"There was no autism diagnosed before 1930."

Pluto wasn't discovered until 1930, but I'm pretty sure it was there the whole fucking time.

@grrlscientist They really need to make the diagnostic criteria and classification more clear though. I understand what they were trying to do with the spectrum method but it is too broad and, let's face it, idiots like RFK Jr lack the mental ability to comprehend something that complex and nuanced.

@_Dreugan_ @grrlscientist
I'm wondering if there is anything - even the clearest description - that could convince the ppl you mentioned to believe it exists before.

Facts don't matter if your true believe is different and so don't match for those.

@ScharfeZunge @grrlscientist Nothing can be done about belief based on faith rather than science and fact.

It is also indicative of how few people know about the scientific method and how a hypothesis becomes a theory/fact. They just understand confirmation bias because it is easy and requires no effort.

Just the end of the plan for conservatives and their decades long dismantling of education and teaching critical thinking.

@_Dreugan_ @grrlscientist Objective systems and protocols always have room for improvement, but make no mistake, the real problem here is RFK Jr. He's completely unqualified and an idiot.

Let's put him in a rubber boat at sea and let the Naval Aviators get in some target practice!

@tzudad @grrlscientist Should have let the worm eat his whole brain
@grrlscientist have you heard what they did to Pluto? Thatโ€™s messed up

@oceanhaiyang @grrlscientist

Pluto was rightfully canceled...pluto knows what it did....

@oceanhaiyang @grrlscientist well, on short notice some people will go there and misuse the planet, they will drill, drill, drill. #maga
@grrlscientist
I'm pretty sure autism is represented in fiction and art all along.
Convinced Sherlock Holmes is on the spectrum.
We just didn't have a name for it until the 1930s. And we still didn't really understand more than the really extreme presentation. Which is still chronically misdiagnosed.
@lucyruthe @grrlscientist the term "eccentrics" used to do some very heavy lifting back in the day.
@grrlscientist
Want to make me feel old. I'm now much older than Pluto's discovery was when I was born.

@grrlscientist Not suggesting they do but if they changed the classification criteria, like they did for planets in '06, autism numbers, like planet numbers, would drop
@grrlscientist took me a minute to realize you werent saying pluto was discovered *because* of the autistic person, like someone got hyperfixated on the idea that there was another planet and found pluto
@grrlscientist but pluto was not named pluto
@grrlscientist
Pluto's not a real planet, so it doesn't matter. /sarcasm /snark /satire
@grrlscientist The problem with all the f*ckwits running Trumpistan is down to the old Swift (Jonathan not Taylor!):
โ€œYou cannot reason a person out of a position he did not reason himself into in the first place.โ€
And they are operating from a mash up of a bunch of stolen, and plain made up, faith ideas.
@grrlscientist I've heard they usually stoned people like that, so maybe that's why there weren't as many recorded
@grrlscientist A planet existing is a different fact from a psychological diagnosis that is based on social science, more so about autism that its diagnosis has to do with social behavior of the individual compared to the group.

@grrlscientist

Next in MAGA La La Land -> Pluto is flat

@grrlscientist conclusion: pluto causes autism
@grrlscientist Wait, the appearance of Pluto is what caused the autism epidemic?? That's a solvable problem!
@grrlscientist alt text please! :)

@GroupNebula563 @grrlscientist Image of Pluto against black space with an unattributed quote, "There was no autism diagnosed before 1930." Further text at the bottom reads, 'Pluto wasn't discovered until 1930, but I'm pretty sure it was there the whole fucking time.'

@grrlscientist

En in 1726 bestond kanker niet.

@grrlscientist the best one i saw on bsky was "my brother in Christ they lobotomized your aunt"

@grrlscientist And the distinction between "functional" Autism under the moniker Asperger's started with the Nazis experimenting on children in the camps.

They know this stuff and they're doing it for the same reasons. They're going to kill and sterilize a lot of poor women and children again.

@grrlscientist wait, does that mean Pluto causes Autism? ๐Ÿ˜‰
@ted @grrlscientist Obviously it's the knowledge of Pluto that causes autism. Vaccines are cleared now, who was anti-vax now needs to keep pluto a secret instead.
@grrlscientist no...
I was part of the team that put it there as a goof....
@grrlscientist Iโ€™m skeptical about this.. I think perhaps aliens placed Pluto there to intentionally CAUSE autism. Itโ€™s too convenient to say itโ€™s been here the whole time

@grrlscientist And everyone who ate a pickle in 1800 died. Therefore, let's ban pickles because they cause death.

This is logical fallacy that gradeschool students can debunk.

@grrlscientist So has anyone found the source quote? Searching "There was no autism diagnosed before 1930" the only hits I'm getting are to variants of this discussion, which kind of spoils the joke if it's a made-up quote.
@grrlscientist There was no diabetes diagnosed before doctors reached consensus on a definition and a name for it either.

@grrlscientist Incidentally, according to Wikipedia, the term was used in 1911 for the at-the-time broader schizophrenia diagnosis (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_autism). And autistic people existed before then: Newton and Cavendish (https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC539373/), Michelangelo (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15079170/), etc.

@grrlscientist And sure, it entered in 1930. But according to Merriam-Webster's Time Traveler, all of the following words entered after that, and he'd be hard-pressed to argue they didn't exist before: Yupik, Linear B, Nuristani, Tutsi, Yinglish, suicidal ideation, Mid-ocean Ridge, kippah, monkeypox, Ediacaran, origami, abled, sexual orientation, DNA, premenstrual syndrome (medicine is famed for paying attention to women), and eukaryote.

@grrlscientist More: permafrost, RNA (before DNA?), giant anteater, West Nile Virus, Little Ice Age, poliovirus, neo-Nazi (in 1938), dirt-poor, googolplex, falafel, Ugaritic, food web, ultra-processed, and Dogon. In 1930 itself, we get Khoisan, third-degree burn, Tswana, and twin primes. But sure, none of them existed before. Source: https://www.merriam-webster.com/time-traveler.

@grrlscientist have you heard about that exoplanet epidemic. We need to make a study to determine its cause and stop it from happening!
@grrlscientist "Autism" was coined by Bleuler in 1911, with full diagnoses soon after.
@grrlscientist and keep in mind, before 1930, it was originally a negatively-biased schizophrenia diagnosis.

@grrlscientist

Yes but... is autism a planet? Inquiring minds want to know. ๐Ÿ˜‰
