From Ang Bayan: NPA Paralyzes Destructive Quarry Operation In Himamaylan City

The New People’s Army (NPA)-South Central Negros (Romeo Nanta Command) sanctioned the destructive quarry operation in Sitio Medel, Barangay Carabalan, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental Province on July 4. The Red army paralyzed and burned two dump trucks and one backhoe.

The quarry equipment belongs to Barangay Carabalan captain Mildred Titular’s business. The total damage to the three quarry machines amounts to an estimated ₱11 million.

NPA-South Central Negros spokesperson Ka Dioneso Magbuelas said residents have long complained about the quarry operation because of its impact on the Paniplan River. He explained that the yearly excavation in the area deepened the river depriving the surrounding farmlands of irrigation.

The quarry operation is severely detrimental to the residents’ lives and livelihood. Crossing the excavation-deepened river has also become dangerous for residents.

Recall that the quarry company forced local residents to sign a “Free, Prior and Informed Consent” or FPIC in 2021 to allow its operations. At that time, the 94th IB was used to intimidate residents, distribute bribe money, and employ other divisive tactics to railroad the quarry operation.

“The NPA-South Central Negros’ punitive action serves as a reminder to companies and individuals against violating the human rights and livelihoods of the people in the name of profit,” Ka Dionesio said. He also warned that the people’s army will not hesitate to defend the people and the environment against quarries, mines, and destructive projects.

“The prevailing Red power in the mountains always stands for justice for the victims of abuse and deception,” Ka Dionesio stated.

Meanwhile, 94th IB troopers have reportedly arrived in Barangay Carabalan following the punitive action of the people’s army. The mercenary army clearly defends the interests of the destructive quarry, landlords, comprador bourgeoisie, and bureaucrat capitalists.

Today in Labor History July 8, 1898: May Picqueray was born. She was a French anarchist, trade unionist and pacifist, who published the pacifist, anti-militarist periodical Le Réfractaire from 1974 to 1983. In 1921, in response to the silence of the French press on the convictions of Sacco and Vanzetti, she sent a parcel bomb containing a defensive grenade and leaflets to the American embassy. Her efforts helped mobilize French journalists, without harming any people and only causing damage to material. In 1922, as a delegate of the Metalworkers union, she visited Moscow, where she climbed on a table full of Red Trade Union officials to denounce their having a luxurious banquet while the common people starved. She refused to shake hands with Trotsky because of his responsibility for crushing the Kronstadt rebellion, and his betrayal of Nestor Makhno. During the Spanish Civil War, she helped transport orphans out of the country. During World War II, she helped people escape French concentration camps. She also was a participant in the French uprising of May 1968, participated in anti-nuclear campaigns and supported war resisters.

"As is common at similar rallies, Saturday’s No Kings demonstration in Salt Lake had protest marshals scattered generously throughout the crowd, there to maintain order, cooperate with police and make sure any unsanctioned protest activity is quelled. Organizers and volunteers in high visibility vests patrolled the event as demonstrators rallied, and walked alongside the march as it progressed through the city.

A growing presence at demonstrations in recent years, many protesters hold disdain for protest marshals, pejoratively called “peace police.” To many, the use of marshals hampers spontaneous and autonomous tactics, and puts those who are willing to take more risky actions during protests in danger. In some instances, these “peace police” have gone so far as to isolate and turn in to police protesters who take on more confrontational roles, leading to arrests and police violence.

At Salt Lake City’s No Kings protest, at least two of these “peacekeeping team” members, as they’ve been identified in police statements, were armed with handguns.

According to the affidavit justifying Gamboa’s arrest, these two “peacekeepers” saw Arturo step away from the crowd and determined he was acting suspiciously. They, according to the police report, saw Arturo remove an AR-15 style rifle from his backpack and begin manipulating the weapon.

The “peacekeepers” told police they drew their own guns before telling Arturo to drop his rifle. At that point, according to their statements to police, Arturo “lifted the rifle, and… began running toward the large crowd gathered on State Street holding the rifle in a firing position.”

That’s when one “peacekeeper” fired three rounds at Arturo, hitting him once. His other two shots missed, and one struck a nearby protester. Arthur “Afa” Ah Loo, a 39-year-old father and renowned fashion designer, was critically wounded by the errant bullet and later died in the hospital."
