@futurebird Wow, was it really so long ago?

@futurebird *extremely Play It to the Bone" voice*

"Knockout..."

@futurebird I WANT TO EAT ALL OF THAT HUGE CAKE MYSELF AND GET DIABETES

@futurebird

So many layers of irony!

Back in the 80s-90s, Republicans insisted that the sensible solution to homelessness and hunger was cutting taxes. Churches and wealthy people could help the poor more efficiently, since people would be richer, and recognize true need at the local level. That was capitalism.

Now somehow, that's not capitalism, its stupid and we're supposed to think it represents socialism. But they can't explain why.

MAGA is trying to have their cake and eat it too. 😂

@todymotmot @futurebird Also, it didn’t work anyway, because the additional money was mostly hoarded rather than used to help those in need.
@gregly @todymotmot @futurebird it's pure magical thinking... because in theory they want to be the hoarders on top, they do everything they can to make sure the hoarders on top get everything because that opens up the *theoretical* possibility that they could someday be in that position

@todymotmot @futurebird Sometimes when people say things, they lie; sometimes they are unselfaware and sometimes it is their core truth. They didn't say it was capitalism, they implied it was the innate goodness of people in private institutions.

But, as I recall, they eliminated many of the deductions for charitable contributions. At the time they said if one wants less of something, tax it. By bringing income applied to charity back into taxable, well, we understood the math of insincerity.

@pomCountyIrregs

Great point. I didn't realize they reduced deductions for charitable contributions at the time. 🤦🏻‍♀️ Just ugh.

@futurebird

@todymotmot @futurebird thank you for this, i remember it and could never understand "people would be richer, and recognize true need at the local level", since the rich become richer by ignoring "true need". Really it was just an extra effective tax burden on those who feel need and worry, because maybe they have or had little, not those who have plenty means leading worryless lives.
@futurebird
Any standard cake is cut into 12 pieces. Thus when at a brithday party everyone gets 1 piece i.e. 8.3%
Thus with friends Bernie gves away 91.7% anyway.
@vampirdaddy @futurebird Sometimes you let the birthday kid have two slices though so it averages out.
@vampirdaddy @futurebird didn't realise it was standardised so cut my daughter's in 16 pieces for her+14 guests
@ehproque @vampirdaddy @futurebird that's a code violation, you'll get a fine
@vampirdaddy @futurebird that’s probably true for 12” round cakes but I don’t think that’s the standard birthday cake anymore. The vast majority I see are sheet cakes. Those are cut into 64 portions.
@futurebird This. anyone else feel this way?
@futurebird loving this post #wholesome and reminds that sharing is care
@futurebird would be funnier if its a community note
@futurebird wow, some people are really assholes :)

@futurebird

I've never been one to steal the birthday cake of someone I barely know and whom I've never been invited to a party with.

Wait. A. Minute.

Bernie's birthday is in September...!

@futurebird Why does Mayor have to hurt me like that? 8-(
@futurebird really having only 9 people show up is a relatively tame party by some standards
@futurebird Please notice after 90% of the cake is redistributed Bernie still gets to eat a nice piece of cake. I wonder if there is anything to learn here?
On avait dit 3 parts Obélix! (Three pieces, I said!)

a group of cartoon characters ...
