After multiple instances of longer detainment of tourists by ICE, both the UK, Germany, and Denmark now warn against traveling to the US. While Germany and the UK has general warnings for all tourists, Denmark specifically warns about being trans and traveling to the US.

It is likely we will see a significant drop in US tourism this year.

Welcome to the Trump economy.

@randahl
A normal year I have 1-2 work trips to the US (field is international research infrastructure), but now it'll be zero until regime change.

I'm not alone in taking this position, so all the conferences are looking hard at finding other locations. Currently USA has a worse attendance reputation than China, and that's a place we know some of the community won't go to.

@maswan @randahl
Very understandable. 👍🏼

@randahl I tried looking at Undenrigsministeriets website for the advisory for transpeople, but couldn't find it there. I tried looking here, but maybe you can point me to it?

@Anders @randahl Maps made by Erin Reed are most current and have explanatory notes.

The US splits sovereignty between states and the federal government, much like Germany. Laws vary by state, but there's also strong federal influence.

Before this year, I would have said it depends what state you're in. But the current administration is trying to change that, and I would advise most people to avoid the entire US for now.

@randahl (typo in "both")

Yes this is horrible, and next it will be people who walk funny...

@randahl to be fair, also in Germany tourists and other travellers from abroad quite often end up being detained in an ICE. Fortunately, this detainment only takes a few extra hours at least in the normal instances of "disruptions of operational process". Apologies. It's Friday.

@randahl can you update this to say "transgender" instead of "transgendered"?

Transgendered is not how we're called. (You might want to remove that from your phone keyboard completion as well.) Appreciate the updates though!

@domo @randahl Please, do correct it to trans (preferred by the trans community) or transgender. "Transgendered" is the language people who hate trans folk use, and a big red flag.
@domo @randahl Sorry I didn’t catch this before reposting. Undid the repost and will repost again after Randahl’s had a chance to fix it.
Good! Finally the US can focus on US tourists which bring in proper money (the best!), USD, and not shitty Euros. If you think about it, tourism is really just short-term migration, which is icky!

There's a way to fix the trade deficit: just block foreign currency from coming in!

—an idiot

@randahl afaik Germany only has a general travel notice, not a warning and a warning for trans folks.

This is a relevant difference in case someone wants to cancel their trip now.

@mxk @randahl You're correct, OP is misinformed. Here's a source that clarifies the changes to Germany's travel advice:

https://www.dw.com/en/germany-updates-us-travel-advice-after-citizens-detained/a-71980369

"The ministry changed its advisory on Tuesday. It now includes a reminder that approval through the US ESTA system or holding a US visa does not automatically allow entry in every case.

He added that the change did not amount to a travel warning."

Germany updates US travel advice after citizens detained

The Foreign Office stressed that the new advisory does not constitute a travel warning. It comes after US immigration authorities detained multiple German nationals upon arrival.

Deutsche Welle

@randahl It would seem that a noticeable drop has already happened, at least in Norway: https://www.nrk.no/rogaland/reisebyra-opplever-25-prosent-fall-i-salget-av-reiser-til-usa-1.17324728

According to NRK, travel agencies have noted a 25 % reduction in travel sales to the USA. This drop does not coincide with reduced travel to other locations.

@randahl Anyone organising conferences etc needs to cross the USA off the list of potential venues. And people should start assuming that many non-US athletes won't compete in the 2028 Olympics in LA. But then again, who knows what the situation will be by 2028? 😬
@randahl History repeats 🤷‍♂️🥺

@randahl

Let us be very frank here about the risks of non-US people visiting the States.

If you are LGBT, non-white, from a Muslim nation please rethink the visit ......for now.

And do protect your electronic devices or do not bring them with you(buy burner phones once in US). The devices will be examined with special software networking tools.

(I am a US citizen)

@randahl Believe me, us trans folk are WELL aware of this. We’ve being saying it for YEARS, so this is less “the Danish government providing a warning to trans people” and more “everyone ignored trans people, things got gradually worse, and now cisgender folks are starting to notice too”
@randahl Also, the word is “transgender” (or just “trans”), not “transgendered”. In the same way as we don’t describe people as “femaled”, “maled”, or “talled”.

@rvedotrc you are right. Unfortunately I have made this mistake a couple of times, because the incorrect form “transgendered” reminds me the most of the correct Danish term “transkønnede”.

I mean no offense — it is just an unfortunate linguistic coupling in my brain.

I have updated the post to use the term “trans”.

@randahl Ja ja, jeg tænkte, da jeg skrev det, at det var nok en slags dansk-til-engelsk oversættelsesfejl. :-) Tak for at du tog godt imod det, jeg sagde!
@randahl Universities here in the US have started advising foreign studens that if they leave the US to visit home, they might have a hard time getting back in.Especially if they are from one of the countries on the various suspect lists. Crossing the border in either direction is dangerous now.
@randahl No military HW exports. No tourism money. Ok, I AM tired of winning.

@randahl

I am a natural-born United States citizen. Both of my parents were also natural-born United States citizens. My father served over 30 years in the Navy. Part of his service involved being stationed abroad in the late '50s. Which means I'm scared to travel outside the US today. I don't know how some dumb official will deal with it when they look at my United States passport upon my return, and see that it says, "Place of birth: Japan."

@Professor_Stevens having a legitimate reason to be scared of your own border authorities is certainly a strong example of how nuts the US is under the Trump regime.

@randahl

I will claim I was already aware it intellectually. But when you realize you're not free of the threat at a personal level, it makes you aware of it far more viscerally. I don't want anyone to suffer unnecessarily, but I wouldn't mind if some of the MAGAts began to realize the freedoms now at risk are actually their own.

@randahl

Tourism is one part of it. Look at what Trump's mouth is costing the defense industry in terms of sales to our now-uncertain allies.

@randahl one would hope. But I fear there’s more idiots than trans people on this planet atm.
@randahl hi, because of this I need to close my mastodon account. I can’t figure out how to do this. Please, help!

@randahl

It would do humanity a huge favor if this entire tread was published (without names/profiles) to an easily read document.

It's one of the most damning opinion threads I have seen for how badly the US is being perceived. But I suspect things will get much worse before we can get back to being good neighbors again.

@randahl Please don't go all meta-analysis on us Randahl! Please focus on the major issue and the biggest victims. The persons, humans, affected by this ICE and Trump-Republican interpretation that if you are <suspected of being an illegal immigrant> you have no rights. Whether your're one, or legal, or a turist or a US citizen, you have no fair rights. To hell with the turism, whatever its relevance.
@franciscos I absolutely agree, that the treatment of migrants is a much more serious problem. But it is still important to talk about US tourism, both because illegitimate detention hurts innocent people, and because it is an excellent example of how Trump has promised a great economy, and will likely deliver a recession instead.

@randahl I agree with your post and assessment however it follows a reasoning I see in the mainstream media, which often discusses very relevant subjects but then reduces them to some parallel or niche topic. I feel that, ultimatly, that diminishes the subject and feeds into the narrative that everything is relative, anything can be spinned.

# People's right to a fair life should not be subject to interpretation, be they migrant, trans, turists or whatever skinned.

@franciscos that is true, but it does not have to be bad intentions. For instance when I make a video, I often have to cut down on the details several times to reach a script which has a length people want to watch.
@randahl I did not meant to imply that you or your post had bad intentions, I apologize! Your posts have called my attention to things and perspectives I appreciate and value. Thank you for that! I also have a soft spot for the guy that keeps asking “who orders to kill and destroy and, why?”
@randahl Do you have some links at all? I would love to read more on what each government now advises. I looked at the UK GOV site but could not immediately see anything new.

@randahl I am looking at this page for example and I do not see it warning against traveling to the US but maybe there is some other page?

https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/usa/entry-requirements

Entry requirements - USA travel advice

FCDO travel advice for USA. Includes safety and security, insurance, entry requirements and legal differences.

GOV.UK

@randahl The wording is a little harsher than other countries but that is all I notice.

A comparison for the "Entry requirements" sections for travelling to the USA and Norway, for example.

@randahl Ok, yeah it changes the wording slightly as I saw when comparing to other countries. But that is a little short of warning against traveling to the US.
@ruari when authorities change the text to reflect that you can be detained because the US regime is nuts, I consider that a warning.
@randahl I see where you are coming from and recently turned down a work trip to the US. I would also discourage people from going there right now. Nonetheless, this is not quite telling you not to go.

@randahl

Indeed, a boycott over Trump policies could see a 50% drop in tourism, fear of being sent to a concentration camp more likely a 90% drop.

@randahl

Welp, there go those jobs that MAGA think are being stolen by immigrants. Just think, they could have worked as maids, at check-in desks, and as gardeners and all the other jobs associated with tourism all this time, and now those jobs will be gone.

@randahl

Musk/Trump and the Republican's 'tariffs' on the USA tourist industry?

@randahl This is so scary to watch. I hope the MAGAs start to get a glimpse of the truth before it's too late...
@randahl
I don’t know about Germany’s and Denmark’s warnings, but the UK’s is pretty weak, as travel warnings go. I’m waiting for something like: “Travel to the USA is discouraged at this time due to upheavals in the government that have resulted in the detention, abuse, and deportation of foreign visitors. If travel to the USA is required, travelers are advised to consult Special Bulletin FM-2025-027 for additional guidance. Note that all electronic devices such as phones and laptops are subject to examination by US authorities. Criticism of the US President is not tolerated.”
#darkUSA
Goodbye, #freedomofspeech
@randahl isolate the US. It'll hurt economies to lose the biggest market, but it has to be done.
@randahl I happen to know about a large travel website that has seen a noticeable drop in travel to the US.
@randahl on 11/1 25 I promised to accept an invitation to speak at a conference in San Diego January 26. I’m formulating the decline email in my head already. “Please move the conference to Mexico so it will be safer for international participants to join”. Canada is also a good option but I expect Mexico will be much easier for the conference logistics. They won’t move next year but they might in 2027.
Denmark and Finland urge caution for US-bound transgender people

Travel advice updated amid reports of ordeals at US border after Trump said country would only recognise two genders

The Guardian
@randahl @coderbyheart You can also add Norway to the list. There is an official warning in place for travel to the US.
