@Ninji the vatican seems to use this old d-link box on AS8978 for the same purpose
@Ninji there is only black smoke coming out of mine. guess i'll just wait a bit longer.
@Ninji surprise surprise. the new IP address continues to misgender me
@Ninji I need to get a tiny smoke machine and make a router do this every time a device connects
@Luna @Ninji comically small smoke machine
@Ninji I'm so glad I removed all DHCP from my network. SLAAC for the win.
@Ninji Nope. If the smoke has escaped the router is dead.
@Ninji IT here... yeah, checks out.
@Ninji finally another ipv4 address, thanks i was running out
@Ninji That is hilarious, did it require three years and opening the roof by tearing it down to make that happen?
@Ninji That, or it's on fire. Lolol!
@Ninji @jaybird110127 It also could mean that your router is running IPFire
@Ninji ... or something like that. It also means you should pray for the health of the new router ...
