What on earth, SoundCloud??

SoundCloud

Now I'm spending my morning talking to an "AI-powered chatbot", trying to get in touch with a human to opt out of having my work be used to train AI.

Happy Friday, we live in the future!

@stefan Oh, please, tell me if you succeed...
I have 4+1 accounts, with a lot of music.
Will have to find a different platform if not possible to opt-out.
@cybeardjm @stefan same! I don't want my music used to train AI
@stefan well this is some bullshit. Fa Real.
@brothersoul Yeah, I haven't been a huge fan of SoundCloud, I mainly use it as a dumping ground of my ideas and demos, and then pick my favorites and put them on Mirlo, Bandwagon, and Bancamp.
@stefan I just deleted my account there, since I don't use SoundCloud that much anyway, but made sure in the comment section that I was deleting because of them implementing AI, not that this is going to stop them from doing so
@woollypigs just deleted my account too. perhaps if we can get enough people to delete their accounts, they might think twice about using our music in AI training without compensation or consent.
@stefan let us know if you get anywhere with this.. I have far too much stuff on SoundCloud, it would be a real pain to have to delete it all

Not a very satisfying response.

"SoundCloud has never used any artist content to train AI models, nor do we develop AI tools or allow third parties to scrape or use SoundCloud-hosted content for AI training purposes. [...]

At this time, there is no opt-out mechanism available."

#soundcloud

I still have to ask them about this "no AI" tag, not sure if this is something I should be able to apply myself, or is perhaps being added automatically?

cc @cybeardjm @keefmarshall

I think they are referring to their https://soundcloud.com/robots.txt file, which does indeed exclude some popular AI bots.

@cybeardjm @keefmarshall

And another update from SoundCloud support:

"With our upcoming Terms of Use update, SoundCloud will not use your content to train generative AI models unless you’ve explicitly given consent via an opt-in mechanism.

That means by default, your content will not be used for AI training, so no action is required on your part to protect your content."

And they linked to a letter from their CEO.

https://press.soundcloud.com/249951-new-campaign-may-14-2025

"SoundCloud has never used artist content to train AI models. Not for music creation. Not for large language models. Not for anything that tries to mimic or replace your work."

A Letter from our CEO: Clarifying our Terms of Use

An update to our terms of use.

SoundCloud newsroom

The revised terms of service now say:

"We will not use Your Content to train generative AI models that aim to replicate or synthesize your voice, music, or likeness without your explicit consent, which must be affirmatively provided through an opt-in mechanism."

Much better!

@stefan Wow yeah. Thats a much better outcome than I was expecting.
@SomeGadgetGuy Definitely, I really wish they started with that.
@stefan
The pushback and account deletions must have given him a bit of a shock to have the t&cs redone so fast
@stefan @sarahdal time to close my shitty account nobody cares about anyway
@stefan @sarahdal Jokes on them though, my music suuuuuuuuuucks 😅

@junderwood Ah, well, clearly it's good enough for our new machine overlords!

@sarahdal

@sarahdal @stefan time to delete everything from SoundCloud ugh have I said yet that I hate the future
@stefan If I click the link I get the Terms in German. The quoted line is followed with a Klarstellung/clarification. Maybe I'm reading that wrong, but it sound like you can edit the permissions. (I'm no artist so I can't test.)
But I agree that it's muddied legal text.
@tb That seems more about limiting access to your music to other users, I don't see anything about opting out of AI training.
@stefan @sarahdal time to delete everything there.
@stefan @sarahdal actually i have a better idea
overlay all the tracks ontop of each other so it's just a horrible mess
@stefan @sarahdal It’s time to pull the rip cord on anything and everything you do not control.
@stefan @sarahdal I felt like this was on the horizon based on my genius engineer partner’s advice. So I didn’t move forward with going to SoundCloud.
@stefan SoundCloud AI is gonna be all about fake bootlegged DJ sets
@stefan @sarahdal Already prepared my https://bandwagon.fm/ account.
Bandwagon.fm

Bandwagon.fm

@stefan @sarahdal

The taste of sick comes into my mouth, as I remember a dear friend who put all his self penned and quite wonderful songs and music into Soundcloud before he died. No chance now of his opting out

@stefan @sarahdal
"Sounds" like it's time to start filling #SoundCloud with faulty information so the AI gets trained on crap and becomes useless.

@stefan @sarahdal

Drop SoundCloud Today, delete all info.

@stefan @sarahdal Yep, likely to train AI DJ tools, and then likely just AI DJs in general.

This is precisely why I don't publish mixes on SoundCloud.

@roadriverrail @stefan @sarahdal Unfortunately, with today's quantising, other than a few, I feel that a lot of DJing has long since become computer derived.. gimme some vinyl and 1210s any day!

This aside, I certainly don't agree with any of this AI training stuff on people's creatives.

@ianh @stefan @sarahdal Please understand that I first tried to teach myself on vinyl over 20 years ago, and failed, and have a lot of respect for those who could train their ears in that world. But I draw a sharp distinction between "computer derived" and an AI DJ. It's the difference between the "centaur" and "reverse centaur" in Cory Doctorow's terms. What separates a vinyl DJ from a digital one is a matter of degree; an AI DJ is different from both by a quantum leap.
@stefan @sarahdal Thanks. I've just removed my one and only track.

@stefan @sarahdal

Now SoundCloud... tomorrow, bandcamp, etc.

@stefan @sarahdal OK, I deleted my SoundCloud tracks.
@stefan @sarahdal time to run your music through an AI training sabotage filter?
@stefan @sarahdal allright, there goes my soundcloud account.
@stefan @sarahdal what places do people go from here? I use Bandcamp, but it doesn't have the same features

@synthfi @sarahdal I'm still thinking about the next step for myself, while I wait to hear back from SoundCloud's support about opting out, but if I have to leave, I'll likely look into hosting a Faircamp website.

Faircamp

Faircamp

@stefan it may be a good time to start actively supporting developers of Funkwhale
https://www.funkwhale.audio/

It's like Mastodon, but for music

@sarahdal

Funkwhale

Funkwhale - A platform for all your audio

@stefan

Dude. Now I have to remove my music from their platform. That makes me angry.

@sarahdal

@markwyner @stefan @sarahdal

just don't do it all at once as per @mavica_again , there seems to be some fckery afoot at the cloud of sound :

Computer Fairies
@stefan @sarahdal boo. It's difficult to not loathe every tech company rn.
@stefan @sarahdal
Seems this change of terms was more than a year ago, so all is likely scraped & digested already.

SoundCloud Quietly Updated Their Terms to Let AI Feast on Artists’ Music

SoundCloud, a music-sharing platform loved by new and independent artists, updated its terms to allow it to use artists' work for AI training.

Futurism

@bertkoor Yeah, saw someone post about that, bummer.

@sarahdal

@stefan @sarahdal ... Odd.

The word 'absence' isn't in that link?

@DarkestKale It's in the second paragraph of the "Grant of license" section.
